The Twitter Snowball Effect
only call the Twitter Snowball Effect.
I am NOT an active Twitter recruitaholic. In other words, I don't go to all the
big names and follow everybody there just so I can get all these people to
follow me back. I simply went to a few people who I know and whose
opinions I value as marketers, and followed them.
I did this very early on when I first joined Twitter a few months ago.
And then I stopped.
Over time, I noticed that I'd get a few people follow me each day without
doing anything at all.
Then I noticed that I was getting more than a few people a day.
Well, a few months later, as of 3:10 PM today, I have had 39 people follow
me today alone.
Yesterday was 32.
As I am typing this, I just got yet another follower.
My inbox is starting to overflow with these notices.
It has been steadily increasing each day with no end in sight.
Those of you who are on Twitter, the ones who don't actively follow people,
see if the same thing doesn't begin to happen to you over time.
I'm not going to go into the math involved to explain why this is happening
but it's actually to be expected because of the way Twitter has been
promoted to its members, mostly in part, I think, because of Dana's great
book on the subject.
Naturally, with all the people out there who are using this method of
following all the people who are following the big names, the number of
people who get followed has to increase too.
Think about it...it's a two way street.
Therefore, you can actually build up a huge Twitter following simply by
starting out following a few people with many followers and stopping at
that point.
Hopefully, you'll follow people who are interested in the same things that
you are so that you're just not building a list of names. I've seen the
results that this following has gotten me both in my blog views and in my
sales.
Anyway, that's the Twitter Snowball Effect.
As Holmes would say..."Elementary."
