Have you surveyed your email list? using survey monkey for example,

to do research using survey websites, to find out their problems, and build products around this research,

What do you ask them?
What questions did you ask them?

and is there any good list of questions you can ask your email list for research?

I do this quite allot with our different lists across niches, my main focus is:

    1. find out #1 frustration with achieving X, Y or Z - the better you define X,Y or Z - the better answer you will get

    2. I ask what approaches they have tried or what has NOT worked for them in achieving their desired outcome

    3. What would their optimal solution be?

    4. Why do they want to ahieve X, Y or Z...gets to the root of the desire

For me, that is the only 4 questions you really need.

which survey site do you use?

and if you ask 2000 people this question, does that mean you have to see all of these 2000 answers one by one individually ?

I have used a combination of Survey Monkey (most often), Ask software, polling software on my blog (WP Plugins) and even, at times, just an email survey where I do have to analyze one-by-one.

Are any step by step procedures of how you do this, from start to finnish in any of your ebooks?

or do you care to outline the steps? (please)

eg, 1, get a Survey monkey account,
2, come up with 6 questions
          3, email your list

The core concept that you must keep in mind for any list is what is currently frustrating them.

Yes - but also what recent products/services they purchased.

Sometimes their latest purchases "What was the last book, magazine, DVD, webinar, seminar..." that you purchased...gives even more insight into their desires and frustrations than asking them to tell you about it.

Most of the time you ask them questions so you can target your traffic better.

    Name
    Where they live
    Income
What they most fear in your niche
How much do they know in your niche
What would they like to better them self's in your niche

A few more questions to find out what they are looking for.

This is going to help you target your traffic better and find/make a product suitable for your list. A good list builder will build a list before they have a product in mind.

I have personally used Survey monkey for my list with great results. My niche was Alternative Energy which was a broad niche. Then I used the survey to target my customers in finding a product the majority was looking for. The price range they could spend. The best location to target for. The age I should look for. Even the sex will matter in some niches.

    Hope this helps you

A survey is very helpful to find the right product to manage and also keep good relationship with your customers.

good topic.. I was looking into doing the same to improve relationship with my lists..
I've been looking for one and of course found survey monkey and some (cheaper) alternatives..

However I don't want to pay for it yet as I just want to test it out and try it out but surely when I use the free accounts what I want is not available (and don't want to waste time finding that out) so went of to search a free one.. and found it:

    https://www.limesurvey.org/en/stable-release

it looks pretty damn amazing will install it tomorrow.

If you have getresponse as your autoresponder you can actually use that to send out a survey, they have that function and looks fairly easy to use though I've not used it yet.

The whole point of a survey is to understand your customers better. When you know their pain points, and speak their language, they will listen to you because you care, and understand what drives them -- what they are struggling with.

You should keep that in mind when surveying your list as this can be a very powerful marketing tool, not only to find product ideas. The exact questions really depend on the niche you are in, but they should definitely ask for their history and their goals. Try to avoid multiple choice questions even though they seem easier to analyze. You want to pick up their vocabulary so that you will be able to communicate as if you were one of them.

Of course you will come up with product ideas along the way, no doubt about it.

    Hope that helps :-)

Multiple choice questions are fine and should serve your immediate needs quite well. But open-ended questions, as Jan suggested, are sometimes better because they do allow your target audience to get beyond the limited choices you've presented to them - and expose blind spots you may have overlooked.

I send a link (mine is self-hosted) to my list quarterly a couple of weeks before I work on schedule/projects/campaigns/plans for the next quarter.
