Suggestions for Monetizing Hobby/Game Site

I know this is one of the tougher niches to monetize, but I did my best to search for other sites like the one I just launched so that I could see what methods they were using.
The niche is hobbies/board games and that sort of thing.
I picked out two example sites to study that were both using autoresponders and appeared to be making money from their site.
One uses AdSense almost exclusively, which isn't an option for me. So that's out.
The second mostly promotes Amazon products, which is what I have decided to go with. Also hunted down a few programs through CJ and Shareasale, but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas for how to get this idea off the ground, so to speak?
It's a game that involves strategy and has a passionate community, some of whom play competitively in tournaments. So there is potential.
Would it be worth exploring to create a membership site...? If so, could you recommend the best solution/provider for doing so that is reasonably priced and appropriate for a beginner?
