How to monetize a site with international appeal?

Thanks for clicking. I am a relative newbie in the planning stages of building an international entertainment news-based site. The self-created content will have a unique twist so that I won't be replicating what the giant sites all do (TMZ, People, etc.). I'll also have news feeds on it to bulk it up a bit. It will definitely appeal to people all over the world, thus I'm pretty confident that I can eventually drive large amounts of traffic to it. My problem is how do I monetize it?

For the sake of this post, let's give it a fictitious name of "stars.com"

1. If the site could appeal equally to people in dozens of countries, what sort of ads should I use? Amazon, Adsense, or?

2. If I'm in the US, how do I make money from someone in Italy or Brazil or any other country (given what you suggested for #1)? I don't quite understand that part despite my research. For example. I'd like people in multiple countries to buy DVDs and books.

3. English will be the site language, but I'm contemplating adding 1-2 other languages later. Is it worth the effort?

4. If I start with "stars.com", should I create "stars.co.uk", "stars.fr" as well and redirect them to "stars.com", or just keep it simple -- the one main site "stars.com"?

Thanks for sharing your advice.

The problem is ad localization. Google Adsense is excellent at this BUT your CPC rates might be low since you are going to be a 'general' site... Keep in mind that adsense ad value factors in traffic origin, niche, and other factors.

Thanks. Yes, that's my quandary. I can't figure out how best to proceed. Perhaps I'd make the most money by just focusing on whichever nation I end up getting the most traffic from.

Anyone else ever experience this problem?
