I Hate Opt In Boxes!

Hey Guys.

I don't know about you but the little technical aspects of setting up a website can get a little annoying at times.

Let's take opt in boxes as an example. If you decide (or have no choice but) to go the cheap route, then you will probably go with a free Wordpress theme and drop your opt in box code (supplied by autoresponder provider) into a text widget that you've placed in your sidebar.

Seems simple enough right?

The challenge however, can come when you decide you want to change the submit button to something more like the Belcher button. So far I don't think I've ever successfully made that adjustment by fiddling with the button code.

Being as impatient as I am I ended up switching to a premium theme popular among marketers called OptimizePress and I must say I'm quite happy with the results. I can now change the submit button to any image I want no problem.

But I guess I have a tendency to seek out problems whenever things seem to be running too smoothly. So one day I decided to follow a clever strategy I learned from Michael Young and add an opt in form at the bottom of a blog post.

Now keep in mind this was not going to be the same opt in form that I had in the sidebar.. oh no.. I wanted to create a completely different list here.

Oddly enough I figured all I would need to do was paste the form at the bottom of the article and I'd be good to go. That's not quite how it worked out for me though. To say I had a hard time trying to figure out how to get this (seemingly) simple element added to my blog post is perhaps the understatement of the century.

I literally spent hours on Google searching for a solution and I was thrilled to finally find an excellent one on a really helpful blog owned by Natalie Lussier.

Maybe I'm dunce for not having thought of this but she pointed me to a free WP plugin that did exactly what I was looking for and even gives you the option to strategically include an image of your "Free Gift".

The plugin is called Magic Action Box and you can see exactly how Natalie sets it up on her blog post found here.

Hopefully if you've been struggling to figure out a simple way to include an opt in box at the end of your articles, you'll find this time saving tip useful.

  • That is an extremely useful plugin! An opt-in at the end of a post can make a lot of people sign up on your list. Thanks for the information.

    • Glad you liked it.

I can't tell you how long I searched for a way to do this. As I mentioned above I use OptimizePress to build my websites (and love it) but although there is an option to add a second opt in box in the body of the blog post, I just could seem to get it to look the way I wanted it to.

What I also forgot to mention was that it didn't give me the option to have the second optin box send subscribers to a different list.

Magic Action Box really makes this easy and I get the impression it works with any theme.

    • There are many solutions for this indeed. But I think Rok is talking to those who are a bit challenged by the tech aspects of the business.

I find it interesting, I wouldn´t consider lil solution here or there worth sharing. Yet, it IS useful for a lot of people.

To the OP, thanks! I am learning, a lot, from this.

  • Another thing to try is pasting the opt in code at the bottom of the .php file that generates the posts. But thanks for the info, I'll check it out.
  • Thanks Rok for the information. Always good to be shown other ways to do things. That is what is so great about this forum, you can learn something new every time you visit.
  • Seems a good idea, but she doesn't use it on her own website!
  • The problem is posts can have social buttons at the bottom also.
By having too many options it is confusing for the reader.
It's a choice between someone opting in via a plugin or having your posts go viral.
