Thirdworldfoodblog.com - 1 year to grow traffic an monetize.

Hi Warriors,

First post here. Really enjoying the forums.

My sister, Dot, is going on a year long mission trip with a charity called "The World Race" that travels to 11 different countries. She's kind of a free spirit and has yet to figure out what she is going to do when she gets back.

I saw this as a great opportunity for her to start a blog and focus on nothing but growing traffic for a year. I mean, what else is she going to do... I was trying to think of the best niche to set her up in that could possibly be monetized when she comes back. The safest thing I could think of was food. Not exactly the most specific niche I know, but there are some options with it it at least.

So I set her up with a blog (the first time I ever used wordpress) and told here to blog about all the stuff she eats during the year. Apparently, it's some pretty interesting stuff.

Welcome to the Third World Food Blog! - Third World Food Blog

I said take as many pics and videos as possible and write down as many recipes as you can.

So that's where I'm at. We have a year to develop it. I'm looking for some ideas. Mine include:

1. Third World Diet Book
2. Build a list of people interested in food and travel.

After 1 year, she can hand off the blog posting to the next "World Racer", presumably paying the new person with a donation to their charity fund. So there is potentially unlimited "free-ish" perpetual blog posting.

Can any of you marketing geniuses help me with a plan?

Ben

Third world meaning many of the places she is traveling to are underdeveloped or very poor. Hence the mission trip.

Oh yeah, I didn't think about amazon products. Do you think the "backpackers bible" could focus on the food or do you think it needs to be expanded to all aspects of backpacking across the world?

I think you can tell from the first response you received that the term "third world" is potentially offensive to some - especially people living in the countries mentioned on your sister's website! I quite understand that she doesn't mean to offend anyone, but perhaps now would be a good time to rename the blog - maybe something like "diverse diets for diverse cultures - one woman's journey through the foods of the world". That's cumbersome and I'm rubbish at copywriting - but you get the idea.

I like the idea of photos and recipes and your idea of a world recipe book.

This hadn't really occurred to me. And of course there is no intention to demean or offend anyone. The whole point is that many of the foods that she will be encountering are a bit odd from the point of view of a 22 year old American college girl.

The focus is on the food, which is why it doesn't say third world country. I see your point, but I'm struggling to think of something memorable to replace this idea.

No offence, but I think there is nothing offensive in the word "third world".. It's just how it is and it's basically an official term. Third World - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I would rather start off with Adsense and generate some traffic at first. Once you have a decent traffic you can start developing some products.

    Good luck

It's also incredibly outdated and inaccurate to keep using this term. Many countries who were considered third world after WW2, when the term came about, are now not even close to that and are developed or developing.

It's a term best left in the past. It's often used by people from Western countries to feel superior when bad-mouthing things they don't like about less developed countries, as if they personally had anything to do with where they happened to be born and how developed it happened to be.

And yes, many of these countries that continue to inaccurately be called "third world" find the term offensive.

Really think you should come up with a different name. It's just started so there's still time. I don't like it, at all.

Third world is synonym of poor, undeveloped, the end of the civilized world... the place to send the trash in containers and leave it on their docks, the place to test new drugs that are potentially very dangerous (I can say all that, I was born in one)... hum... I wonder why anyone would take offense...

To the OP: from the marketing perspective, it IS a very bad name. You need to call in the freshness of nature, or the charm of tradition - even when GMO crops are destroying everything in "developing countries" as well.

I did a search for you,

      Cultural-Foods.com
      BodySoulFoods.com
      Life-Foods.com

      apparently are not taken yet.

I think it is probably best if I change the name. The last thing I want to do is put my sister in a bad light.

Sometimes I see the world through rose colored glasses and it gets me in trouble.

I appreciate you taking the time to look up some names for me. I'd like to find something with a little more imagery if possible to convey the following.

        1. Countries that are traditionally involved in missionary work.
        2. A traditional US girl with a non adventurous appetite, who is pushing her limits.
        3. Perhaps with a backpacker spin like others have suggested.

Would it still be a problem to reference developing countries?

        developingappetite.com
        developingpalate.com
        developingfoodblog.com

(foodblog was originally in the url because it was the most searched keyword)

        or what about something like

        cultureclashfoodblog.com
        cultureclashfood.com
        cultureshockfoodblog.com

        culturalappetite.com
        foreignfoodblog.com

Anyway, those are just some thoughts.

Are there any more ideas about how to develop the site over a year? More votes for the backpacking idea?

        thanks

        Ben
