New here! Buying 1st website. Realistic or not?

INTERNET MARKETING

Hi Everyone

I joined the Warrior Forum just yesterday after a week or two of reading various threads and doing some initial learning about IM.

I am currently "between jobs" and looking to use the time I am not filling in lengthy application forms to do something new and interesting with any income made a real bonus.

I have discovered Flippa and I am tempted to buy a website whilst I have got the time on my hands to learn.

Am I being realistic in the following?

Buy established website for up to $500
Generate income (net) of $150 per month
With time, help, advice and learning increase the income to $300 per month

I have a website in my sights!

All advice, comments and your thoughts very welcome

1. Define "established". You may be getting ripped off.

2. How much time will be required to generate $150/month and what is your plan?

3. Do you know how to properly research a site to avoid being scammed?

Seems like an achievable objective, only if you already have the expertise and experience. A lot of people spend years online without even making a $100 for the whole year.

If you're sure that website is worth the money, go for it. On the other hand, if you're really new to making money with websites, think again before putting in your money.

I do not recommend paid traffic for a newbie. It can get VERY EXPENSIVE quickly. My recommendation to newbies is always to go the Amazon Associates route. Start a product review site in a niche that you are familiar with and target low-competition products.

By targeting low-competition products, you can typically rank very easily. A site like this with 50 or so product reviews will almost always result in some level of monthly income. Don't stop at 50. Keep building.

I'm not a expert when it comes to Flippa but i agree withWolfmmiii, be very cautious.
There are quite a few threads here about Flippa scams, website stats, earnings etc. being
fiddled...
Maybe you can get someone like Suzanne (sbucciarel) to have a look for you...

My advice would to be to start your own from scratch.

  If I were to buy a site on Flippa I would first learn how to perform proper due diligence so as not to spend money on a site that isn't performing like stated. To do this I would do a search here on the Warrior Forum for any Flippa posts that pertain to buying websites. If you notice a particular warrior that knows his/her stuff see if they'd be interested in helping you in avoiding certain pitfalls (salegurus already offered a suggested person). Also, there are PLR sites for sale that are pretty turnkey (however, you will have to buy a domain and hosting, then upload to your server or pay to have this done on a site like Fiverr). You may want to research these as most are not very expensive, but look for high quality as a lot of PLR is known to be pretty bad. Anyways, not trying to discourage ya from buying the site you have in mind, just make sure it's legit. Hope this helps.

Congratulations on your decision to diversify your income options by getting involved with online marketing : - ) However buying an established is not a good idea if you do not already know how to create, manage and update a site. Even if it is earning monthly income, it is doing so because the original website owner has the knowledge needed to get it up, running and generating income.

There some basic things that you should focus on learning if you want to be doing online marketing on a longterm basis, are things such as :

Market Research - How to pick a good market that you have an interest in which also has good profit potential.

Keyword Research - How to find low competition keywords to create content on, that you can also get ranked in the search engines.

Websites/Blogs - How to set them up, manage them and optimize them.

Content Creation - Whether you want to create the content yourself or have it outsourced. You will need to have content that will be interesting, engaging and helpful to your market.

Traffic Generation - How to get Free Search Engine, Social Media, and other sources of traffic. And then moving on to other forms of traffic such as solo ads and paid traffic.

A better approach to getting started by investing in an established site might be to enroll in a free training program like affilorama, or purchase a membership to a very step-by-step training site like Chris Farrell's membership site. This way you be able to learn more about what all is involved in creating, maintaining and growing a website before you invest in a pre-built one. Sometimes the easiest way is not the best way.

If you are good at optimizing website to make them convert better, that is a good strategy. However, you also want to be careful of what kind of websites you're buying on Flippa etc. Some of these website's are thrown together quickly just to make a quick sale, so you don't want to be stuck with a website that doesn't pan out.

If you're new to IM and would like to buy a website I suggest that you try the Complete Websites for Sale section in the forum where you can get some good deals from reliable sellers on the Forum. You can check the sellers feedback in the thread and choose from different packages available.
