What good is a list without a product to sell?

I am an elite marathoner and have a website for runners. I am building a mailing list and am working on two projects for runners trying to break the 4 hour marathon and 2 hour half marathon.

The problem I am having is outside of writing short messages from time to time to my mailing list about running and blog broadcasts when I write a new post how is there 'money in my list' when it comes to distance runners?

I could REALLY use some expert advice on this. Thanks folks.

Nathan

Ever thought to promote gear or training tools via amazon? Maybe there are fitness books related to your topic for you to promote if not create one. Ebooks are very simple to create and if you know what your reader enjoy then you could cater to them in a way that we give you great conversions.

I would definitively follow that advice. Use amazon to sell products that are geared toward your niche. You can do a weekly or a biweekly newsletter that has tips to getting better and then end it off with product of the week offering..

That is what I do with my outdoor website, it is a harder sell, but you have to keep it consistent.

      Hope that helps.

If it is me personally, I will try to promote clickbank products that are related to healthy diets or even losing weight. Some warriors here has even suggested promoting Amazon products which you can try too. You can even consider solo ads to advertisers. All the best

i think that amazon is probably going to be your best friend here. There's a lot of different physical products you could be selling with that option. For example, you don't want to start bashing away sell sell sell every email, but if you find some brand of something helpful to you, you can write a nice recommendation and review of it. that's a place to start

Hi, I'm glad to see you're list building.

Think of it like this. What are the needs of your niche, what excites them, what do they all spark up on when that conversation comes around.

There are so many companies out there that want to sell more products that you should not have a challenge finding what you need.

Find books like "Running through Barier" (I just made that title up) and call the distributor and ask if they drop ship or have a drop shipper. Why settle for Amazons 6-8% commission when you can get 50%.

Interview on video a top runner for all their tips suggestions etc.. Sell the video downloadable online. You might say, no top guy will give his secrets. Ok, interview a guy everyone knows and likes that's just retired for his secrets.

IMHO don't ask what can I sell them ask what are they buzzing about and or need.

But either way, keep on list building.

you have to also think about what is related to your niche too

clothing - all runners need decent trainers and clothing and extra safety clothing is they run on the roads

healthy eating - if they are a serious runner then they will be eating healthy so cook books and recipe books is a good one

fitness equipment - they may need this to do excercise at home

a good tip is if you want to see what other sites runners visit go to Home | Quantcast and type in one of the biggest running websites online and then look to see what sites they visit after they leave and before they get there

this is a good strategy to use to get lots more data and info on your niche and where they hang out

As others have said, Try promoting affiliate products to your list (things related to running that your list would be interested in reading about). Also mix that in with valuable FREE content and you have a recipe for success.

Did you say that you were working on some information products
on how to break the 2 and 4 hour marathon?

It seems if that's the kind of thing you're talking about in your
emails then that's the kind of product you could sell.

Why are people signing up to your list now...what is the
        incentive?

Also what are they buying and paying for in this niche?

        What's important to them?

If they pay for trainers or coaches then they should also
pay for information products and coaching by phone/email
        etc.

You'll usually make a whole lot more money if you have an
        information product funnel...

    Hi Nathan,

You will realize that income later on if you want to create paid reports or ebook about distance running. It will be easy for you to offer to them these products because they know you can offer value for them. Hope this helps.

Forget Amazon If your actually an elite marathoner, sell your own knowledge/skills, be a trainer.

You can start out with affiliate offers but make sure you check the products out before you send them to your list. Then start creating your own products to send to your list..

It's a whole lot better (and much more easily fixed) than having a product to sell without a list, in which position so many more people unfortunately find themselves, some of them not even appreciating the extent of their problem.

    Are you a runner yourself?

The obvious question would be, why not just make an info product - and angle your messages so that each one talks about the product you made.

That, or find some bodyfat scanner or something on amazon.com that sells for 300 bucks and keep talking about its virtues.
