Tracking Traffic from specific sources

Often if you sent to an email list or paid to have your link included in an email, or maybe purchased a banner, you can't always count on Google analytics to give you the full story. I highly recommend URL shorteners. You can use different services for different instances of the same link (bit.ly and goo.gl). What is great is the anchor text rank is passed as they all use permanent redirects and Matt Cutts confirmed this.

I just now posted on a website that does not pass the referrer, but it doesn't matter, I'm watching the clicks accumulate right now.

Oh, and this is also a great way to prove you sent traffic out too! I have one person that got 500 clicks on an article I wrote last week and am about to ask them if they want to place an ad with us. So much easier when I can take a screenshot of the stats from the shortener.
