I just have to share this story either to warn people or to get advice.

Basically I had the idea to start a own gym and sell gym equipment. It's a bit more than an idea actually. I already established connections in China and developed a series of Strength machines and strongman equipment.

Already know which locations I am going to rent and have everything pretty much planned out even the marketing. All the websites are up and running too (expect the one for the gym).

Obviously I need a lot of money for this so I created a executive summary and went ahead and searched for investors.

Through LinkedIn somebody got me in contact with somebody who supposedly was the director of areslifesciences.com.

After some e-mailing back and forth I send him the executive summary and he got me in contact with Ernesto Bertarelli on Skype. Mind you that all these e-mail addresses and Skype id's seemed to appear real and were not linked with some yahoo or gmail accounts. They all seemed to be associated with areslifesciences.com.

After the meeting on Skype with Ernesto Bertarelli (or was he?) I was told that they would transfer a huge amount of money to my bank account as an investment for my business. Mr Ernesto (or at least the guy I talked to on Skype)
referred me to chasejohnson.co.uk/ and said that this was his private bank.

The instruction was to send them my passport ID and bank details for the transfer. The private bank e-mailed me back with confirmation and said I had to pay a fee for this transaction. I told them to withdraw the fee from the amount of money that was being transferred to my bank account (like any normal bank does). They refused and said I had to wire the money to them.

I became suspicious and shared my concern with the assistant of Mr Ernesto. He basically told me I wasted their time and if I didn't wire the money for the transaction fee within 24 hours that the deal was off.

I told them I couldn't afford the transaction fee anyway (trust me it's a very large amount of money) and I never heard from them again.

The question is.. Were these people pretending to be Mr Ernesto and his team or was I dealing with the real Mr Ernesto and his team of people.

Either way there was no contract and no terms or conditions which on itself is already very strange.

I have 12 hours left to wire the money to the private bank before the transaction is officially canceled. I really need some advice from people on this situation that I'm. Please note that either way I can't afford the transaction fee and I am not going to take this risk.

I will not leave this message up too long because I don't want to damage Mr Ernesto his reputation. However, I would really like to get some answers.

** UPDATE **

It is confirmed that I was indeed approached by a scammer. Thankfully he did not get my money.
Hopefully, this story alerts other people.

Very interesting. Looks very familiar to a 'fee for withdrawal' system mentioned in some 419 cases. Out of curiosity, how much is the 'fee'? Are you sure you're dealing with a legit bank?

The 'fee' is 0,5% over 250,000USD. I have to pay my rent with that so there is no way I can afford it. I am not sure that I am dealing with a legit bank at all. Some links on the website don't even work. For example, the privacy policy link doesn't seem to work (on the bottom of the website) which is very strange.

Contact banking authorities in the UK. They should be able to let you know if the bank is legit and also if the fee is legit. Anyway, the MO sounds very similar to 419 scams. Look up that term '419 scam' on Google and study how the scam works. Very familiar structure as your story.

The fee is way too high and it does look to me like someone is trying to rip you off.

I personally would not go through with this. The scam alarm has just gone on.

Very interesting; you'd have to be living on another planet to have missed the constant association of this type of scam with emails from Nigeria. But I looked up the term as you suggested, and found a Wiki entry that claims the US leads the pack:

"While the scam is not limited to Nigeria, the nation has become associated with this fraud and it has earned an unenviable reputation for being a center of email scam crimes. The top three nations of origin of these scams are the United States, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria (in that order). Other nations known to have a high incidence of advance fee fraud include Côte d'Ivoire,[2] Togo,[3] South Africa,[4] the Netherlands,[5] and Spain.[6]"

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.
Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

This might very well be a 419 scam. However, these scammers would be far more intelligent then the scams you see in your e-mail box from people of Nigeria or Africa.

Definitely a scam. If they really thought that it was worth it to give you that much. 0.5% would just be a drop in the bucket.

