Does anyone know a good Speech to text software?

Hey guys,
I've been looking for a speech to text software aince I'm more comfortable speaking rather than typing(my keyboard is horrible).

I have heard of one Dragon Naturally Speaking. What is your opinion about it?

Is there a better alternative?

I don't want one with recurring monthly fees though.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have version 9.5 & I find it tremendous.

    Version 10 is out now

I've tried the speech recognition on MS Office and IBM Via Voice and they don't come close to Dragon

When you buy get the preferred version because then you can use a (recommended) digital recorder to dictate to while you're away from your computer and then use the recording with Dragon to turn it into text

Although they say there's no need to train it, it performs better the more you train it.

PS This was "typed" using Dragon Naturally Speaking

      Michael,

How long did it take you to "type" this?

I find Dragon Naturally speaking version 9 very good. I got it from Amazon.

Version 10 has come out now, so you can find some good deals on version 9 on eBay and Amazon.

Dragon 10 is great. I have a serious southern accent and could never get any of these programs trained until dragon 10. Its worth the money.

I find I can produce a lot more content using software than I can just typing.

There was a thread here recently that someone suggested the voice recognition software with Vista was better than DNS. Of course it comes from MS so it has a built in pain in the neck. It will only type on a MS product like notepad or word.

All the same I will be trying it soon and maybe just using a lot of copy and paste, which would also save me time if a reply I'm trying to make to a post disappears. Has happened!

    best wishes, lloyd

I would recommend dragon 10 , however you must train it as with all speech recognition products.

In addition to being sure you 'train' the software at the beginning I have found you should never buy the most basic version. I almost always buy the preferred version of Dragon Speaking.
Also be sure to place the mic at the same location each time you use it. Changing the length of space from your mouth to the mic changes it's ability to 'hear' you.

I thought about getting software like this a few months back, but I can't help thinking I'd have trouble with it. I can just see it taking longer for me to "speak" an article than to just type it.

But this thread has piqued my interest again.

I'm actually quite surprised at the Warrior Forum. I asked the same question at some other forum, and all I got were affiliate links to all kinds of software that I hadn't even heard of!

    Thanks to everyone who helped.

speech to text software is used so you don't have to type everything on your keyboard. This is useful to people like me who have a very uncomfortable keyboard and so get tired after typing for even 25-30 minutes straight.

    Hi Gaurav:

Hope all is well. Before you purchase any speech to text software or even get it as a gift you want to research please if improvements have been made from the past.

When the products first came on the market even those that had perfect diction and command of their native language were often seeing 82-88 percent results per page.

What that means is there were 12 to 18 percent of errors.

It is also important to understand that if somebody has a regional accent the best software in the universe can not assume the person means something else. For example in the United States in New England the word park will often be articulated as pack. The software is going to think the word pack was wanting to be used. A New Yorker may say Bowston and not Boston, this too will through off the software.

I am not attempting to discourage you, it is a tremendous tool but I hope the results are what you seek.

    Have a fantastic Sunday.

Dragon 10...this is the way to go. As Craig mentioned, the regional dialect may not be a perfect fit for the software, but in my experience (I have written several thousands of articles and ebooks for MANY people) DNS (Dragon Naturally Speaking) is tops...

Here's a link to a thread I started about this i couple of months ago.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...y-booster.html

I use the speech recognition built into Vista and it's great.

Someone here mentioned that it cannot be used for non MS products - not in my experience. I can use it in any software that's installed on my PC.

    Cheers,

    Neil
