Ripping Off Other Peoples Lists - Caught a Guy Red Handed!!!

Hey Warriors,

I'm still learning valuable and ethical stuff from you guys but I have something to share with you. I just chatted to a guy on skype as I'm looking for a header for my site. I didn't take up his offer as the headers were poor quality so before I ended the call, I asked him how he was making money online as I was struggling to make any.

To my shock and horror, this was his exact response:
''Well, I advertise my services on my website helping people to install an opt in form, write email series for auto responders.....they give me the login details, then I steal their email lists from their campaigns and promote my own niche related offers. I have accumulated 1000 make money guy's emails by doing this ''

At this point I was speechless and asked him that this was not ethical and how he could sleep at night but he showed no remorse. It's shocking that he can do this to innocent people as it must have taken years to build that list. I would never order anything from him.

So my question is wouldn't his clients know that he is stealing their lists?
How could he market to them if they are not subscribed to him?
What are your views on his selfish attitude and no respect for innocent people?

Thanks

I'd like to know where these people got their lists from in the first place. Obviously not from building a list from an opt in form since he's the one setting it up. But yes, there's a lot of sleaze out there, not just in the marketing world mind you.

      Hi Retsced,

I agree with you buddy about a lot of sleaze out there and God knows how they sleep at night. The way he gets the lists is when his clients buy his service, they give him access to their auto reponders as he needs that info to install the opt in form. So he makes whatever he charges for his services but basically rips them off by stealing their lists.

IM is a dog eat dog world, don't you know that? Nothing shocking about this as there are thousands of blackhat IM people lurking around who use ANY means possible to get ahead. It's just the way it has been and how it will continue to be.

Anyone who has the remotest clue about business would not give access to their client / prospect base.

With that said, people will make mistakes and his ploy takes advantage of that.

That's a good point Daniel. Maybe clients don't realize the dangers of handing out logging details for their auto responders, especially if they are for example not in the IM field and marketing something outside of IM. Good business people would realize the risks involved.

"Faintest clue" about business has nothing to do with it. I have techs. I also almost flatline when you talk technology to me. If you don't know it and don't have time to learn it, you have to hire, or barter, outsource. You have to be careful, for sure - very freaking careful. You also have to always know you can get into your website and lock anyone else out if you have to, too. That's all you have to know about that. It's unrealistic to think you can do EVERYTHING you need done in a business on your own. Sometimes you have to be able to trust an associate and pay to have things done FOR you. It's called........um...........business.

This is true. I don't normally give out my passwords, but I'm on the other end of that. I have installed sites for hundreds of people and have gotten their cpanel logins to get it done. I do it all the time. Many of them probably don't even change their passwords after I'm done. It's safe with me, and you need to find people that you trust to outsource stuff to, but in the wrong hands, things like what the OP is talking about can and do happen.

It's not as rare as you think.

I know of at least one autoresponder company that does this.

I do see your point, but the Forum's rules don't allow that; sorry.

To generalize a little, I think the reality is that one can avoid many different "autoresponder problems" by staying well away from "free autoresponders": http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7096755

This is why you need to know how to install/set up your own stuff. Down the road you can hire the right people or your own staff to do this.

        Hey Jill,

As soon as I heard that guy confess, I learned how to install an auto responder and create a web form, copy and paste the code and then add it on to a site thanks to youtube. This way, once I'm up and running, I don't want to outsource that part of my business to anyone, unless they are well known and trusted.

Its possible to find good help where you can learn to trust them, but it usually begins with some good interviewing skills, still there are tons of people selling their email lists which is just about as bad as stealing, not quite but almost.

Let's not generalize too much, here? Some lists openly advertised for sale have been built from opt-ins with which people have given permission (at the time they opted in) for their details to be passed on to others with offers/recommendations which might interest them.

Indeed, some (including some "business opportunity seeker lists") have signed up specifically for that purpose.

It doesn't necessarily follow at all that companies "selling lists" are doing anything wrong. What this thread is discussing - in contrast - clearly is a form of theft.

That certainly isn't cool. I'm amazed he would even admit to doing that.

I'd be livid if someone did that to me. I work hard every day to build my lists and maintain relationships with my subscribers.

I'm always sketchy about skype. Spammers and thugs seem very comfortable there. I only use it to communicate with people I already trust.

It's pretty easy to install an opt in form on a site. However, not that easy to write good email copy. He probably outsources that to a gig on fiverr. It's best to learn how to do certain things yourself or take time to find more trustworthy outsourcers.

This guy obviously has no shame about what he's doing and doesn't think he's going to get caught.

Hey Fun to Write, your absolutely right but non IM don't realize that lists can be stolen so they are easy victims for these crooks.

I like your point about 'Karma' catching up with those crooks. They might gain temporarily by stealing lists but they'll pay a higher price later on one way or the other.

Bullshit. Dishonesty might be common on the 'anonymous' internet, but your blanket accusation is utter nonsense. If you and all of your associates are dishonest and unethical, that's your problem, but don't try and tar everyone else with the same brush.

I was shocked (still am) at how many people check their ethics and morals at the door when they get online to do business.

Giving someone you don't know your log-in details and then not changing them when the job is done is just asking for trouble.

Once the person you hired to install something on your site has finished, change your passwords. In this case, change your autoresponder company password as well as your ftp and log-in passwords.

You know there are many marketers who are going to try whatever free ones they find for their own need or reasons. I would suggest they learn their lesson early by backing up their list to their own records and adding in friends and family with a new email address specifically to help out and forward back all emails sent to them at that new email address for a couple months or so just to see exactly how it's working out. If strange people are emailing, the email ends up in the spam catcher, and exactly what the email looks like when it is sent.

I'm not familiar with snail mail marketing now, but it used to be that supposedly targeted prospect lists were sold with a one-time use and on those lists were people who would report directly to the list owner if they received more than one mailing.

A bit off the wall and off topic, but sometimes I've wished that spamming snail mailers sending garbage mail by the ton to every address in the city could be reported somewhere, especially the bank credit card and other companies that have your name, address and an account number already filled in for you to sign and return. That kind of thing keeps my paper shredder busy.
