Holy Cr*P! My daughter, the entrepreneur. (She's 11.)

by ShayB

My daughter asked for one of those mini laptop computers for her birthday.

She has a blog that she has played around with, but she has really impressed me with her skills!

She wrote a short fiction piece that she will be offering for sale through her site (via e-junkie) and she is working on the videos to promote her literary creation.

I am so proud of her.

I am posting this in the main forum for one reason - to show that if an 11 year old can come up with a product and marketing materials - SO CAN YOU!!!!

Go for it!

ETA - She has done all of this since getting her computer 6 days ago!

LOL, well, the kid is the one doing the work.

I am so tickled with her! She has been hiding in her room for the whole Spring Break (okay, an exaggeration, but still) and then she comes out with this creation!!!

I was speechless! I love it!!!

Here is the thing that makes me excited: She "gets" it.
      1. She created a product
      2. She has a way to sell it (via her blog)
      3. She knows she needs to market it - and has figured out how to make videos doing just that.
How many adults struggle for years without even getting this far?

I don't care if she makes money from this or not (although I know she will - even if just to family and friends) - she has learned the basic process.

Well I've found that in a lot of areas of life (not just business), it helps to look at things with the "simplicity" of a child's mind. As adults we usually have our heads filled with so many ideas about how difficult things are that it's no wonder some people have a hard time getting started and taking action.

Congrats to you and your daughter.

I went out for a bit and came home to see all of these wonderful words of encouragement.

It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you to everyone.

          Now for my confession:

I have been focusing more on my 13 year old son and was going to help him set up a business first. (They both have blogs with Adsense and such, but I mean a "real" business with their own products.) I thought my daughter might be too young to "get it."

I have been proven so very wrong, and I am so glad she simply took her own initiative and did it herself, without my help.

Am I proud? Oh, heck yes, I am!

Will I be working with both of them now? Oh, heck yes, I will!

There's always one person to spoil it.

Also I've been online marketing since 2002, and though it has the occasional dark side, I'd never sum it up as a cesspool. (Makes me wonder what you are involved in).

I'm not going to reiterate what Kay has said, because she summed it up perfectly, but I will say this. My grandson is 5 years old and is already a whiz at Youtube. He loves looking at clips of helicopters and planes (His dad flies em), so I let him sit there flicking through. Or I did until he hit on one which showed an arm being severed. (I was traumatised, he thought the gore was great)!

The point I'm trying to make is it's our duty as adults to ensure we monitor what our kids are doing online, it sounds to me as though Shay is doing an excellent job of doing this by guiding her children through the pitfalls.

That is so great. Congrats to you and her!

I also have an 11 year old that runs circles around most adults with computers. In fact she helps her 5th grade teacher research items on the net and showed her teacher with a masters how to put a wallpaper on her computer!

My 11 year old has written articles for me and then ran over to CJ to match up affiliates to them.

How she got started was told her to write her own articles. She goes into Word and types away. I sat down to read it and about fell off the chair. Awesome!

We told her we would try them on Squidoo first to see how they do and if they did well we would add them to one of the websites, well...

She created her own Squidoo Lens just for one of her articles and she had 3 sales the first day! And yes she did her own HTML coding for the links and images.

So congrats to the OP on allowing your child the freedom to learn, its a great thing that we allow them freedom to do things and show us just like yours and mine have done.

Wait until your daughter asked you why do you ping your websites and lenses and I do not????

She pings her lenses everyday after school now after adding content or a module.

              * My daughters first lens is now in the top 100 in the category and moving up quickly. She added some come more content, amazon and cafe press items and away it goes.

Easy; we should think like children. When they are young (and have awesome, supportive parents like Shay) they haven't heard enough negatives to doubt themselves. Nobody told them they *can't* do it, so they just do it!

Us older folks have heard all the skeptics, but we need to push their voices out of our minds and pretend like nobody ever told us we couldn't do it. Amazing things can happen after that.

That's fantastic, Shay; you must be beaming with pride!

Think ahead a bit. One of my greatest achievements was graduating from
college. Even more satisfying was that I did every bit of it myself. There
wasn't any internet back then. Just low paying endless crappy jobs but the
    feeling of accomplishment never leaves.

One of my best friends kids has helped finance his education by building blogs
around online games. He has a site built around "World Of Warcraft" bringing
in around $1500 a month and he only works on it weekends.

