What's the typical open rate for email newsletters?

I have a list of about 340 people and sent out my first email newsletter. I sent it yesterday and so far I've gotten just over 36% open rate. I'm sure more will be open in the next few days, but what's the typical open rate for newsletters?

I also got two personal emails from the list responding to a question that I posted in it. I think that's not bad for the first email, but I'm not sure.

    That's a great result mate. You obviously have very targeted sign-ups and give them what they want. Really anything above 30% is a great result! Well done! The question that remains though is - will it last?

    Obviously developing your relationship is the next part...

    What you provide from now on is the real test. If you can maintain a 30% open rate then you're close to nailing it...

    36% opening rate is consider not bad...carry on building relationship with them and im sure the % will increase

    I would have to agree, that is a very good rate.

    If you can get open rates like that you are probably providing good quality content and you have loyal customers!

    It also depends what your subject headline is to... you always want an eye grabbing subject line to grab your readers attention to get them to open the email.

    What was your subject headline if you don't mind me asking? and what is your niche?

      Thanks. Those are the answers that I was hoping to hear.

      I have a digital scrapbooking site where I created a bunch of video tutorials that I uploaded to youtube and also put on my site. I abandoned it for a while because of other projects that I've was working on, but for about a year, the site has been slowly building a list on it's own. Usually a few people per week.

      I'm ready to jump back into the site start making some money with it, so I decided to send out my first email newsletter to the 300+ people I have on my list. Immediately people started opening it and as of now I have an open rate of 36.61%.

      The email newsletter subject line simply said : The Scrapping Guy Newsletter - Fun with Digital Scrapbooking

      I only had two things I talked about in the newsletter. I answered a simple question of how to print out the digital scrapbook pages they create and I give a source of where to get actual books made. And the second thing was that I asked for suggestions for future tutorial videos that they'd like me to create.

      I didn't try to sell anything.

      I did get two email replies, both thanking me for the site and the tutorials that are on it. And one of the two asking me to create a tutorial video for a specific design.

      So yes, it's a very niche audience and I do plan on giving quality information in future newsletters. I also want to start taking a more proactive approach to building my list. I'm not sure what that's gonna be yet, but it's something I want to do.

      And BTW, most of my traffic comes from Youtube....which makes sense since my site is basically video tutorials.

    36% is good

    IF yo utrat your audience right you can get much higher open rates, I usually experience anywhere from 30-70% open rates. Even with old lists.
