8 Tips For New People to IM

1. Niche - Please look into niches outside of IM, Weightloss, Dating! Just because they are large and evergreen doesn't mean they are best for beginners. It means they have tons of competition and high level of industry change (ie. regulations, trends etc. that you MUST keep up with). Also high advertising costs in PPC. I suggest researching niches before jumping in, and choose something you enjoy.

2. Product Creation - Don't make a product that you know nothing about. ie. a beginner making an ebook "How I Make 3 Million a Year in IM" obviously you don't, nobody will buy it from you when you post on warrior forum "Please help, how do you set up an email list".

3. SEO Reliance - SEO can work great for some people but please realize what it is good for and what it is not. If your goal is to make 1-5k per month quickly, no way will you be able to achieve this with SEO. SEO is a long slow process. Generally best for blogs because their monetization level is usually lower. For online business where you sell a product or service, you should learn paid methods. SEO will limit you to only a low amount of sales. Also realize if Google wants to introduce a change today, all your SEO work could disappear and you will basically start from scratch. Example: Google Panda

4. Fast Money - You aren't going to make $x(xxxx).00 tomorrow. Sorry. If you have a bill to pay, you should probably do something you will get a return out of. Mow lawns, look at craigslist for odd jobs, ask friends and family for a loan, anything else except IM. I have been at this for years and have seen many people try to make $50 bucks, $300, $20,000 in a short period when they have no experience. None ever succeed. I won't say its impossible but seriously, I would bet money against you as a sure shot. This doesn't mean you can't make money online quickly, your only real options to consider online are probably limited to fiverr or anywhere you can get people to hire you for labor. Even these aren't always easy. You may find yourself working at $1-5 per hour!!!!!!

5. Email List - Build a list. I personally don't rely on my main income from email but its icing on the cake and doesn't really cost anything. Most people make a large percentage of their money through email, so basically, having emails never hurts!!! So just do it!

6. Mentor - Get a mentor. Find someone who is already successful to guide you. I have mentored people who are doing everything backwards. I tell them "Don't do this, don't do that... I tried it already, doesn't work" then they save lots of time and money from my experience. This is probably the number 1 thing a new person can do to get ahead.

7. Shiny Toys - Don't buy tons of products! IM is not everything, if you become successful you will find yourself making money from the same things, you will identify yourself primarily as one thing: publisher, advertiser, emailer, search marketer, internet business owner... etc. IM products really span the gauntlet of what is out there. Guys making millions in email may have no clue about PPC marketing. Why should they if its not part of their business? Focus on one thing and learn it well. A plumber doesn't ALSO learn how to be an electrician and a medical doctor... why would you spend time and money learning email, search, programming etc... pick something and get good at it (and hopefully make money with it , then learn the next thing.

8. Is it for you? - Lastly, IM is not for everyone. If you can't keep yourself working on your projects, flip flop all over on different ways to make money... and after a long time can't make money... then its probably not for you. Know when to quit. Don't work 40 hours at a day job 20 hours in IM for your whole life to never make any money at it... you are just wasting your time. If you only want to do it because its 'cool' or you want to be a millionaire then its probably not for you. If you really ENJOY it, and you are the kind of person that can keep focus and work on your own, then you have a good shot, just keep working hard and you will make it!

That's my main advice for new people to IM... if you are new, I hope you got something out of it.

Shiny Object Syndrome isn't bad if you have money and time to dedicate to learning ie. I will spend one year learning everything about IM in general before I learn something specific and actually FOCUS to make money. Its good stuff to know and this is how I started. I was making money running an offline business just online and while I was I was learning a bit of everything. Now I only focus on what is important to my business.

Most people this kills them.... they wonder why they aren't making money but its very obvious to any 3rd party.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything mentioned except #1. I believe if a newb has experience in any of these three areas and can teach upon them or improve on products already in the marketplace then that is the place to start. While there may be high advertising costs in PPC, there are other sources that a newb can learn very quickly...solo ads for example. Also, since these niches are the three biggies, I believe it opens more opportunities for JV's, advertising possibilities, affiliate possibilities, etc.. Otherwise, great post...thanks for sharing!

I don't disagree, if they want to start in these niches they can succeed here, but I would highly recommend they work in a niche they are interested in, which for most people is NOT IM, weight loss or dating. Key is my last sentence "I suggest researching niches before jumping in, and choose something you enjoy." If you don't enjoy what you are talking about, its not a great place to start for you. People shouldn't just choose a niche because its big and "everyone" else is doing it.

And everyone may have a different opinion but I personally don't think any newb should start in IM since they are a newb. LOL this is the current state of business unfortunately 'blind' leading the 'blind'.... If you knew the affiliate blog you read daily was written by someone who never made a penny from affiliate marketing, would you continue to read it?

I agree that anyone entering an online (or even offline business for that matter) has a certain degree of passion and knowledge for the niche they are entering. They should also do their due diligence through proper research upon entering a niche as mentioned. And I agree that not any newb should start in the IM, weight loss, or dating niches UNLESS they have proper knowledge, passion, and valuable information they can share. For instance, if somebody has perfected a system of online dating that is different than all the others, has dates lined up at will, and can provide a system for others looking to have success with online dating should he not enter the dating niche? In this instance there would be no "blind leading the blind" because he has a proven system that others in the dating arena may find very valuable. However, I do agree there are plenty of illegitimate people out there that are trying to teach methods that they have not successfully used themselves (especially in the IM niche). Anyways, just my $.02 cents!

