Is my domain name too long?

One of my sites is in the data niche and I wanted to secure a good brand .com. However as the niche is pretty saturated, the best I could come up with was usabledatabases.com (hand reg). I have since secured all the plural versions of .net and .org, and the singular version .com as well. But now I suddenly feel this may be too long? Or is it?

I have seen longer .com sites that are pretty popular but still the shorter the more preferable. I once heard there's a 14-character rule of thumb for .com naming - it's always better to have a .com name no more than 14 characters, according to a psychological research or something. However, mine is 15 characters. As the site is still working its way up and I intend to work hard to make it great, I better switch the domain now if I need to.

Do you think this name would stand good or do I need a shorter one? I'm not a native English speaker so I'd appreciate some ideas from native English speakers. Do you think it's too long to be memorable at first glance?

Any idea would be appreciated!

It is only a long tailed keyword of three words. That is not too long. Two or three words are always acceptable.

I don't think that usabledatabases.com is too long for a domain name. I think that it is just perfect. You are actually really lucky to find that name since you say that this niche is saturated.

There is no need to switch to anything else. It is as good as it is.

    Hope this helps.

i think long domain names does not matters , the point which matters is how you build your site and the content and purpose behind it

BTW is a good domain to use for selling databases, you can start a classified site too with this

I am pretty sure that the only time when a long domain name is less effective is when you put it on your car as a sticker. People sometimes have a hard time remembering long tail domain names.

usabledatabases.com is pretty easy to remember too.

If you had something like Talsitisafactofusabledatabases.com.....that is way to hard to remember.

        The above reads:

Tal's it is a fact of usable data bases.com

        This is just an example.

Keep in mind the landscape is changing, personally I'm beginning to think a sub-domain can have just as much SEO clout with Google as a separate domain. Google is looking for relevance and a large amount of quality information. THEY DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR SITE IS CALLED or how long the name is. Just feed the Google BOT

Back when people were more into EMD's (exact match domains) I saw crazy stuff like 35 character domains. At that point it almost lost it's flavor it terms of what the site was about. With that said your 15 character domain is more than fine. That actually fits well within my Goldilocks zone of domain character length

Usabledatabases sounds like nice domain name. Not too long and proper dictionary words.

Sounds alright to me. It's only two words really. Database is one word.

Domain name must be short to remember then it is more effective and people can type it easily and your site may have more visits .

I don't think this is very relevant: very few people type domain-names into browsers manually - most traffic either clicks on a link or "re-visits" after it's already in the browser memory.

I don't think your domain-name's too long, at all.

People worry about the length of a domain name FAR too much. Most domains I sell are quite a bit longer than yours. The important thing is that it is relevant, and makes sense. For example, NaturalGasAirConditioner.com would be considered too long by most people, but because it is very specific, it's an excellent domain for a business selling natural gas powered air conditioners. I could sell a domain like this quickly. As a matter of fact, I'm going to register it right now, as I see it's available, and gets good search volume :-)

First thing I notice is that it's meaningful. It leaves no question what the site holds for the user.

You already have the plurals etc. I would stack on a few common misspellings. Otherwise I think you have a good one.

    Wishing all the best

Don't count the letters, just count the words = 2. So you have a very good dictionary domain name. Now stop buying domains and build your website.

If it works for you, stick with it! I personally prefer to use brandable domains because I think people can keep them in mind for a longer time. What I mean for example would be tigerdatabases.com or databases24.com or even computercorner.com you get it? It depends on your site authority and content if you rank or not. EMDs are no longer the magic bullet!

We have much longer domains than that and they still do well in the search engines for the reaping of natural clicks, which is why they were there in the first place. They are fit for purpose.

I wouldn't have a long name for a business site or other important site, for other reasons.

I don't think it's too long and the site looks professional and easy to use. If you can afford it buying another, shorter, more memorable domain would be good (say, easydata.com, databas.es [I like that one]). For your niche though a catchy and memorable site name isn't necessary, but it's recommended. Good luck!
