Using List to Promote iPhone App?

I'm currently having an iOS game get developer at a pretty hefty price. This is the first time I market an iOS application and would be an awful load if it doesn't become a success. Anyways, my question is, has anyone used an email list to promote an app? I could personally easily build a list of 20K emails although I really have little to no idea how to market them.

Has anyone done it in the past? I forgot to mention, the 20K emails would be targetted iPhone users. Any input would help!

You really can't tell if your subscribers have an iOS device.

If you can build a list for a low cost I say go for it, but there are many other ways to market apps on mobile advertising networks such as AdMob (googles Ad Network for Mobile Devices) which I hear some people are successful with.

Thanks for the response. Getting the subscribers isn't exactly my issue, rather, actually marketing the product to them via email.

WHy don't you submit a MVP version of your app to some members of your list and get their feedback? MVP meaning minimum viable product.

If I was creating an app and needed to come up with a way to advertise it I would look at it like this:

What are some of the most visited websites on the internet?

From this information I would develop my attack plan. Starting with youtube, not a day goes past where I dont visit the site, and it's the same for almost everyone. Youtube is very addictive.

Now on youtube there's a number of partners that own channels specifically for reviewing apps, contact a few of these channels and get them to review it for you, they have thousands of subscribers so you would get a lot of publicity from that alone.

Facebook and Twitter don't even really need an explanation, make pages, accounts dedicated to the app and just promote it like crazy. There's a number of promotion methods that you can find here in WSO's or just a simple search.

Promotion of apps via list is not particularly effective, we've tested extensively. It just doesn't work

People have to be in "apps-mood" to download more apps with "click-compliance" attitude

Conversion goes through floor when they are "out-of-apps" mood

PM me to discuss more on our findings on promoting apps

We've made over 1000+ apps, so we know what we're talking about

      Regards
