There are so many variables, including genre. I have heard that 1 day is probably not worth much. What you can do it to watch your placing carefully toward the end of your run. I signed up for 2 days and hit the Top 100 free so I added a day at about 10PM and made it all the way up to 9.

Having said all that, if you have other related books, with links in each book, you'll may derive more benefit.

The harsh reality is that the Select landscape has changed dramatically in the last six months... and even in the last two months.

Select FREE days aren't what they used to be LOLOL

Things are still changing, and getting numbers and stats to evaluate is usually a problem, so I hesitate to say much.

On the bright side, Amazon is adding some new categories, which can be good if you are writing in that niche. For instance, some YA categories seem to have been added in Nov. Last week I saw a post about a different new fiction category added. I don't remember what it was, except that it wouldn't affect my stuff. LOL

Anecdotally, the Great Blackout of January 2013, which happened last week, seems to have have tanked sales for a lot of lower level fiction authors.

Also, the Great Christmas Bump of 2011 was not duplicated in 2012 for a lot of authors... and let's not forget the $1.88/KOLL for Dec 2012. LOL

Select has changed enough that, depending on your genre, it may now make sense to skip the whole thing and place your books elsewhere from the beginning.

In my case, I am getting exactly the results I expected. I did place my stuff in Select only because I was publishing in Dec. I thought there might be a small chance that the holiday bump would happen, but I doubted it.

The rmain reason I chose to try Select was to see how many borrows I'd get. If they'd been significant, that might have been a reason to stay in Select. As it was the results were pretty much what I was expecting. Am I glad I tried it, anyway?

Yes, I am. Low sales at the beginning of the publishing cycle are not a large concern. The sales over the next few years? Yes... and I already have strategies that I'll be implementing over the next 12 months or so.

As it happens, and as I've mentioned elsewhere, my new series will be pulled from Select as soon as my 90 days are up and will placed with a niche retailer. At that point, I plan to leave that series alone... and get ready to publish my next series, ASAP.

You need to do your own due diligence. You need to be able to decide if the advice you are being given up-to-date or not?

The bottom line is, if you are planning on making a business of Kindle, especially fiction, you need to strike a balance between keeping on top of changes and ignoring them while you write more...

Over the long term, things like the changes I just mentioned, will have little affect on your sales over a 10 year period, for example.

Now back to writing. I have a projected goal of 4K to hit today -- to get back on schedule with my next series, and WF posts don't count! LOLOL

It hasn't been discussed on WF, that I am aware.

If you don't know about it, it probably hasn't affected you.

I heard about it on a mainly fiction forum, so the changes might be just on fiction. This is one of those examples of something that you have no control over.

I consider it just a Fun Fact to Know and Tell, as well as an example of how quickly things can change. I am focusing on what I can control. ;-)

You haven't published yet, so it is unlikely that your current sales will be affected <joke>

I don't have a clue what Amazon did... no one does. If you let it keep you from writing, this probably isn't the path for you.

Anytime you have your eggs in one basket, you'll be at risk...

But these days, you can publish in multiple venues and in multiple formats. Yes, currently, Amazon is the 800 lb gorilla... but much good fiction has a long shelf life.

Don't worry about stuff that is out of your control

Sooo... write your fiction and get it published

1) Write well as well as you can, and work to improve with each book/story you tell. If you don't know what good fiction writing is, educate yourself.

2) Wherever possible, write in series.

3) Respect the genre that you are writing and its readers

4) Publish, in as many formats as appropriate. Use Select as long as it works for YOU

5) Place your story in as many venues as appropriate

6) Write the next story, making sure that it is better than the last...

Was it based on reviews perhaps?

Can you give us the link to the fiction forum where this was being discussed?

Only problem is that Amazon (just like Google) will never tell you what they did. So, even if you look at a million forums where it is being discussed, you will only be getting GUESSES as the what and why.

In the end you can't control what Amazon does and trying to figure out what their latest change was or why they did it so that you can update your plan accordingly is a recipe for disaster... just like trying to stay on top of the Google algorithm changes.

But what you can control is your customer experience - putting out great books and drawing readers in...creating a good customer experience by connecting with your readers/fans. Getting them on your fan page and email list and following you on Twitter.

You can own that and no Amazon changes or any other changes can take that away. So following Tink's suggestions above is the real recipe for long term success... not worrying about what Amazon or any other platform is doing with their algos.

I think that you are focusing on a microcosm, when you need to look at the larger picture.

I also think that panicking and trying to fix something immediately can cause more problems than waiting to see what happens over time... especially when we have no control over what Amazon is doing...

