Tracking Traffic from specific sources

Often if you sent to an email list or paid to have your link included in an email, or maybe purchased a banner, you can't always count on Google analytics to give you the full story. I highly recommend URL shorteners. You can use different services for different instances of the same link ( and What is great is the anchor text rank is passed as they all use permanent redirects and Matt Cutts confirmed this.

I just now posted on a website that does not pass the referrer, but it doesn't matter, I'm watching the clicks accumulate right now.

Oh, and this is also a great way to prove you sent traffic out too! I have one person that got 500 clicks on an article I wrote last week and am about to ask them if they want to place an ad with us. So much easier when I can take a screenshot of the stats from the shortener.
