New to marketing, willing to work at it, any advice?

Hello, I am brand new to the forum. I have wanted to start a business for myself over the past couple years and every time I search online I'm overwhelmed with scams and snags. I finally decided on an affiliate site based on dog safety. It seems like a descent market and I am indeed passionate and involved with the topic. I'm more than willing to put forth the time and effort, and am quite capable of writing content and/or articles myself. I thought before I invest my time I would ask the advice of experienced people first, to help me get started on the right track. I'd like to build my site the right way, I chose word press to start with, having never built a site before. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. I currently work as an independent contractor, which is edifying the title of construction worker, and I just don't want to be stuck forever with someone over my shoulder telling me how they want things done. My income is good though, and I have some extra to invest in starting this business as well. I owned a painting business before, but I think it's time to get out of the physical field and do something different. Thanks!

I wouldnt just focus on dog safety. Rather build an authorative website about dogs in general and do the following:

    1. Write about all topics relating to dogs - safety, training, pictures, toys etc. Become a Dog expert. Don't focus on the money you want to make. Just focus on great content.

    2. Build a list from your website.

    3. Build a relationship with the list.

    4. Sell them your own products and affilaite products.

You can make a niche site very narrow, which can bring in highly targeted traffic, just make sure that there is enough traffic in that narrow niche to get you to your financial goal. Agree with Sarlat about focusing on great content, exchange of value is the key to creating wealth.

If you have a lot of experience in your field, start off by creating an eBook, it's the fastest way to get your information out there.

Good job on steering away from the 9-5 and the uncapped realm of entrepreneurship! Good Luck!

Thanks, and I agree and intend to include as much info as possible from general health to training. As far as building a list, is this absolutely necessary to create a good following?

The best suggestion is to look for things that teach you about marketing not about "how to make money" Big difference. Learn how to persuade people, build relationships with people and enjoy both your successes and failures. They will both teach you something and add to your forward momentum.

It may be an old cliche, but my biggest bit of advice would be to just do it and don't be afraid to fail.

It took me a while to earn money when i first started my business, and i would often worry that i was going to fail - so i wouldn't put in the effort required to succeed.
It is only when we fail that we truly learn. So get learning asap and within a few months you will not believe how far you have come.

    Good Luck

Thanks, I had just read this too, anyone else care to comment on the challenge? Whats up with the challenge, I don't want to stray too far off considering that I already have a site to begin adding to - ?

You should build an authority site. - this is the short answer to your questions.

Here is a great training about how to do it:
    http://howtobuildauthoritysites.com/

I am not the product creator. I am not an affiliate of this training. I am only a buyer, who purchased it (by they way I have already purchased several things from this person because I trust him as I have already read plenty of materials related to internet/online marketing and I know that his stuff is the real deal).

Obviously, as you do not know me you have no reason to trust me on this one. I just want to save you some time, cut your learning curve so to speak. It is up to you whether you purchase it or not.

    Hi there,
If you say you are passionate about a topic, then by all means get going and "crush your competition"! Not being nasty here but just saying that you need to stand out from the crowd!

You say you're not afraid of working hard and that's good! My own experience has taught me something! "Planning is good, but doing is better"! Get started asap and if there is a little hurdle, it doesn't matter, leave it for later!

As far as wordpress is concerned, I am the biggest technophobiac on earth and yet, I can do it! I suggest you set up the blog and do ONE TASK a day like adding plug-ins or things like that!

Google best plug ins for wordpress 2013, you'll get youtube videos and good info! You can hire someone to speed things up. Visit the hire section here!

The most important thing is to do is write and update content several days a week! Drive traffic with articles, videos, social media, anything! Forum commenting is good too!

Anyway, it takes a while and you can also diversify! I am currently doing 3 different things and it's a case of dividing it into bits!

    Good luck with everything!

    Yoan
