Are You Actually Ready For Paid Traffic Yet?!!

Hi dear warriors

There has been this endless debate that whether we should go for Paid Traffic or Free Traffic?!?!

Here's what my own experience says...

If you a complete newbie.... and you know nothing about conversions and all... Please keep away from paid traffic stategies.
No doubt, paid traffic strategies are great and and definitely speeds up your progress.
But only if you know your NUMBERS.

What I mean by numbers is... Your EPC!
EPC is Earnings Per Click. This mean, You know that if X visitiors visit your page, you will make Y out of the whole deal. What I exactly mean is... Do you know if 'x' number of people visits your landing page, how many will convert.... means how many of them will take the exact action that you want them to take. This is the most important number you just need to know, when you are going for paid traffic.

If you do not, I will suggest you keep away from paid traffic yet. Or you will lose some big money. I have done that , and I have lost some into it.
First you get your numbers clear and sorted.
You need to get good at conversions. You need to get good at copywriting. Very important.

Now there is an exception to this. Here is it..
If you have a experienced mentor to work with you, who can work help you to get your numbers right, then you can definitely get into some paid tactics. But, be sure that you have some good extra cash to blow on it for sure. Becoz you need to pay your mentor for that (most of the time, its an hefty sum) & then you need to spend some on your first trials and errors. Once you get it all done and right, you are ready to crush it all.

But....

If you don't have that initial money to invest, free traffic is your best weapon to go for.
Learn some good free traffic startegies and work with them. Get just few of them and master them. DO NOT try 1000s of them, or else none will work for you. The reason behind is that you will be spreading yourself too thin.
You just need to master 2 or 3 of them to get the job done.

Below are the ones that has worked pretty well for me are:

1. SEO - I know, as many says that SEO is dead now, with all these numerous Google updates. Please do not believe them. Do it yourself and try it, & see if it works for you or not. Becoz this has worked well for me.

2. Forum Marketing - Get involved with some good active forums of your market and you will be benifited a lot from them. many does the mistake that they just hit the forum and start spamming it left and right. Wrong! Try to add value to it, as much as you can. Try to help.

3. Content Syndication - This is were you just write an article and get it into as mnany formats as possible, like videos, audios & PDFs. Distribute it to as many places as possible and this will give you a massive exposure to you. Remember, you need to add value to the market.

4. Blogging: This is a great way to get some good free traffic. Get a blog for yourself. You can start with a free blogging platform like Bloggers or Wordpress.com. Though its advisable that, if possible, do get a domain name of your own. But one thing for sure, if you are writting keyword related articles on this free web properties, like Bloggers or even Squidoo lenses, you will get some good search engine love, that's for sure. You can also engage with the other related blogs of your niche by going thro' them and then posting good and valuable comments on them. Again, add value.
Spamming is a big 'no no' every where. You do not want to get started on the wrong foot.

So that's it.
If you want to go for paid traffic, make sure you get your numbers right first. Or at least you have someone to guide you to get you on track. Otherwise, Free traffic is what I recommend!!

Hope this help you a bit!

Regards, Amitav.

    Thank you for your post.

    Good information for newbies.

    I personally prefer paid traffic.
The only free traffic I do is forum marketing.

    Hi there,

Nice and interesting post! At the moment, I am only using free traffic, like I have always done anyway! I use forum and blog commenting as well as article marketing. I am shying away from all the social media CIRCUS big time and although I have heard good things about paid traffic, I have yet to explore it! To me, paid traffic sounds a bit more like "the stock exchange" and when you have money to invest, you really want to know how things works etc..."calculated risk" and since I have no, or little knowledge, I am not going to dive in right away! I will do someday, maybe....:, but for now, I am happy with free traffic!

    Thanks

Great post. Start by using free traffic, earn some money and then try paid traffic. Free traffic does take time to yield results but when you do get traffic it is for the long-term. Paid traffic on the other hand is fast but short term.

I personally prefer organic traffic, not just because it is free, but it gives you the ability to laser target traffic and do preselling. Free traffic can have a conversion rate that is very high when done correctly and can prove to be more profitable in the end.

I consider paid traffic a great way of testing analytics and promoting special events. It does convert if handled correctly, but for many is has proven to be high risk with low results.