In many ways, fiction writing is the antithesis of much here in the *make money REALLY FAST online* mindset.

Write good fiction.

It takes time and there aren't any shortcuts. Even if you out source...

But it can result in a much longer income stream (think decades) than can be imagined here where you do fall into worrying about SEO and Google and the latest WordPress update and the newest, No-Fail WSO.

Permanent? Define permanent... it happened maybe 8 days ago!

I have no idea how many authors were affected...

It may very well be that some of them have bounced back.

With fiction, the idea is to think long term... not worry about what happened last week.

Can I tell you a little story?

When I was finishing high school, I wanted to be a writer. At that time, a few made it, most starved.

My parents - worried about the (possible lack of) quality - told me to talk with a guy they knew. He was a language teacher at university, or something like it. I can´t remember now, he was supposed to be an authority of sort.

I took my short stories, my poems, my dreams. He destroyed them. He rescued 2 or 3 short stories as just fine, one or two poems worth surviving. Pretty much told me to burn the rest.

Granted, I wrote my first poem at 9, some were a bit juvenile.

When I was leaving he gave me a book as a present, it was a book by Leon Felipe. And he told me something, that only later made sense. He read a letter from a writer to a young poet who had asked for advise, and that letter said (free version):

There is only one way to know if someone is a writer, that person cannot do anything but writing.

I used many different job descriptions in my life, but in all I did one thing: write creatively. When I was researching in physics I was being a writer, when I was working in a law firm I was using my writing skills, when I was translating between English, Spanish and Portuguese, I was being a writer. And later on... I moved around and ended up ghostwriting, to finally write my own stuff.

Is it good enough? Time will tell. But something is clear: no matter what, I write.

Where am I going with all this chit chat?

What I think Tink is telling you nicely is: if you care for a small shake and think it is worth changing this particular business model, maybe it is because you are not a writer. if you are not, make yourself and others a favor and do something else.

On the other hand... IF you are a writer. Don´t worry about anything but writing. The system is open now and talent finds its space under the sun.

I know those who started it, and they don´t follow their own advice, they follow their passions while keeping one foot on the Earth. This is why they are big.

Truth is: writing - like all arts - is first a passion, then a business.

Now, I encourage you to see my opening post, and how Tink brought up the subject that worried you enough to come and mud the thread. I do care about the maximizing reach, she does too.

But the bottom line is: those things are at the service of communicating something that we feel worth communicating (even if everyone else do not think the same way).

What you let transpire again and again, is that if this was not a foolproof method that would save you from google´s up an downs, it did not worth your time.

And if that is the case then it does not worth your time. You said it, not me. This will have ups and downs, like in anything else. You need to really want it to go after it any way.

In this case the main engine is the passion for writing. Can others go the same route with a different passion? A passion for money? Probably. I don´t think I would want to read their stuff. Would you?

Quality matters, but in my opinion, quality and good management of the language do not always go hand in hand.

The management of a language is a skill, and all skills can be learned. To actually have ideas to transmit, well, that is a different story.

You have a kind of circular way to talk, where when someone answer to one thing you turn around and move to a different thing grabbing just one part, instead of really trying to go deep and find a meeting of minds. So this is a typical example where the language is not being used for communication, but for miss-communication.

I do understand that you felt unjustified insulted and patronized, my reaction came because you were muddying the thread and I had it. Communication goes in many levels and you overcharged my antenna, what you were doing is physically painful for people like me. I do not expect you to understand even a lil of what I said, just had to say it.

Hi,

I can only tell you about my experience because I searched for stats but they aren't published (that I could tell).

I did a three day promotion for a cookbook (Friday/Sat/Sun). 10,000 copies were downloaded. I sold 200.

I just did a two day promotion for a children's book (Sat/Sun). 260 copies were downloaded. I sold 31.

I'd love to see if anyone on the WF did a weekday promotion and what the results were.

This is the lil book I have been bugging everyone about, small niche, woohoo stuff.

I have been pulling 1 or 2 sales a day steadily for over a month, and it is in the top 100 for paid books in its category... that small it is.

I prefer to do my promotions on the days leading up to the weekend. I get more sales after the promotion if I do a free promotion on a Thursday/Friday, as opposed to doing it on a Saturday/Sunday.

I've also had better luck lately with one day promos for some of my more popular books. I'll promote them for a day and they'll shoot to the top of their categories, netting me a bunch of sales over the course of the next week or so. The nice thing about only doing a one day promo is I can do it a couple times a month instead of only doing it once a month. I've been getting more sales using this method than I have doing the longer 2 or 3 day promotions.

