Writing content for my (affiliate) site, what is next to really get started?

I'm still writing content for my potential "authority" site, but this will be an ongoing effort over time. My site is brand new and it's my first shot at affiliate marketing. I am intending to market multiple products with links included in my info pages, not limiting myself to one product. What do I really do next?? Do I apply to affiliate programs and begin adding links? It wouldn't make sense to promote my site before my promotions on the site are in place - right? Do I have to submit my site to search engines? I have some keywords picked and I can write good articles myself, any seo tips? Any advice at all is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!!!

    Get some good content up first and then go out and start backlinking and gain search engine ranking before you start adding affiliate links. You want your site to come across as authority and not the typical affiliate site, when search engines come through. Linking to other high page rank authority sites might be a good way to establish yourself as an authority as you are deferring to credible sources.

    In today's world, content is king. Focus all your time on getting your content 80% before you bother spending (much) time working on any other aspect.

    There really isn't any point adding affiliate offers, or any other offers for that matter, until you have enough visitors to increase the odds someone will buy. Trying to monetize your site too early will only alienate those who visit and decide you have nothing there but ads.

    thanks everyone, writing content through the weekend it is. I'll be back later for some more tips. I definitely don't want to come off like a typical affiliate site, I've been coming across some that are pretty lame, with no real content at all. I'll do my best to write better material myself. I'm also wondering if it will be better to buy a wordpress theme for a more pro look. I've seen a lot of basic ones out there so far.

      Do you really believe that writing content is going to bring traffic to your website? If you you are serious about making any money from this adventure you want to embark on, I would forget 90% of the stuff you have been told on this thread and do every thing to attract traffic to your site, whatever the platform of the website.

      There are many sites with terrible content and good sales figures and millions and millions of sites with "content of the highest quality" that are not converting. Choose a platform, WordPress, html whatever you want and start attracting traffic, get some seo done and rank on the search engines.

        I'd say closer to 100%, myself.

        If you want to make money through affiliate sales, you need to build a list. You need an autoresponder, and your website needs to be designed around its fundamental purpose of encouraging the visitors to opt in. There's little point in attracting traffic without the opt-in and listbuilding processes set up first. So that's perhaps what you need to concentrate on at the moment?

        There are a few hundred threads in this forum with titles like "What's The One Thing You'd Do Differently If You Were Starting Again Tomorrow?". Take a look through a small sample of them, and you'll find that one of the things they all have in common is that they're full of replies from long-established, successful Warriors almost all of whom give the same answer: the thing they'd do differently, with what they know now but didn't know when they started, is "start to build a list on day 1". There are reasons for that.

    I would focus on writing up some high quality content for your website but I would also focus on doing a little SEO work to get your site ranking in the search engines. Do some blog commenting, forum marketing, article marketing, etc.

    Take a look at the design/layout of my site for examples.

    In the past month I've made three sales on clickbank, another 4 on random affiliate offers, etc.

    And that was all in the first month of the site being online, its really simple to make serious money from affiliate, marketing.... just do it the right way.

    You should first focus on writing content of the products that you will to promote.

    Next is the marketing of your website.

    There are plenty of ways to market your website..just do a search on this forum

    If your site is Amazon related, then don't do any backlinking, focus on the content. Choose a niche (gardening, kitchen, etc.), then start posting reviews, one per day. The best if your average review has more than 1000 words. From time to time, you can write shorter reviews (3-400 words) as well. After 3 months, you'll have 90 superb reviews, and you'll get organic traffic without building any backlink.

    Focus on knowing your audience and competitors first. Competition research is the key. Figure out their content strategy. Build your content based on avoiding your competition's mistakes and building on their strong points.

    I add affiliate links as I publish content from day one. I don't put affiliate links on every page/post.

    Focus on good content.

    Also start list building from day one ... use your content and an incentivized offer to entice people to join you e-mail list.

    Create the site in your niche as the site you would want to visit. This is my mantra.

    Create a traffic strategy.

    Building your list from the very first day really is one of the most important things you can do for your long term success. Doing this will allow you to not have to worry about silly Google updates and such.

    Content is king. Keep doing that. Traffic is for not without it. I can't I agree, even a little bit, with a couple of the posters on this thread. You have nothing without quality content.

    Alexa's advice is the best so far, as usual. You need to have your own source for free, on-demand traffic that trusts you. That is what an opt-in form is for. Get good content on your site and enxourage people to opt-in.

    Use your list to inform subscribers of new content. Also include promotional sequences that describe how to make the most of the offers you're promoting.

    If you are not building a list, you will never get past the tip of the iceburg.