Paid traffic might be good for those looking to get in, grab the money, and get out, if they have a lot to invest. But, for those looking to build a real online business that has loyal, repeat customers, then paid traffic is not going to be effective in building the relationship that is needed.

Basically, the reason why organic traffic works is the same reason social media works. People love to get to know others and connect. They like to buy from people they trust. Organic traffic generation methods can establish a person as a trusted authority in their niche.

Really? I'm sure you have some research to back that up?

While your in process of enlightening us all, you should also give us an operational definition for "successful business"? Otherwise you are speaking Latin to scientific based thinkers like me.

The fact is, its dependent on more than 1 factor. In certain niches, paid traffic is extremely competitive. Far more competitive than SEO. Especially now with all these google updates, paid traffic is becoming more and more competitive.

Also, if your entire business relies on ppc or paid traffic you don't really have a "business" in the first place. The second you shut if off... where did your business go?

SEO has had a much higher ROI for our company, and it is far less competitive in our niche. No matter how optimized our landing pages are, it still costs $300-$500 just to make 1 sale. Sure we could run a business on that, but the ROI sucks compared to SEO, so that where we invest most our money. I have hoards of youtube videos that bring in more traffic than our PPC ads ever could. Not to mention, it is higher quality traffic and sells better.

If we had to pay for that traffic, I don't even want to tell you how much it would cost.

In any event, a succcessful business should be focused most on ROI. What ever produces the highest ROI, thats what they should do. Needless to say, I'm not even trying to run the most successful business in the world. Not even in our state. Thats too much work for me no matter how I look at it. I'm perfectly happy being a small business, making my humble 6 figures a year, and using as little paid traffic as possible.

I don't like the terminology but I understand the approach. What you are really doing is building a reputation with people. If you just see it as "traffic" I think that is limited thinking (and maybe you don't see it that way). When you realize there are real people that you need to find and build relationships, you get it.

Good post Amitav. I have always said that Internet marketing is the great equalizer. What you lack in money you can make up for by investing time and vice versa.

However, I personally have found that paid traffic is the one thing you can control to a certain extent.

All of the Google updates that killed websites ranked that were getting free traffic is good example of this. However the sites doing ppc ads on Google, Yahoo, and so on never missed a beat.

As you get the skills, and some money, mixing in a little paid traffic with the free methods is a smart way to generate stable traffic to your sites.

Actually I think paid traffic might actually be good to improve your selling skills if you are new, but you have to be able to loose money at first of course.
Imagine you are just starting out, your sales copy, funnel, etc. will probably be weak and need a lot of changes, but of course you need to test in order to improve, and with paid traffic you can get traffic to your landing page fast and if the click throughs/conversions are low you´re gonna tweak untill the numbers are good, and you´re going to have to wait a lot of time to get to that point relying on just free traffic.

I believe that the real IM use paid traffic sources. First of all organic/free traffic can hardly make you rich simply because you cannot have too much of it and you need to spend much time and sometimes money too in order to get it.

Paid traffic requires some budget, that's true. Even the experienced IMs loose money on paid traffic sometimes. Paid traffic is a game that you learn playing on the way. Once you get the formula - sky is the limit.

For two years I worked with organic/free traffic only and was happy until Google's penguin update. Now I am mastering the ppc skills. That is not easy but it worth trying. After few months I am on the break even ROI that is good enough for getting skills until I find what really works here.

This is quite an impression lesson you held, here :-)
I think this is like a real mentoring session.
When you are e newbie, it is extremely difficult to learn all these by yourself, and I think posts like this one saves a lot of time and surely a lot of trouble.

    Thanks :-)

Good tips for beginners, in the end everyone should aim for both organic and paid advertising to yield the best results.

Once you have enough experience you can start new projects by using paid traffic, getting a positive ROI then using those funds for long term seo

    Rinse and repeat

A very good point here. A lot of so called Gurus are playing this melody since 2010. Its all business for them. They want to make people believe more on themselves than SEO and pour their pocket with a lot of money.

The reality is that SEO has always been a fickle game and even more so now. Focusing all your efforts on SEO is silly because Google can come along at ANY time and take away all your hard work. So whilst I do still recommend doing SEO you don't want to focus all your efforts on it as if your only traffic is SEO traffic you might find suddenly find yourself with NO traffic overnight.

