Microniche or authority based website?

Hi people,

Complete newbie here so be gentle

I am currently in the process of doing some niche research for an acne based website.

However I am at a loss as to whether I should focus on a micro-niche or broad (authority) based website.

I am quite educated in the subject as I (unfortunately) have personal experience in this area, so over the last ten years I have read a LOT on the subject, as well as using countless products.

For these reasons I feel confident in creating an authority site, but I worry about this niche being too competitive unless I narrow it down.

I'm really not a fan of the crappy affiliate acne sites and I feel I can do much better and provide some real quality content. I plan to create a site covering as much as possible about the subject.

Can anybody suggest if creating an authority site in a competitive niche is a complete waste of time, or is it possible to be successful in almost any niche if the content is good.

    Hi James, as long as you provide very deep content that spans many pages, you should be okay. I would focus on one longtail kw per page. Many small streams of targeted traffic can add up to a nice river of traffic. Of course, you should work on turning temporary and unstable SE-based traffic into a semi-permanent pool of potential buyers. In other words, work on building a list.

    Do both, authority site for sure, but also do micro niche sites, that you can set and forget just to pick up a few commissions from it on auto-pilot.

    Authority site. You can always section off micro-niche sections if you choose to go that route.

    Write unique, well written content that is helpful.

    Don't worry about search engine competition. There are other methods to drive traffic...trust me...you can get the traffic. Build a list. Build trust with the list. Promote your site, products, etc via the list.

    Note: You can also have sub-niche lists people can join and a master acne list.

      My vote goes for authority site too....it's just too hard to keep micro sites in Google these days.

        Microniche for me...

        Say you've build a big autority website... and suddenly google slap you big time and you lose all your hard work at once... it sucks when that happens big time

        so if you have a few microniche sites and google slap only 1... you wont lose all your work at once.

    Thanks for the help everybody, great advice that I will certainly take on-board. It's great to get some impartial advice from experienced marketers, rather than family members telling me every idea I suggest is great

    Just another question that has been nagging away at me...are there any niches to avoid for a relative newcomer? I'd been told to stay away from niches such as money, health, love, food, sports and probably every other niche I can think of.

    As I mentioned before my ultimate aim is an authority acne based site with quality content, obviously with a goal to monetize it. Is this a realistic goal to achieve within 1 to 2 years?

    How about creating a sub-niche authority site?
    My suggestion: ache for men authority site, etc.

      That certainly would help to reduce some competition. Perhaps it's best if I begin with a sub-niche as you suggest with the view to building the authority site. This way I can build a steady (and hopefully) increasing flow of traffic over time, all the while adding quality content to the site.

      Obviously an authority website is not built overnight, so maybe concentrating one sub-niche one at a time will help me to grow the site that I envisage for the the future.

      Hi Lara,

      Thanks for the advice. I've written some articles on the subject and I'm hoping with time I can perfect my writing skills..it all takes time I genuinely do want to provide a quality service to people so hopefully that will show through in the content. I'm sick to the back teeth hearing that "content is king" but it is, without doubt, the most important aspect of a successful site.

    Yeah definitely go with an authority site. You have way more potential to rank for long-tails and authority sites just generally seem to be better resources of information than micro-niche sites. Good luck!