Do NOT send them any money - it's a scam...whenever you're contacted by someone unexpectedly offering you money that requires a fee, it's probably a scam.

Don't risk your rent out of eagerness - it's what they're counting on to scam you.

They have my bank details and a copy of my passport. I hope they can't do much damage with it. Can anybody advice on this? Thanks everybody for confirming that this is a scam.

Without sounding rude and based on the little info you gave, did you really think some one was going to dump 250k without any strings attached into a "gym equipment selling" business? I mean honestly, it shouldn't even be a question that this is an obvious fraud...

This is such an old scam I can't believe it's still around, that being said I suppose many people still don't know any better and their greed just overtakes reason..

I meant that this scam still exists because of the greed of the people. Obviously you didn't contribute to it since they didn't get anything from you.

No one is calling you greedy or judging you. You got caught in the first part of the scammer's trap. Con artists are good at this. And you became wise to their scam before any monetary damage was done.

People who have been scammed, can be held responsible to their bank for the loss. Yikes!

As a business owner (and as an older f@rt) I would never look for money online. You don't say what country you are in, therefore getting in touch with the FBI would be useless unless you are in the USA.

"IBN," do you mean IBAN? That is only a bank's number. Do the scammers have any way of acquiring your bank account number?

I would check back with your bank to see about changing your accounts.

Then I would call the passport office in your country to tell them what has happened. You may need a new passport, because with a copy, the thieves can create a counterfeit passport, and sell that to other scammers who want an identity change.

Just play it safe, and good luck with this.

Thanks Don. I certainly got a wake up call from this. Yes, the scammer has my bank account number which he asked for so that he could supposedly transfer the funds. I already checked with my bank and they say he can't do anything with my bank account number. I am from The Netherlands.

I believe there is a risk for the passport copy he received via e-mail (although it was somewhat poorly scanned on the computer). I will certainly consider getting a new passport. Thanks for your kind words.

No offense, but if you are being lured in by obvious scams like this, I'd be very careful as I try to secure funds for my business idea. In general, you are highly unlikely to get any money for a mere idea.

And if you were to interest a serious bonafide investor, your own prior business history, credit, industry experience would be critical.

I am sorry if I sound too harsh but in my opinion you are too naive to run a business. Only a 5-year old could belive that someone from somewhere would actually send you $250,000.00 because they like your idea. This is simply ludicrous.

If I were you I would close your bank account and get a new passport immediatly otherwise they will find a way to screw you. My feeling is that you are getting screwed already.... you just don't know that yet.

It's great that your dreams are important to you but chances that you will find an investor for your idea in the real world are rather slim.

Again.... I am sorry if I was to harsh.

Basically, you are calling me naive for believing that somebody would ever invest in a company I devoted four years of my life to. I couldn't think of a greater insult right now.

I am not naive. You are naive and close minded for thinking that. Many people fell for this scam and I did not end up giving the scammer any money.

Also, I already explained it's much more then an just an idea. I have a real company and this was a project that I created for it. Do your research before you start giving people insults that only make you look like the person that is naive. You don't know me and you never will so what is the point in judging so harshly? Have a good look in the mirror son. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but you really went out your way to insult me, so don't expect me to be nice to you.

Dude, you are over reacting. I can assure you that I had absolutely no desire to insult you but I admit I had to giggle a little when I was reading this thread.... just like everybody else.

But I will say again that you are on naive side and you can call me narrow minded if it makes you feel better, I really don't care.

You told me to look at the mirror.... OK. I see a dude who lives on 51st floor in downtown Chicago and drives 96K special order MB CLS 550 with wooden steering wheel. It isn't that bad, is it?

And if I needed $250,000.00 I would go straight to my bank. Banks are desperate right now to lend money to qualified borrowers and I would certainly qualify.

You claim that you have a real company so why don't you go to a bank to get a business loan? We both know the answer. Bankers know their business and they don't lend money based on "oh so precious" dreams. They would show you the door.

This time I am not going to apologize even if I was too harsh.... you earned that.

