The best list you ever will have is the one you create yourself.

There is more legal red tape you have to go through with snail mail but there is more money offline than most people think. If you have a budget for offline it can be amazing but if you do not have any budget then offline isn't something I would focus on at first. You can still do it of course but it isn't going to be a large percentage of your marketing efforts starting out.

I do not like buying leads myself. I prefer to build lists using many methods but my favorite one I use is JV's.

I have helped build lists into the tens of thousands in various niches using combination of media buys (banner ads, list ad inserts etc..) but my most successful way by far was using Joint Ventures.

There is a lot of methods used to build lists and the more you do at the sametime the faster the list will grow. If you are not doing it I would also investigate social websites like facebook, twitter.

Here are just some of the ways I have used and others talk about on the forum that they have had success with when building their lists.

Joint Ventures ( MY FAVORITE METHOD)
    Social Sites (Twitter, FB etc...)
    Article Marketing
Free Giveaway (giveaway a report, audio, video etc... in exchange for email)
    Polls
    Blogs & Blog Commenting
Paid Ads (Offline magazine ads, online banner placement, PPC, other paid ads on and offline)
FFA (Free For All) - Some hate this, some get NO results, some get HUGE results...
    Endorsements
    Reviews

That is the basic core methods I and others here use to build lists and traffic.

Though you have to have a system or you are just throwing mud on the wall. You need to really build a funnel which includes FREE, Paid, front end, backend, upsell, downsell, cross sell etc etc etc.... All the things that is talked about, to get the best results. Though don't get all perfectionist on it, you need to just start and take action after you get the intial list process in place (squeeze page, autoresponder etc...)

Before you get into buying or building your own list make sure that your system is in place and working. You would be surprised how many just gloss over this step.

  • Hey Terry... I think he is talking about POSTAL mailing lists and physical leads.

Like as an insurance agent, I can buy leads...or I can buy a mailing list sorted by zip, income, family size, or whatever. Then send postcards.

    Marcus -

Buying leads suck. As many have already stated you are better off creating your own leads. If the leads were really that good why would the company sell them? If the leads are that good they would not sell them... they would sell them something.

But if you really are looking for the home based business leads check out the home based opportunity magazines. There are all kinds of lists available for sale.

Well that could be the reason you think buying leads suck because in those types of magazines yes the leads do suck. You need to look at reputable list companies. Start with the SRDS and go from their.

Buying and selling leads is big business.

I have been selling home business opportunity leads for nearly four years. It is a huge and rapidly growing market especially during this economy turndown. We generate over 30,000 leads daily from online and offline marketing and surveys. They include email and mailing addresses, and you may also order leads with telephone numbers. Leads are never sold more than twice. See my sig.

Paul - do you generate these leads yourself or are you
in partnership with another company that does it?

Generate leads your own way and find them. Then you will be sure that it is a fresh source to sell your products to them.

please don't buy leads. You'll just get spam complaints like crazy and your ISP will shut you down quickly. Generate your own. There's no spam risks

Do not buy leads. Total waste of time and money.
I have been there and done that.

Learn to generate your own targeted leads. These leads
will then be more receptive to what you have to say and
offer than any lead you can buy from a lead company.

You should have really sat down and did the math first... 250 is not a good sample rate, there is not enough to test with.

Here's what I would have done:

          1. Call the list owner, broker, whatever.

When you call them you can usually tell right away who is full of crap and who knows their stuff. This also gives you the opportunity to strike a deal outside of the normal list price.

          2. I always ask questions about their leads, when they were last sold to, what percentage bought and what was the overall spend.

Take those figures and see if everything jives. Work out the percentage you will have to convert at to break even. That right there will tell you the approximate size of a list to test with.

All depends on where you buy the leads from... There are legitimate leads lists out there however they are fairly expensive from my experience.

The cheaper ones do have a lot of spam complaints but the companies I've found are very reputable and judging from the return over the lifetime value of a subscriber it does make it worth the effort.

Thing is 99% of the people who buy leads end up buying the wrong market because they have not properly profiled their own market. They don't really have a clue about their ideal prospect and end up losing money.

Also, you have to take samplings of lists and test your offer. Don't just roll out to the entire list without testing your offer (that's plain stupid) and will cost you money big time.

There is quite a bit to learn when purchasing leads... I learned from ll the mistakes I made but even when a campaign doesn't work the lesson is well worth the small cost of the test run.

Almost everyone I know who has tried leads and say they don't work make the same mistakes. They write an email they think will produce results (again they don't test) and they blanket the entire list.

First, their email is way off because they never targeted their prospect correctly and the email doesn't offer anything new or exciting. What I mean by that is they say the same old thing offering the same old free stuff. There is zero creativity and marketingship...
