You need to get a merchant account and a payment gateway in order to accept credit card payments on your site.

Google merchant account, they cost around $350 per year + 3% of each sale. You can set them up through companies / banks you can find them on google.

I suggest 2checkout.com . They are in business for quite some time. They are reliable and accept all of the major credit cards. Plus most of those customers who regularly buy online are familiar with them, so their would be less difficulty in filling out their forms.

Paypal or Moneybookers are also good choices if you are just starting out. A merchant account is better however if your monthly income reaches 10000 dollars.

    Hope that helps!

    Best Wishes,
    Allanon

You can try Share-It! Visit www.shareit.com
Register an account with them. They are a shopping cart, payment gateway and product delivery system all rolled into one. (Note: I am not an affiliate or employee of Share-It, I am a customer). You can then accept all kinds of cards, wire payments and even checks. They will process everything and best of all there is no setup fee, so no upfront costs at all! The charges vary depending on the price of your product and the volume of sales, you can choose the plan that you are comfortable with. You can design your order form on their site and generate links which you then paste as "Buy Now" or "Add to Cart" buttons on your website. That's it. At the end of the month you will get a statement of sales and payment will be wired into your account by 15th of the next month.
Hope you find this info useful

Think there;s some good suggestions there, as paypal has it's problems as we've all heard, so either try shareit.com or 2checkout.com, note both services probably charge a little bit more comission on each transaction however you are getting to use there service.

My Ex worked in banking in Ireland and told me that getting merchant accounts here was difficult, ie you need certain levels of turnover, years in business etc.

Best of luck with the new endeavour

Wow thank you for all the responses. I like paypal, but just not on my website. Im goin to do some research on 2checkout right now. Income from the website is steady but not huge. So I think 2checkout will work great. Thank you, I will get back to you guys.

Paypal is the best I have ever used, unless you have like a spare $3000+ for your own system, Paypal only takes out 2.7 cents in a dollar so really it is nothing and can be set up instantly!

Yep I like paypal too, but who cares what you or I like. Its what your customers use. Not everyone has a paypal account or could be bothered setting one up!

I can't believe that some people still don't know that you can pay through Paypal without joining up! I've used Paypal for years, and I have a merchant account, and if it were up to me I'd use Paypal for everything. Even their rates are excellent.

BUT... as someone so rightly pointed out, it's what your customer wants that counts. And not everyone likes Paypal. Also, if you are in an area that is not popular with Paypal you are no doubt losing sales. Keep Paypal as an option but add your own system.

You mention that you have a B of A account, which means that you or your business must have a U.S. presence whether you live there or not. This is a big advantage getting a merchant account.

If you haven't been approved for a merchant account yet I recommend First Data. They have a high acceptance rate and also offer the Linkpoint payment gateway. This means you won't need authorize.net or 2checkout, both of which are far from perfect.

Implementing all of this can still be confusing so do a lot of research while you're waiting for your mechant account to be approved and set up.
