Where do my clicks come from?

Hi warriors,

My time for newbie questions...

I'm promoting a product through a squeeze page. I'm placing the link at different places and I want to know which of them is performing better (which text or banner is getting more clicks).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

You could use a link shortener / tracker like bit.ly, tiny url, and google has one as well (there's a bunch of them).

So you create multiple links (which all lead to the same place) but the tiny link is different.

    Example:

bitly/xy12 ==> goes to your site from youtube links
bitlyxy123 ==> goes to your site from facebook links

That way you will know how many clicks you get from each.

There are multiple ways of doing it but that is just one example.

If you have WordPress, I highly recommend Ad Trackz Gold

I use a lead source tracking script on the squeeze page
that automatically detects where the visitor came from.

Then, I have the opt-in form set-up with a field in the
background that auto-inserts the site that the person
      came from.

This is a good way to know which lead sources are most
effective and send visitors to the same page.

Careful with URL shorteners, you should just use your own redirects (you have more control and they can't be taken down.)

Or better yet setup a full fledged tracking solution like Prosper202 (free) or CPVLabs.

That is the long term solution.

even better, use woopra. Copy paste a small tracking code onto each page of your website and it will let you measure conversions for each source. I like it even better than google analytics.

There may be some easier methods, but this is what I do:

    - Install Wordpress in a directory on my site. For example: www.my-site.com/links
    - I then install the Pretty Links plugin - It's a url shortener that tracks clicks on your shortened urls.
    - I then create all my links within Pretty Links. For example: www.my-site.com/links/link_to_track

Note: I don't do anything else with this Wordpress site, it's sole purpose is to run Pretty Links

    Hope that helps!

Really a "squeeze page", Toletor, or did you mean to say "sales page"?

The reason I'm asking is that I suspect that you're talking at cross-purposes with Shaun (post #4 above) who has replied (for "squeeze page") when I suspect you meant "sales page"? Which may account for the confusion here ...

I assumed that because he specifically mentioned the word
"squeeze page" in his request, and that he had a squeeze
page in his sig file, that he meant squeeze page.

I could have assumed wrongly of course!

No ... you may be right, too, in which case I apologize! I thought from "I'm placing the link at different places and I want to know which of them is performing better (which text or banner is getting more clicks)" that the OP actually meant "sales pages" because squeeze pages wouldn't normally have "links at different places" but sales pages do? Sorry if I caused confusion, here, rather than ameliorating it!

I think you could also use Google analytics and check on In Page Analytics, to see where you're visitors are clicking.

Well, thanks a lot to all of you for your kind answers.

Yes I meant "squeeze page". It is the squeeze page in my signature. I need to know how many visitors come from my sig file. Next week I'll change the text in my sig file and I want to know if the new signature performs better or worse than this one.

I bought a solo ad and even though I did a little research on the seller and I trust he'll deliver the promised traffic, I'd like to keep track of that too.

      Same with the banners

It's a matter of keeping track on everything I do. Since I'm new to IM I think I better keep records on everything I try until I find "my own way" and I can analyze the results ... and when that happens... I'll just keep track on everything I do!!

I know all this is pretty basic for you guys, I'm just trying to learn!!!

      Thanks again for your replies

I think Terry Kyle released a wordpress plugin in a while back that tracked what link on your page was clicked on, I don't know the name of it but maybe you could search. Or use Pretty Links plugin, that would work.

what you should do is setup a tracking link for each traffic source, you can use bitly, but I use a plugin for wordpress called max a/b

This way I can see exactly what traffic sources are generating the most traffic and also to see which traffic source converts the best.

You always need to be backing up your results with proven and trackable data. Focus on removing all of the guess work from your business.

      That's extra and unnecessary work.

With the tracking script that I use, I can direct traffic
to the exact same page using the exact same link and
the script will automatically detect where the traffic
came from and track results by source too.

Yes: Rethink that! Don't measure vanity metrics, measure what actually matters: conversions, revenue, profit, ROI. You don't care which banner gets more clicks, you care which banner puts more money in your pocket. That might be the one with the least clicks if everyone that clicks spends money, where other banners bring lots of clicks that don't convert. If all you did was set up bit.ly links and track clicks like some people are advising, you'd cancel your best converting ad and throw more money at the worst, because you would have no idea that all the sales came from the banner with the few clicks!

Attributing sales to the original traffic source is the purpose of marketing analytics tools. A few have been mentioned already.

How does it do that when the referrer header isn't present, which it often isn't? (A: It can't)