I was watching a movie the other night (Amazing Grace), which was the true story of one guy's involvement in prohibiting the slave trade in Britain. His friend is set to be one of the youngest prime ministers.

So you have these two young guys (I think in their 20s?) who have these massive goals. And one of them said something to the effect of:

"We're too young to realize certain things are impossible."

I think is why kids are so darn good at making money online -- and that's especially true if they have parents like Shay who are showing them every day that it's possible! Shay's daughter's reality is that you can go online and make money. And so she will.

Now take a look around these forum. You'll see jaded folks here who say it's "impossible" to make an honest living online.

    Is it?

Of course not. But if you believe it's impossible, then that becomes your reality. On the flip side -- If you see mom doing it, then it never even occurs to you that it might be hard (and so it isn't).

Well done, Shay, on showing your daughter by example that she can make money online.

My 16 year old is also starting something very similar to this...but, she has another monetization model

In order for people to Join her community and view/post content -- they have to fill out a CPA offer

Since her target market is teenagers, she will have no problem getting email addresses/ zip codes that will pay her approx $2 a piece. She is going to buy a car with the money

Shay, kids are starting younger and younger. Imagine how "well off" your daughter will be if she sticks with it, pays attention, and gets creative with her marketing as the pieces fall into place.

Nice to see entrepreneurial kids. Gives them a sense of value and what things are worth. So many today look for handouts and having no sense of what things really cost have no respect for what they or other peoples property.

Well done Shay on your good work.

In this day and age parents are so pressurised to keep up with the things that kiddies want - i.e. brand name gear, going to the cinema with their friends etc

What a wonderful way for children to not only learn how to build blogs/websites and make money online but it will also give them the value of money.

In my home town, with the recession, 6 shops have closed in the last month and I truly believe the way to getting a regular income is certainly online. This is no doubt where our children are going to aim at and Shay's daughter is a prime example.

    Hi Shay:

Great work as a parent and fantastic job by your daughter. Please make sure she continues to be encouraged to blog, write, and consider putting out the book.

I can tell you as an author and public speaker that it is imperative you make her understand that while 1,000,000,000,000 would be superlative, she is a winner and rich for making the effort. Please do not let her feel that if she had a goal of selling 10, 50, 100, or 1000 E-Books and doesn't make it she did anything wrong or doesn't have talent.

Wish her luck and let me know if I can help (free advice obviously).

        Another thing about my daughter:

She asks a ton of questions. (Just like I did when I first came to the WF.)

        "Why are you doing that?"

"What are you writing those articles for?"

"How do people buy your stuff?"

"What is that 'Buy Now' thingie on your blog?"

        "How do you get paid?"

Now I realize that she was absorbing and assimilating all of those zillions of answers - and simply put them together on her own.

Again - how many adults buy a dozen e-books and still don't "get it"?

        I am just amazed.....

I have to say - since coming to the WF, we have never been better off financially.

The kids have noticed, too! And they know that Mommy typing away at the computer is why. LOL

Congrats! I know the feeling. My daughter got paid $30 for an article
she wrote which was published in a magazine with worldwide distribution.

She was 10 at the time--last year.

Her story was the feature article and so I set up a blog for her where
she posts here drawings and stories. Of all my 4 kids she shows
the most interest in what I do online.

It's great when your kids want to follow in your footsteps.

I can honestly say I have not given her any "training."

She saw I had a blog - so she wanted a blog.

I was writing and getting paid - so she wanted to write and get paid.

I never sat down and laid out any steps - she just watched me and asked questions.

I guess you just need to let your 10 year old watch what you are doing!

I can pretty much sum up her coaching methods:

"Just quit watching tv and just do it!" (I kid you not - I asked her for her priceless pearls of wisdom to share with her new fans and that's what I got. )

          Now for a general comment:

She may make money with this and she may not - the important part to me is that she learns about the process with this. She already has the hard part down!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.

        An update:

She is almost finished with her second story.

We also sat down and brainstormed about other things she can do.

I asked, "What do you know that other people might like to know?"

She rattled off a few things (fashion, hobbies, etc.).

So now she has a list of 4 more products to work on.

This girl is going do a fantastic job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited!!!! SHE GETS IT!!!

PLUS - Big Brother (my 13 year old) has been watching. I do believe a little healthy competition is brewing.

Kids make us better marketers and clearer human beings

A child's perspective can often make us see complex things as what they really are -- a number of simple things bundled together.

They help us disentangle and clarify.

They help us find (simpler) solutions.

