Newbie-Is it reasonable to believe I can make money in travel niche?

Hi everyone- I am a newbie that has been lurking and learning all summer and have developed some ideas to (hopefully) monetize, but would love some clarity or encouragement before I proceed. One thing I am puzzled about is that most of the warriors seem to be making money promoting products on how to make money! Is this the only way to get started quickly? My interest and knowledge is in niche travel and tourism. I don't mind putting in some hard work, but if this area just doesn't have any potential to be lucrative, I don't want to waste my time getting started. Is anyone making money in this or a similar (non-IM) market? If so, any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

    What aspect of the travel niche are you going to focus on? Do you want to write reviews of tourist destinations or what?

    There are a lot of travel related affiliate programs (from airfare and hotels to books on every major city in the world) or you could write your own ebooks.

      Travel is really a hot niche. Just check the statistics of the travel and tourism industry. This niche is good. Go ahead. There are many niches you can make bucks, the IM niche is not the only one.

        Travel is a great niche. BUT, I think it's really important to carve out your own little corner of it to make it a success.

        Rather than building a general web site about travel, pick a particular destination, like Tuscan holidays or Cancun, Mexico, or focus on a specific market, like "budget honeymoons" or "best surfing in North America."

        You're going to find super high competition with a general travel site (like the Travelocity and Expedias out there) but should do well with a tighter focus and niche.

        Good luck! Some day, I'm gonna do a travel site myself!

            If you've made money online before then the logical progression for many is to teach others how to do it too. It would be very difficult to have any success in this niche though if you hadn't already made money so it's not advisable for newbies.

            It is reasonable to believe that you can make money in any niche, as long as you market to it properly. Unfortunately although I know the travel niche is a good one, it doesn't automatically mean you will be successful straight away. You'll probably have to test lots of different strategies until you find some that work well in your niche. I can't really help you as travel isn't my niche, but there's tons of great information here on the forum so I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work for you. Just persevere - you may be successful straight away or it may take longer, but don't give up.

              Thanks so much for all of your encouragement and intelligent replies! What a terrific forum. You have inspired me to spend the entire day on the computer doing more research!
              One more question, if anyone is still around...if one has a substantial (30-50) pages of detailed, money saving, and informative information, would it be best to monetize it by making it into an info-product or chopping it up and using it for artcles or a newsletter?

    Hi Pmt3,

    Let me share with you a story.

    A friend of mine joined a facebook group that have many active travel enthusiasts and they are always actively discussing about travel.

    He contributed alot of quality content for 6 months by sending them links to quality travel sites.

    The members soon get to know him and love him. It is all about building credibility.

    He also made friends with the admin.

    He did a JV with the admin at the 6th month and send an affiliate link of a CPA programme.

    18 members sign up and each signup is a USD$1000 commission.

    In less than 2 days, he earned USD$18,000 and part of it is shared with the admin.

    So is this good money?

    I think one of the big reasons it looks like everybody makes their boodle selling how to make money info is because this is a forum focused on ways to make money. It's why we're here.

    So the people making promotions, via WSO or in their sigs, aim for the target they see - people trying to make money.

    In addition, there are so many sharp marketing people here that mentioning too many specifics about a profitable niche could garner a lot of immediate and competent competition.

    The travel niches can be very good, as long as you don't try to take on the Travelocity and Expedia types. They're entrenched, and their pockets are so deep the average entrepreneur would suffocate under the lint. On the other hand, they can't match the personal touch brought by someone with both knowledge of, and love for, a particular tiny niche.

      Hi,

      Well one thing you could do is to create a website around interesting activities that visitors/tourists could do in your part of the country and blog on undiscovered or little known hideouts in your city.

      Not everyone is a Lonely Planet Fan. You could attract quite a crowd looking to take the offbeat track and then monetize your traffic by tying up with local outfits on a lead generation basis. The tourist gets a discount if they approach the travel agency/tour operator through your site and you make a commission off every customer. Then there's google adsense, selling ebooks etc.

      Just a thought.
