I was searching through Flippa and came across an interesting website. The site claims to get only 20 unique vistors a month and has a monthly revenue of only $5 and a page rank of 3.

Reading the sales page, it seems to be marketing itself as having the potential to do a lot better than it currently is. Stating that they do no marketing at all and doing so would see huge sales.

It also markets itself as only selling through kindle (making 2 sales per month!) and that it did better on clickbank in the past (so in theory the prospective buyer could return to clickbank).

And yet despite this, it sold for a winning bid of over $2400 usd!

This seems ridiculous to me personally, considering that most could sell 2 books on amazon a month without the need of a website.

Is this a regular occurrence on flippa? people purchasing based solely on potential?

Because if so, it may be better to find a good domain name and build a nice site, then sell people on the idea that they could make it work, rather than have modest income, making them feel like that is the most the site could make.

    Hi,

I scan Flippa on a regular basis and see often those deals "Too good to be True" with massive claims that things could be better etc. I think you need to ask yourself always the question why did the seller not do it in the first place and most of the time you come up with a reason that illustrates that it wasn't worthwhile for the seller to take it to the next level - whatever the next level is.

Online an awful lot is sold and bought just on the premises that the potential is great, this doesn't mean that the buyer can meet that potential.

I would rather go for something that has a proven track record.

I'm not saying I want to buy a site like this. I meant that it would be incredibly easy to make a site with similar (or better) income in a relatively short time. My question was if it would be wise to make and sell sites like this one, not to buy them.

I myself wouldn't pay $20 for a site that makes single figures a month.

People who are just plain nuts buy on potential. There's so much crap on Flippa that says $$$XXXXXX potential. Nothing to back it up whatsoever. Just another claim to get people to buy who believe anything they read on the Internet.

Well this site in particular had over 30 bids!

Maybe the users bid because the seller was being honest on hits and income but focused on the possible potential. So many get into IM with lofty dreams, seems like this person was playing on those dreams

most of the time, These type of domains are grabbed by big guns, For them, 2k is like 20$.
But, they only see the potential of the domain name and the possibility to improve it.

The seller probably got lucky or he caught a dud. I see that in Flippa all the time. You see a site that is worthless selling for big sum of money. The buyers of this sites should visit confuseddotcom lol
