Help with punk rock niche.

Hello I have been a punk rock worker for ten years. I recently moved my paper zine to an e-zine with a web site. Then I found out about affiliate marketing. My website gets between 80 and 120 visitors a day. I have tried marketing e-cigs, loans and grants but the company I am going through is sketchy and I want to leave them. Their banners lead to blank pages often. I found a CB offer for "How to be a concert promoter" and will push this in my next e-zine.

Any ideas on how to build my punk/underground movie, music and magic e-zine list would be great. Also products I could promote. I am a newbie and don't know if I am allowed to post my web address here.

I would like to start making money online because I am going to convert my used bookstore into an art gallery and could use a supplement.

Thanks so much.

Punk is a really interesting niche in that I dated a chick who was proud of the fact she slept on couches and slummed around barely ever having to pay for shit. With that said......young punkers grow up and get jobs.....but like most of us.....they all want "to go home again" every now and then.

I would start by offering that massive collection of stuff you probably picked up from zines like FactSheet5...etc....that would be gold to an old punk rock fan.

I would also do a review on the best worst etc....punk movies and cds etc.....and affiliate direct from Amazon.

You are at least hitting the bulls eye doing this.

Damn I grew up in the Big 80's and now at 45......I am actually thinking of buying a DeLorean.....so our a lot of us Generation X peeps.......trying to get back "there."

    Best of Luck,

    Stay Legendary, Vegas Vince

That's awesome Vince thanks so much! I will try Amazon! Also reminded me I got a down on his luck friend who has been trying to sell me his punk poster collection. I may want to pick those up now. That would be a great target audience, the people who fondly remember when they used to dress up and mess up. I know there is a punk rock fetish crowd out there I would like to reach. Also I forgot to mention I found some punk e-books and CD's on Tradebit but the prices were high and commissions low. It's nice though that Tradebit pays out whatever you make not every hundred bucks you make.

When ever u deal with any type of memorabilia.....do yourself a favor and go to Ebay and hit up completed listings.....it gives you a fairly accurate price of what your item is worth. And for sure....vintage punk posters are the type of shit you need to be pushing on your site.

Get your traffic up a bit.....and you could do very well.....it's a small but PASSION BASED NICHE.

        PEACE, VV

Post an ad to sites like cragislist and tell your friend to tell their friends that you'll having a garage sale this weekend.

Thank you! At one point I will probably have a used book blow out at my bookstore and sell books for .50 cents a piece to make room for my art gallery.

Another thought for you besides the Amazon Affiliate program targeting Punk CD's etc.....if you can get your hands on any original stuff you or your friends did....slap that up on amazon as well.....and promote it via the site.

The main issue is monetize your site with what your target audience is interested in......

    Hi mate

Your first concern isn't monetisation, it's traffic. Build traffic using social (Facebook, Twitter, Music Forums et al.) and increased content on your site. When the numbers get bigger, then start thinking about the money.

The Amazon suggestion was pretty good, punk relevant items - could work out well once you get the numbers in.

Thank you! I find I get about 16 visitors average per blog I post. What is right amount of traffic to start thinking about money?

My e-zine only has 11 subscribers so I know I need to build that up a lot!

I think you need to get more visitors to earn some serious money regardless of monetizing.

My suggestion is cover amateur bands, and get them to drive traffic your blog, some of their traffic will stick..

Wow thank you so much everybody!! I'm so glad I signed up here!

I think I can get 200 visitors a day no problem. I'm over FB fan pages though as only a small percentage of my fans see the posts I make on mine.

I am def going to try reedit! Thanks so much!!

I been considering a podcast. I got a experienced punk rocker lined up for a telephone interview so that may be the way to go! Thanks!!

I see Hot Topic has a affiliate offer of 5%. Most scene don't like Hot Topic but I will all ways be fond of them from when I was a kid. I will look for a more underground clothes spot. Thanks!!

We met on one of the home recording forums, I forget which one.