However, do keep in mind that things change fast in Kindle Land.

This article gives excellent guidelines but the numbers are dating back pretty far. Select today is very different from Select last Spring. ;-)

As a fiction author, my plan is to keep my head down and keep cranking out good books -- in series. LOL

I've had mixed success with different days. I've had Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun promotions fall flat on their faces, when a Wed/Thu worked great. And vice versa. I think it depends on too many factors to really analyze. Unless you plan it with a specific holiday, for example, I think any time is the right time

. One thing I do think has helped me is the 2-day vs. 1-day promotions. Seems like I get a better boost from 2 days, but then again that might just be luck of the draw.

22,000? Didn't that pretty well kill the market for your book? How were you able to make money from your giveaway?

I understand you may not wish to reveal your niche, but I would be interested in knowing generally what it is and the word count of your book. PM me if you wish. I have been doing Kindle since he beginning and I never heard of 22,000 downloads in 2 days, so naturally I'm curious.

I'm sorry, but I don't know that a snarky reply benefits anyone... If you didn't mean to be snarky, I apologize for jumping to conclusions, however I do find that references to My Little Pony among adults are rarely polite and cordial.

There are those of us who are willing to take the time and effort to help others, but that doesn't in any way obligate us to give information we would prefer not to share...

Ha! I thought your reply to me was rather snarky. At least in my reply I added a smiley face to let you know I was kidding. It is tragic that you and others took it so seriously.

A polite, "I'd prefer not to share" or no reply at all would have would have been better. As you know from my post I didn't expect you to reveal your deepest secrets. But I thought you might say something useful.

By the way, your comment about "thank yous" was snarky too. See my stats for confirmation that I often thank people when they offer something useful.

I set it up for next Tuesday 29, and Wednesday 30. Lets see how it goes.

About the promotion...

I updated the squidoo lenses with the dates of the free download.
Will email, probably closer to the date.
Changed the banner in the place I have banner advertising.

Still need to use the contacts of author marketing club, and will try amazon central blog with a lil comment.

Anything else I can do?

If you haven't already, make sure you have your own author blog and that you have an About The Author page in your book with links to that blog as well as social media etc. If I were you, I would also have an email optin form that you direct them to in order to get maximum potential benefit from all the freebie downloads.

Thanks! I will see how I make it work. This book is from and for a community. Thing is, most of the members already read the older version, so...

And there is a site. It has advertising of the book, some others I released in pdf, plus a store.

I did add an about page inside the kindle book, linking to the community and the site.

Twitter is setup, not too big, about 300 followers. It is a year old account, maybe two. I use it mainly for the feed.

I´m not big at blogging. Maybe it is time to revamp another one I have.

I started out by doing the pick and choose method of running one day free promotions. The results were decent but after awhile I wondered if I was missing the boat and altered my strategy by doing two and three day promo runs. The numbers were much better. My experimentation with days of the week has led me to primarily focus on Monday to Wednesday.

All that being said, this is what I think at this moment in time is right for me. Fiction or non-fiction, target demographics, subject matter, and a whole host of other factors probably play into it that makes each author's situation somewhat unique.

KDP Select is still working for me. It's not near what it was like at the tail end of 2011 or even the beginning of 2012, but it still works well enough that I'll continue to have 20+ titles on auto renew... for the time being, until it stops working for me.

Take in all the info and recommendations that you can find but in the end you need to find what works for you.

But, as TinkBD said... it's time now to get back to writing and WF posts don't count.

I've found weds-thurs to be best for me. Two day promos seem to be working best right now too.

But what Tink says is true. It's an ever changing landscape. And the free promo thing can be a crapshoot. I put one book on a free promo in October and only got a couple hundred downloads, tried it again in December and got 16,000 and I didn't even promote the promo!

I think the real answer is… there is no real answer. There are too many variables to be able to come up with a formula.

I've had the best results doing 4 free days promotion from Thursday evening to Sunday night and then I save my last day for another weekend normally.

I find you can get a lot of traction if you use consecutive days and my best results have been around the weekend.

Right after Christmas is the best time as a lot of people have bought kindles from amazon. They are then busy loading them up. Then there is a big pause. Readers are busy viewing all the content they stored up. I will let you in on a secret as a lot of xmas shoppers buy kindles and fill them up with FREE e-books, but never find the time to read even one. Sounds strange, but so it is.

I've seen my sales numbers increase around 30% after switching my promotion style to the following.

Free promotion every seven days instead of a straight seven-day period.

I'd like to know if this works out for anyone else of if it's just a coincidence.
