In the vanilla wordpress install, there is an icon in the post/page editor that has a T on the icon. This allows you to post in PLAIN TEXT.

The other option is click the HTML tab and paste it in plain text there, and flip back to VISUAL to edit it like you want.

    Hey Dave...

    Do this:

Copy and paste your text into Notepad first, and the paste it into the text editor on your blog... you can add any bold, italics etc into manually then

    Peace

Yea, that is what I do too. Works like a charm.

Or I just write my blog posts while actually on the "New post" page and I have a spell checker plug in for firefox so it underlines my typos and misspelled words in read so I can just right click on teh work and it will suggest the correct spelling.

I always write the article in notepad first then paste it into wordpress, then I make whatever changes to the format I want. It is really easy when you do it this way as wordpress has pretty much everything you need right in the visual editor. There is also an icon on the visual editor that will open up another line of editing options that give you more stuff you can do like underline, etc.

I can sympathize with your aggravation since I also had the same problems over and over again. I found that even "copy and paste" from Notepad to the Wordpress content box didn't work either (the spacing was all thrown off) unless you use the Ctrl V and paste to the clipboard first. Also check to make sure your Word Wrap is on in Notepad.

I now only write in Notepad and don't bother getting the post to look how I want until I get it into the Wordpress theme and use the visual editor.

Are you sure you aren't using wordpad?

It was because of these very issues that I started to use notepad.

I now use notepad for all text entry and then copy and paste into whatever program I am using.

But you are right. Wordpress can be very difficult and quirky. You end up having to submit to it and doing what it wants.

In notepad, when you are done writing, if you turn the word wrap off, then turn it back on before you copy and paste it into wordpress, your spacing will be fine, sometimes you have to do that to reset the formatting.

  • I write everything in Word. That way I can spell check it and make sure everything is up to par. I then copy what I wrote and paste it in Wordpad. Then I copy what I have in Wordpad into my Wordpress blog.

From there I use the editor to include hyperlinks and photos.

    It works like a charm!

when you are in your word doc

Alter all text so it is 'normal' and select your font/size etc.

If you select 'normal(web)' this is when it gets messed up in transfer (so I've found).

Its always good to write yyour articles in notepad so you dont get all that extra crap like you do when you write it in word.

WordPress has a special function to paste from Word... Copy (crtl+c) your article from Word then go to your Add New Post page and hit Alt+Shift+Z to show the hidden functions. It's the "paste from Word" option in your WP editor. Sometimes it keeps the formatting sometimes it doesn't.

Play around with it to see if it works for ya. The only other option is to paste from notepad or wordpad like others have suggested.

    Dave,

WordPress is only difficult when you first plunge in - when you've been using it awhile you'll find that there is usually a reason why it behaves as it does. The problem is that the documentation is written by techies who assume that you know what they're all talking about in the first place :-(

What you have to understand is that when you copy and paste text from any source where there is embedded formatting (fonts, line spacing etc as in Word) you copy the formatting along with the text. And WordPress doesn't always faithfully render the formatting unless you use the 'W' icon.

To avoid this you have to copy/paste text as plain vanilla without any formatting (which includes wordwrap from Notepad). Don't bother with plugins as they just complicate matters. When the plain text is in WordPress you can play around with it as you want. It's WYSIWYG which makes it quite straightforward.

The easiest way is simply to type the text straight into WordPress and format as you go.

    Good luck!

    Sarah

Thanks for all the wordpress tips. I've been having some problems with wordpress for awhile. It just isn't as simple as it could be.

Thanks for all the advice. What really got me mad was the fact that I had made 2 previous posts without a hitch, then the very last post it was behaving like a manic. How can it just switch like that ?

Anyway all sorted now thanks to you all.

BTW you would think with all the advances in technology it would be pretty simple adding a few lines of text to a blog.

Sadly Rich Text Editors are a joke right now. Active-X based text editors were improving, but everyone hates MS so they really haven't been picked up as well they might. It's hard to see how this is going to evolve but it really needs to.