You're right I was outta line. However, I don't believe you are in the position to judge me and call me naive. You don't know me as a person or the history of my company and where it is going. I assure you I will succeed. If it makes you feel good to say that I won't succeed because of this or that.. Go ahead. This only makes me want it more. And I will make it you can count on that.
Nothing you say or believe will change that. We create our own reality.

I am actually happy for you that you live nice and own a luxury car. I don't see how it is relevant though since there are plenty of rich people who still are narrow minded, but nonetheless I am happy you are doing well.

Boasting about it doesn't impress me though. I would be more impressed if you somehow managed to stay calm and be the better man then be rude and harsh towards me again.

So, they have your name, Bank Acc#, Passport #?
If that's the case i would still be a little worried, these Nigerian scammers
are very crafty and may still find a way to exploit your info...

I have a friend, a very smart guy I knew from school. He had
a TV program where he tutored high school kids who called
into the program. Someone offered to help fund the program
by sending U.S postal money orders and asked him to send back
a certain percentage after he cashed them. He got them cashed
and then learned they were FAKE money orders. The judge gave
him 3 years in prison I think.

A couple witnesses tried to plead with the judge that he was
a smart guy, great math teacher etc., but as far as the judge
was concerned he should have known that it didn't make
sense for someone to send you money and ask for some
back. The only Person who does that is God. He asks for
    10%.

    Anyone else is the devil.

this is just a minor twist on the nigerian 419 scam (which seems to be popular in england now )

anyways - they are not after your bank details.. the scam is to get you to wire them the fake "transfer fee".

That's a classic scam ... asking for a "transaction fee" before you could collect the money that would actually never come.

I'm so glad you figured this out before sending any money.

No it's you just being paranoid. I was here looking for advice and later I updated the topic confirming it was a scam. I also updated it with it not just being an idea since a lot of people give me negative feedback on that. I thought linking to the actual executive summary in the text would help make people understand that before they respond to me saying i'm crazy for thinking somebody would only invest in an idea. Just to be clear.. I have devoted 4 years of my life to my company and this is one of the many projects I created for it. It's much more than an idea because it's not an early stage project. Everything is planned out and I only needed the funds to get the products on the market.

I removed the link to the actual executive summary to remove any suspicion about me wanting to lure investors which is not the case at all.

In fact, by now I realize I much rather make enough money with my company and start the Strengthwithin Gym project with my own money someday unless I find a person I really want to work with. I have no expectations of finding that person here.

Not sure what is up with the negative responses.. But I don't deserve this kind of negative feedback. I was simply looking for advice and hoping to alert people about this at the same time.

Never pay a fee for an investor. If they have money, they should cover that too.

If you want seed capital, go to an established, reputable VC company and make your pitch. (Tim Ferriss has some good ideas on doing this, just check his blog.) But don't do anything other than make the appointment online. Everything else, you do physically, in person.

I am glad that you realized it was a scam. Any genuine investor and bank would automatically deduct the fee and not ask you for it.
Just keep putting it out there and a genuine investor may come along.

    Just as an obvious caution.

They're willing to send you $250,000 but they can't afford to
call you on a telephone instead of over Skype?

They're willing to give you $250,000 without ever meeting you
    or talking to your accountant?

I'm glad you worked out this was a scam.

Probably really obvious to you in hindsight.

I agree with the others that said it's a scam. If they were really interested in working with you they would have done so by agreeing to take the fee out of the money you were asking for as an investment.

Anyone who see's a good to deal make money through an investment will be more willing to work with you and not run away as quick as these guys.

One of the first things to be aware of is when anyone asks for passport and banking info or ID's first to start or complete a deal without providing more solid credentials or security measures is most likely a scammer.

During the glory days of the first dot com boom, I worked for a venture capital company. People WILL give you millions just for an idea. However, you have to have a business plan and also be willing to let in people from the VC fund or allow some oversight. But yes, people do get lots of money AS INVESTMENTS for ideas.
