How would you monetize The Drudge Report?

How would you monetize an online newspaper like The Drudge Report. The main reason I ask is because newspapers typically cover a variety of topics -- they don't really have a niche. Do you think selling ad space is about the only way to go about this?

    Keep in mind newspapers are struggling these days too. NYT is using a subscription model with limited success. The more traffic you have the more you can sell advertising. You have to provide converting traffic or nobody really cares about you.

    If the site is exactly like The Drudge Report then use an external link monetizer like adf.ly and maybe use sites like blogads, buyads and buysellads within the page. The other thing is to collect emails for a daily newsletter featuring the days best stories ... monetize links the same way and sell classifieds within it.

    The subscription way doesn't really work for general news, because there are so many sources of the same news out there. The Financial Times is a subscription site because it offers unique content needed by investors, therefore their subscription model works.