I am not talking about focusing on SEO solely. If you are ethical in your SEO tactics and provide user friendly (not search engine friendly) contents, the chances of loosing traffic will become lower.

Imagine, you are building link wheel to rank your site and all of a sudden google ban link wheels. Now your ranking is bound to drop. (I mean all the shortcut techniques). People achieved ranking in past through angela-paul backlinks. That system was not ethical. In the name of building backlinks they were loading some sites with spam.

On the other hand, if you continuously build good quality links for your site on a regular basis you may not get ranking very fast but the moment you will reach in the top, you will stay there for longer time.

There are a lot of business online which gets majority of the traffic from paid traffic sources yet they do SEO to get free traffic from search engines. Only PPC as a traffic source can be very dangerous if you cannot achieve good conversion rate. Because PPC itself is extending your marketing budget and you will have to recover all of them through your business.

In Googles eyes there is no such thing as ethical SEO. SEO by nature is all 'blackhat'. Google doesn't want you building any artificial links at all regardless of whether you consider them 'quality links' or not.

What if someone can make Google consider artificial links as "quality", "ethical" links? People can do this. You can do the illegal things in the legal way. No objection there.

Of course, it looks like you are a big fan of paid traffic. You have money to spend for traffic. What about those people who are solely depended on free traffic and don't have any budget for paid traffic?

I tried PPC with BreezeAds.. Man, that was a waste.

I had HUNDREDS of clicks and ZERO conversions.

That was really frustrating. I am pretty new though so I am going to be concentrating on SEO for now.

    Thanks!

Paid traffic is not good for two reasons.

    Reason

#1 it is short term traffic

#2 you have to pay for every click

Free traffic beats paid traffic by miles and miles. It converts better and also its long term. So don't focus on trying to get traffic right away focus on building on what you have and go from there.

There are some very good points here. I think it is ultimately left up to the individual and their specific results. Some paid methods work, but as others have said, it can be short-lived. The Free methods of course are time consuming but can yield lasting results if "courted" properly. Courting means in my opinion to ensure that when they land on your site, you have the "right" material in place to capture their attention. If you have that in place, then the likelihood of them sticking around increases dramatically.

It's all a game of testing to see what yields the best results. Everyone will have their own experiences and will figure out what works best. Just understand that it's a marathon and not a sprint.

Paid traffic can be good and a very viable option if you know what you're doing. Thing is, most newbies and beginners don't really understand what their yet doing so recommending paid traffic to them is a big mistake in my opinion.

I think it's better for a newbie to first learn about properly setting up a sales funnel and list building tactics before investing into paid traffic.

Doing otherwise would be putting the cart before the horse.

I know.....Paid traffic is addictive as its instant and you can scale it up pretty big! But if you are not sure of your numbers, you can lose big time.....

The most beautiful aspect of free traffic for me is that it surprises you sometimes. For eg., You post an article sometimes, somewhere and you just happen to forget about it. Then suddenly, one fine day, out of the blue, you get a sale notification into your email. I can't explain you how wonderful it feels. It really feels great..not working for every penny you get! You know what I mean here.

About SEO, I am still into it and it still does great, if you know what you are doing! the only issue you may habve is that you may have to keep updated all the time. People complaint that you have to "depend" on Google. But don't we have to depend on something or the other anyways in our businesses, whether you do email marketing or paid traffic or any other model. You just can't run an "Isolated" entity!

I do agree that if you want to go really BIG with your campaign, Paid Traffic is the way. But I always prefer the free ones, specially SEO. Just a personal preference. It gives me that "passive" feel - Do it ones and get paid forever type of income streams. I have few of them and I enjoy them a lot. Although I would never suggest to keep all your eggs in one basket. So make sure you have few many of the traffic streams coming into your sites. paid traffic can be just one of them.

But here is my question to you..
Would you like $50K per month and work 40-50 hours a week OR,
Would you prefer to make a comfortable $10K-$15K a month while working just 15-20 hours a week?!?!

I just happen to be the 2nd type.

So if you are like me to be prefer mind peace over wealth (being content & satisfied), & who prefers to be NOT involved with your business all the time & all day long, learn SEO and go for it! It works. I just love it.

Why?! Well...Here is the exact screen shot of the email of my first ever sale online.....

And guess what.....It was SEO that made me this!

I love this stuff!! ( Did I already said that?)

    Regards!