My partner had already recorded some guitar backing tracks. Like a chord sequence, or sequence of rifss, etc He played them out in a song structure, and sent me a rough mix as a computer file.

I then wrote lyrics/melody to match the chord sequences, and recorded several versions of them, including lead vocals & backing vocals, and sent them back as a computer file.

I also told him if he need to rearrange the order of the bits, e.g.

If the original sequences of riffs was say

                1234

I might have said, I need you to make

22114355 - where 55 was a requested new bit, or something

                Or something like that.

So you see how 1 became 11, what I did was record two versions of me singing that bit, one version has the words for the first 1, one has the words for the second 1

So then we had to chop up and re-arrange the bits of the song to match the order of my lyrics / recorded vocals, send them back and forth.

Until we got the finished structure of the song.

Then we did vocal and guitar over-dubs using the same technique.

Then we did rough mixes, and final mixes, against sending them back and forth.

And then we kept doing it. Eventually we got about 18 songs, some of which have two or three different mixes.

Try hitting 200 unique visitors a day for starters, and work with that as a target. You can check unique visitors using Google Analytics.

Myspace would have been perfect for a site like this - get in touch with owners of high traffic Facebook Fan Pages (in Punk niche), and see if you can make some connections.. Or better still, create an 'I Love Punk' fanpage yourself.

I'm doing a similar site for reviews, news and articles in a particular music genre. After 3 weeks, I'm averaging at about 100 visitors a day. I'm promoting it through Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit (Reddit is really an underrated tool). Anyway, you should think about your competition and audience. To be able to provide unique content, you might want to focus on creating exposure for underrated bands. This will help you create content which can not be found anywhere else, help the artists / bands get known, and they will often spread the word about your site seeing they are hyped about the fact that people are writing about them.
Connect your site with people that are passionate about the genre, and help create something they want to see. Add a media section (easy nowadays with Bandcamp), and focus on creating paths to your website (upload videos on Youtube, post blog posts on reddit). My plan is to not look at monetizing the site until I get about 500 daily visits, and then still do it subtly so you won't sacrifice the quality of the site.

When you create some kind of community (which is possible if you narrow the subject of the site), you will be able to work together with bands and for example sell merchandise, or get payments to feature certain bands, or even sell their music with commission. There are a lot of ways to make money without seeming like it is your main goal for the site, something which can be dangerous when trying to create a community.

Either way, I would focus on generating traffic and a stable visitorbase for now. I try to stay away from listbuilding for this concept as it will do more harm than good in my opinion, this is more for affiliate sites and sites really aimed to sell products. Try to get returning visitors by creating unique content, you might even try to find other contributors within the community. Get passionate people to like your site and they will develop it for you in the form of adding content, exposure and discussion.

I hope it works out for you, and if you have any questions, let me know. Good luck. :-)

I was heavy into THE EXPLOITED for a number of years when I was younger. Now I can't listen to them...old, rocked out ears that will ring for a couple of days if I do. lol

Basically, you need to make some kind of deal for ticket sales affiliation. I'm not sure what is available, but you should concentrate also on hot local scenes and then do paid band promotion...gig spot promotions...do your own INTERVIEWS by podcast....stuff like that.

Target the clothes they wear, maybe even musical instruments. Find out what styles they like and where they buy their clothes, and scroll to the bottom of the page and see if they have an affiliate program. Get a newsletter on your site, and get them on your autoresponder, don't just let them leave. With them on your list, you can always figure out what to promote to them later.

    Is Punk Rock still about?

If you have been in the business that long you must know quite a few folks, contact some bands get them to make some decent recordings and sell CD's or downloads from your site for a cut.

Sell tickets to music gigs, lyric sheets, properly transcribed guitar tab, hair dye and gel (market you own label) chains, studs, ripped trousers, leather jackets, nose, ear, tongue and genitalia rings, tattoo design books, instruments, makeup and cosmetics, acne treatments, dental care, etc

Well that's what the ' Pistols needed