  • You forgot take action! So many people give themselves excuses for not taking action such as, "oh it probably doesn't work", or, "I'll get round to it but 'this' has to be perfect to be able to do it" or some other reason. Just get the engine going and don't stop until you've been through the whole process, tried it a gazillion times and it's made 0! Then you can say you've tried a method out properly!

Give up the dream of fast cash!

It's ONLY possible if you put in the work and lay the foundation so that you are in a position to make that money...

I don't agree with the niche section either though because you literally just took out the biggest industries in Internet Marketing...

Of course you can succeed in these industries. The fact there's so much competition means there is a lot of money to be made and you have a ton of examples to analyze in order to mimic in your biz

Good tips for beginners. I think ever beginner buys the shiny objects and then gets a bit wiser and realizes that there is no magic bullet. To be successful on line you have to be prepared to work.

Outsourcing is fine but you have to have a basic understand of what is required to be success online.

Cool list. I agree with the first 7 and partially with 8. There are plenty of millionaire marketers out there that didn't crack the code until their 2nd 3rd and even 4th year in the game. If they gave up, where would they be now? I'm not knocking your advice though...pretty solid

Well they don't necessarily. If their business is PPC => Email Autoresponders => Affiliate Offers and they are successful at this making money, do you see SEO or social media promotion as part of this business plan? The business plan only works if you know and focus on doing PPC WELL and setting up email autoresponders properly and selecting great offers. Not doing a half-a job with PPC and mediocre email autoresponders and terrible affiliate offer selection because you only know a little bit about these methods because you are also trying to learn social media promotion, SEO, and everything else under the sun.

PPC was the example I selected but replace it with any method or online activity that generates money...

Success in IM, depends on lots of knowledge with 'Take Action' attitude, when started IM 2 year back, first I confronted is influx of ideas from various sources, it was perplex situation where to start and how to go about, Though I am web designer, I wanted to see success from IM, I luckly got a mentor who drove in right path, I saw success in niche marketing, I found, for scaling it I need to Invest lot, and lots of hard and smart work required.., so I learnt one need to very dedicated for big success in IM and prepare to invest for the amounts depending on how much return he wants. I don't believe anything which says 'make money by click of a button'.

    THIS.

The most important factor to determine one's success or not.

Very good list. I must say that the only way you were able to make that list was from your experiences. Right? We all have had to go down that road at some time or another. The beautiful thing about Internet marketing is that we are developing a story for future marketers. They are coming by the droves and if you are a couple of lessons ahead of them then you can help. If the truth be told we don't know everything we need to know but it doesn't matter. We know where to get the answer. So failing online is not all bad IF you learn from your failures. We've all failed forward, and will probably continue until we learn better. I encourage all to go after what you feel you would like to pursue and don't make the mistake of saying "I wish I had done it when I had the chance".

Yup! Unfortunately, I did not have a mentor or discover that many great resources (ie Warrior Forum and other sites) when I started and spent a lot of time on trial and error. Definitely learned by doing that but it could have gone much faster for me!

Great info for sure, Brentb. I would also say that to those on here that it's a marathon, not a sprint. If you aren't careful it can completely consume you and you could loose friends, yet earn nothing. Keep in mind that it's a real business and if you want to make money in a real business it requires some actual work instead of a mythical push of a button.

    Happy marketing,

Great tips for the newbies or for anyone who is not doing very well online. I think I would place "Mentor" as number one because online business can become very expensive and overwhelming if you do not have some guidance.

The second I would place "Action", because no matter what you learn, if you do not take action, nothing will happen.

Building email list is really important, but you have to develop a good relationship with your list in order to eventually sell them anything. So many marketers from day one do nothing but push sales. Sure, they may offer some bonuses and such, but if that is all they give me I am not interested in a relationship with them and I unsubscribe. Sometimes marketers forget that their lists are are made from people and not just some names in an autoresponder.

Last, I really believe that if someone is passionate about a niche, even if the niche is a difficult one, it is possible to penetrate it and do well. Much of the stuff in the popular niches is pure junk. So if you post quality value content, and put some effort to on site and off site SEO (bearing in mind all the new updates), one definitely can become competitive in those market. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen.

    Another tip:

Internet marketing is complicated. You must study how it works if you want to understand what you are doing, and really make money. You cannot depend only on a mentor. You have to discover many things by yourself.

Without knowledge you will spend a lot of money and waste your time without having positive results.

    3 points...

SEO: agree, and it can take ages. I see too many chasing the latest SEO services - mostly offering 1st page etc. If you want to sell, then paid ads are the best way because they reach your targeted audience. Hardly any big marketer I know relies on SEO.

Product creation: Do something that you are passionate about. It makes it fun and keeps you motivated. Your passion may not seem as lucrative as selling IM products, but you will find your niche and fellow people who are just as crazy about your topic... this will make you more money long term.

Business: Finally and most importantly, you must treat this as a proper business if you want success. Sadly for newbs we are taught that it's easy, cheap etc, so we get complacent. Truth is (and I learnt the hard way) that you have to have a business plan, systems and guess what??? Understand marketing.

Internet Marketing is 2 words: Internet & Marketing. Sadly, too many ignore the 2nd word.
