Does GoDaddy disclose customer information?

I have a few domains registered with GoDaddy and they are about to expire. However, I keep getting emails from other people telling me that my domains will be available on auction shortly. I understand that the domain may be listed on GoDaddy for auction, but is my email address displayed, too? If yes, is it permissible? I mean, I'm tired of getting this type of emails from some guy called Alex. Further more, if I want to unsubscribe, I need to click on the link where more information about the auction is presented, and follow some advice that is available at the bottom of the page.

Isn't this spam?

As a domain owner your email is publically available on hundreds if not thousands of "whois" databases. your living address and phone number too depending on the database. all the information you entered in at godaddy upon ordering your domain name. that's why i'd advise using a po box, a work address (assuming of course you have a job) or just a fake address all together.

search your domain at www.whois.com and see what comes up

That's the strange thing - my email address isn't showing up, so how did that Alex guy get his hands on it?

Well, there IS a requirement that valid contact info on domains shows up. Even godady warns that failure to do that could cause it to be DELETED if ICANN does an audit, and they DO, from time to time. Several years ago though, I believe it was over 7 or 8 years ago, they gave the 2nd tier registrars full responsibility for that. Since about that time, they allow obfuscation of that info.

WHO KNOWS how that works though? There is a law in the US protecting SSNs and anther protecting medical records and another protecting credit info, and THAT stuff is now near worthless because those laws aren't followed!

BTW Phone slamming is ILLEGAL, and phone companies are required to record things, etc... The same laws SHOULD apply to domain name slamming(what you are talking about), but apparently DON'T. INCREDIBLE!

As stated by other users the domain information, unless registered privately, will be available on the WHOIS database for others to see. Even if you have privacy, the email listed will act as a forward so you still get inquires but your actual address isn't displayed. If you are worried about your account being compromised in anyway I encourage you to reach out to our 24/7 support team.

What would really be nice, is if you'd actually answer the posters original question.

        Does GoDaddy disclose customer information?

And if you do answer it, I have one of my own.

Does GoDaddy sell, buy, sequestor or in any other way, profit from historical domain availability searches?

        Thanks

Alexa, I know you're with NameCheap, did you ever have this problem? I'm considering switching to them, if they are okay and don't send so many emails.

I don't think it is all that difficult to get the email and snail mail addresses of domains due to expire. I have had similar emails 'warning' me that I would lose my domain name if I did not register with 'so and so' and have received snail mail also.

I think it is a growing business frightening people and charging exorbitant renewal fees and it has been going on for many years.

My latest co.uk domain renewals sparked snail mail letters asking for £75.00 (about $53.00) for a renewal.

Snail mail gets shredded and emails get deleted. I always reregister with the original registrar and I NEVER try to unsubscribe as that simply tells the spammer they got through to you.
