I guest posted a really nice article on a PR4 blog, Can I still use that article on my own blog?

Hey guys, I wrote some really solid content for another blog. Probably my best article to date - maybe because I knew it had to be really good for a guest post? But regardless, can I post this same article on my own blog..or will that mess me up with google and their whole thing against duplicate content. I mean it is 100% my content, just submitted to another site. Should I change the words then put it on my own blog? Any advice would be great, Thanks

In my opinion, you should produce only original content on your site. The article that you posted on the other blog has probably been indexed by the search engines.

You should have put a link back to your site from that article. Also, Duplicate content only applies to content on your own site, not different sites. If I were you, I would simply write a similar, but unique article and post it to your site.

Yep...you should have posted the article on your own blog first, and when it was indexed then you provide it to others

Using it as is not. If you took the theme and rewrote the whole blog yes.

      Hey Tim,

If you guest posted on some one's blog, I believe they let you do it because they wanted original quality content from you and they probably valued your writing.

I think if you would use the same content on your site you would lose credibility.

As well, in your guest post you probably included a link to your site. I, as a reader would not think of you very highly if I clicked on your link in the guest post and found the same article somewhere on your site.

I would also be ticked off if I, the owner of a blog who let you guest post on my blog, found your guest post also on your blog. I would immediately delete your guest post from my blog. If I would want to post duplicate content on my site I could just go and find one and copy it my site.

I think you are playing with fire thinking that way

If you care about SEO (I don't) put it on your own site first,
so that it is indexed on your site first.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with posting it everywhere
else that you want to... If someone gets upset and thinks
that it is "duplicate content", you can:

    1. Patiently try to explain to them there is no such thing, or
    2. Leave them to their ignorance and go on to the next publisher.

(I am not in the business of trying to educate stubborn publishers,
so I opt for #2 by default)

Why not write a short blog post drawing attention to the guest post published on the PR4 blog? If you're worried about duplicate content, don't include an extract.

Good idea, just that the link juice is flowing out of our blog, instead of trying to get the PR4 link juice into our blog.

    Two different issues at play.

First, legally, what was your agreement in guest blogging so the website would show your article? You are the copyright owner and can do whatever you want, including posting a copy on your website - unless you have an agreement not to do that. Or maybe you transferred copyright per an agreement? If so, you are not in a position to put a copy, or even a rewritten version, on your website.

If there is no agreement, by default you can likely do with your article what you want.

Second, practical issues. Will the owner of the website care? Does he have a concern about duplicate content? Will it prevent you from guest blogging again.

The practical issues others have raised are likely the most important matters to consider so you can continue to benefit from guest writing.

kindsvater brings up a great point-- If you transferred copyright,
then you don't own the rights to it anymore.

On the other hand, if you did not, then just post the full article
on your site. It is your article, after all, and who cares if he
gets upset? There are far too many publishers out there for you
to choose from, if he believes the "duplicate content" myth
    then just move on.

At most, if I'm working with a publisher that I really like, I'll
sell them "First Publish" rights, usually giving them 30 or 90 days
before I publish the article anywhere else. But even that is rare.
