Are These Freelancing Listings A Lie?

I've done some freelancing in the past, and I would always see gigs offering to pay people to type text from a PDF file into a word processor and email them the file. These offers always seemed shady to me, but I can't figure out what they'd possibly have to gain from posting dubious gigs.

If anyone who's worked on sites like Freelancer, Odesk, or Elance has an opinion on this, I'd appreciate it. I need to know if any of these types of listings can be trusted, but I suspect they can't. Thanks.

Why don't you try Fiverr, Gigbucks and SEOClerks etc sites for freelancing. And the ads you are talking about are really fake.. They are just to attract more people there.

Sites like fiverr are basically worthless for anybody in an economy like the U.S., where $5 (really, $4) barely buys a meal. Most gigs take a long time to complete, and therefore shouldn't be seen as more than a fun way for younger people to earn a little bit of extra money in my opinion.

Thanks for letting me know about the fake listings though. It makes sense that freelancing sites would do that in order to make it look like there's more opportunities on the site, but it's awful that they're lying to everyone if that's the case. It's a waste of people's time, not to mention the fact that some people are actually paying money to make their bids get noticed. So really, that's completely wrong for them to do.

How do you know those particular listings are fake? There are tons of them, from different people. And Freelancer surely doesn't need to insert fake ads to attract more people.

I'm also curious to know the story behind those ads, Nathan.

I would think there are ads for this type of service, but yes; curious what the story is here.

I wouldn't assume that they are fake. Sounds like people wanting the content of the pdfs that don't have permissions to the pdf. Just a guess.

That could also be it. Interesting.