    Isn't it a great feeling?

    That is so awsome.

I myself have a niece and nephew who are just starting to take an interest in my online business.

Even though they haven't set anything up, my niece keeps throwing out ideas and keeps informing me about what the popular things are for her age group (11 - 14 year olds) and what is coming up that kids are excited about.

I took advantage of the Twilight movie thing because of my niece and I am currently making a little extra cash right now with some ring tones that her age group are really, really into.

Kids definately should not be overlooked.

I love the question you asked, "What do you know that other people might like to know?"

I am going to write that one down and ask my niece and nephew.

In fact I am going to ask my parents, my brother, and my sisters. You never know what they will come up with.

    Thanks

Our youngsters seem to be 'wired' automatically to handle computers and social media.
The old saying that the children are our future could never be more true than NOW!

It's also good that many kids these days have a social conscience up to the age of 14.

If they experience success by that age they will continue along that path, and who knows 'what' they can acheive?

Good luck to your daughter :-)

Kids have such a black-and-white outlook on things. They don't have jaded ideas about what works and what won't - because they know everything! Kids still think they can be an astronaut/brainsurgeon/ballet dancer/veterinarian when they grow up!

    Hi Shay,

Congrats on your daughter! I have a 10yo daughter myself.

Here's a quick way to get traffic to her blog. Go to http://www.vistaprint.com and get FREE business cards printed with the blog URL (Vista Print puts their advert on the back though, no big deal). Your daughter can then pass these cards around at school and get quick, fast traffic to her site.

Be sure to get us an update on how much your daughter makes 30 days from now!

    Good luck!

Why as a parent would you ever want to expose your children to this cesspool?
          You have to be kidding!

Kids are online from a very young age. What Shay's daughter is doing is learning something that could be very productive for her for a lifetime. I think any parent would be wrong to encourage children to "make money on the internet" as a goal.

It's different when the child has an interest in learning more and gets started on her own. One wonderful side effect is that this girl is doing something constructive online - not pretending to be 16 on a social site.

If you want to see a cesspool, look at what 11 yr old and up kids are doing on myspace and similar sites. They are online - and doing nothing productive. That same "invincible" attitude that Shay's daughter has toward working online is the attitude that those girls have when they give their addresses and personal to people and predators they meet online.

young kids may have a higher chance of suceeding online, simply because they're not corrupted by the mindset & social norms.

They see it, they like it, they do it.
If it's not working, they fix it.

We're tons of things to learn from your 11 year old, Shay...
    Nice work!

    I'm impressed and deeply motivated!

You should be so proud! What an inspiration and thanks for sharing. I think her age and lack of fear of failing helped her, that is usually what holds us adults back.

Sorry I did not check in earlier, everyone - we had severe weather last night, so no computer for me last night.

As far as the "cesspool" comment - where the heck are you hanging out on the Internet?

I am so thrilled with what my daughter has done (and what my son is now looking to do). She has done what so many others have not - created a product and marketing materials! Does it look like an 11 year old created them? Yes. But I am not concerned with having her make her first million with her first product. She would be happy with earning $10! (Key word - "earning.")

I sat down with my son last night and discussed what he wants to do. You know what he came up with? A video gaming review site that reviews the different gaming systems (he has several), reviews of video games and comparing and contrasting the different versions of the games. For monetizing, he wants to sell physical and info products related to gaming. Maybe a gaming site, down the road.

He was drawing up plans for the site and what to offer. (A really basic business plan.) AT 13!!!!

At 11 and 13, my kids are seeing how they can earn their spending money. They would rather earn their own money than get an allowance.

How many other 11 and 13 year olds do you know of with that kind of mindset??

I am thrilled. Thrilled beyond measure!!!

      LOL

We are going to re-vamp her blog and get everything loaded on it this weekend. She is so excited.

Her goal is to make $100 (to buy a guitar).

I told her to not be so concerned about the money aspect of it - if she makes one sale, she will have accomplished more than many adults have!

I am glad you like the thread!

I don't think I can give the website because of the self-promo rule. (It's not done yet, anyway. )

But I might post it on my WF blog when it's updated.

Tell her to join the business niche

Let her create 100 finance blogs, outsource articles to writers, she'll become a respectable business by the time she is 18 probably.

Oh, there are a bunch of other kids that I've met making a killing but they just wanna stick under the radar (haha!) for some reason.

    Check this out tho.

This kiddo lives in my city.

    HE's 8 i think.
