eBay question regarding phones

Hi warriors, I'm not sure if this is the right subforum for this but if anyone can shed some light on this it would be well appreciated.

I recently put a sign up in my main storefront/office space where I buy people's broken and used iPhones and whatnot. More or less to get people in the door (word of mouth is a huge part of my local marketing strategy, this town is mostly small business owners).

Anyway, I've been just selling them on eBay for a modest profit, maybe a few hundred bucks a week nothing really all that impressive, but I ran into a problem.

When I have a "for parts or not working" it'll get hundreds of views per day, but if I have a regular working phone it'll get like 30 views over a week, what's with that? Is there any way to drive more traffic to the working phones?

Thanks,
Paul

  • Dragonfire,

I’m not hugely active on eBay or with selling cell phones but I would venture a guess that you get more views because it may be cheaper to buy a broken phone and then have it fixed rather than pay a higher price for the working one.

Have you tried any of eBay’s premium advertising? Or perhaps just enhancing the listings for the working phones so that they get more exposure than the “for parts” models that don’t really need much help to sell?

Classified pages on eBay might work,

Advertising with classified ads on eBay and eBay Classifieds

You could also try free listings like on craigslist or something to get a little more traffic.

    Hope that helps,

      Hi Paul,

Looks like a lot of people are fixing up phones and reselling them!

One thing you can do is link to your other listings from within your higher-traffic listings.

This form of cross-selling is within eBay guidelines because you are not linking outside of eBay, you are only linking to your other listings.

I did a video recently about how to do this - it's super simple to do, but can be very powerful when you have a lot of similar items up on eBay.

(So, if someone is checking out your "for parts" phones, they may click over and check out your "complete" phones)

  • For eBay, your main tool for driving traffic is your TITLE. So, for your title, you need to make sure you're doing some specific things:

1, Make sure you're using all, or nearly all 80 characters.
2, Don't use any adjectives not associated with the item itself (like 'AWESOME' iphone!)
3, Don't use any punctuation at all
3, Make sure that you use NO stop words at all.

For help in making great titles that generate a LOT of traffic, use this tool:

    Hope this helps!

How many people do you know that have at one time dropped their phone and cracked a screen or the case or need a new battery, whatever.

Most phones today are made to be broken and that's where phone companies make a lot of extra money.

It only makes sense that there would be a large market for people looking to buy a part or two to replace on their phone. Much cheaper than replacing their phone altogether.

As for getting more traffic to your new phones, I know it might sound simple, but in your broken phones ads do you have links saying something like, "We also sell brand new iphones, click here for the best price."

In regards to why you are getting more traffic:

    1. There would be much less people listing parts phones thus you get a greater share of the market.

    2. Your listings would still probably have the phone model in them and when a lot of people search to buy phones, they sort them on order from lowest price to highest. Thus your listings would be lower in price than the new phone listings and would get more clicks.
