What Format images are best for an ebook in MS word, Pdf & Kindle ?

Hi Guy's,

I am currently creating an ebook (my first) and I have just had some illustration cartoons created for it and was wondering what format I should use to insert the images into MS Word and PDF, also maybe Kindle afterwards. Well I am creating it in MS Word first anyway.

The illustrator has sent me them in jpeg format and they are quite large, so I will need to resize them all in photoshop before adding them to the ebook and I was thinking I could save them in a different format/s at the same time for future, try and kill 2 birds with 1 stone, as they say

Hope someone can help .... :-)

I have only used jpeg so far in any pdf that I have created and it has worked out for me so far. Sometimes, when the file is too big then I use a free program called PIX Resizer to make my images smaller.

If you are using the latest MSWord version, you can create a .DOCX file. In DOCX format, there is an option that allows you to "Compress Images". Use that to compress your image to either printing or reading quality.

I managed to reduce a full graphics document of 25MB to just mere 1.2MB by using this function.

thester - I would do as you are, take a little extra time up front to create the images in multiple sizes/formats so they are ready to go when you need them. You should go to Amazon and check out the specs for using images in the interior of your ebook. I believe they say to "future proof" images save in 300dpi. So you could save one set as high-res at 300dpi and then save another set of your illustrations at 72dpi, for a more web-friendly set, so you can use them in promoting your book online. All should be made in RGB color format. I hope this helped!

Use JPEG format. Like Joseph mentions above, compress the images in Word and you'll save a lot of space.
