Google Webmaster Tools Error

Hi,

As I was checking my GTW, I observed that it says:

Access denied: 1 error
Not found: 77 errors

And down in the list there is a single thing labeled "priority 1", as URL:
cgi-bin/
Near it I have "response code: 403"

If I click on it, then I get this message:
Googlebot couldn't crawl your URL because your server either requires login to access the page, or is blocking Googlebot from accessing your site.

I did not block Google in the robots.txt, so I have no idea where this comes from.

What could have caused it and how can I solve it?

Is this bad? To me it looks like a humble "Google cannot find his way in"... but that could influence the SERPS, I guess... because it's an error.

  • Shipwrecked,

I wouldn’t worry about Google not being able to access that directory. It is commonly blocked by default in a lot of wordpress setups and webmasters in general block bots from seeing it. If you really want Google to see it, you can try and find an answer in here. Sometimes directives in your .htaccess file can prevent bots from seeing a directory,

Can't access cgi-bin directory off of Document Root - Dev Shed

As for your 77 not found, you may want to address that. This can have an impact on SEO as those URL’s are indexed and users can’t click through to see the content because there is nothing at that location. After a while, Google just drops these from the index which is lost opportunity for exposure of your site.

    Hope that helps,

Although not a problem if you don't want Google to crawl this directory or attempt to as the case may be then you should added it to your robots.txt file which will tell Google to ignore it in future.

Google will give you some love for doing this
