"The Money Is In The List"

This saying gets thrown round quite a lot here "The money is in the list". Yes there is money in the list, heck, there is a lot of money in lists if you know what you are doing. It seems like there is this notion amongst people that this is the only way to be successful online and this isn't the case at all... There are people killing it in every form of marketing online. There are people making millions in this business without even making a list.

I have my own take on this saying...

"The money is in the system"

There is no point having a list if you do not have a system which is pre put in place to make the money from it. By having a system put in place, it means that your subscribers are guided all the way through the process and you can then test the system to make it better. This way you can split test email headers, the actual email content, the page they are sent to, the pages conversion rate etc... By doing all of this you will realize that the money isn't in the list, it is in the system you have put in place to make that list effective.

Don't just rely on your list though! Let's take Amazon for an example, I receive emails every couple of days from Amazon about products I searched for but didn't buy. This obviously yields them a good chunk of change but is that the only way they make money? Of course not, they are running ads on TV, they have built up a trusted brand, they are all over social media and are constantly being talked about in magazines/papers. What they are doing is utilizing every possible aspect they can to make their business better.

So yes, there is money in a list but it is one factor in your business which you should be utilizing. There are many more factors which will make your business a lot more profitable. By combining these factors together into one harmonises system, this will yield the best results and a sustainable business.

Make sure you have a system in place which converts each source into dollars.

    Very well said... your list becomes a liability (ie webhosting and autoresponder fees) if you aren't marketing to it consistently in a systematic way.

    Even if you just have 2 follow up letters in place....that's *something* and you can always grow from there. The system is all important.

    With list building, the cost per lead goes down as you only ever have to acquire that lead once...but all they are at that point are leads.

    No matter where your lead comes from, if you don't have a system in place through testing, copy, offers, etc...you will have a hard time converting leads into customers.

    The idea behind list building is that you acquire that lead once, and then build a relationship with that lead so they are more likely to purchase from you.

    Big companies like Amazon don't use their list for relationship building...their website does that. Therefore, they don't use their list as a sales system. It is more of a "don't forget about us" system....top of mind marketing.

    You certainly cannot ignore "system building". It is vital.

    You're completely right about creating systems
    and then replicating those systems.
    If you include building an email list into it
    then you're boosting your strategy to the max.

    1. Targeted niche
    2. Good copywriter and product
    3. 2 to 3 contacts or more closes the sale.

    Intertesting point about the money being in the system.

    You are absolutely right in this if you consider those who simply buy a list. It gets them nowhere. The subscribers on that list do not know who this person is and unsubscribe in a hurry accusing them of spam. Their accounts get banned from the autoresponder.

    Alternatively, the person spends a lot of money building a list through expensive marketing, but does not know how to monetize that list afterwards. This makes it an expensive liability which very quickly goes cold. Again - ultimately worthless.

    All that said - and I do take your point - I still think there is no faster way to make money online, and if you build the list (and system) in the right way, you will have an asset for life rather than a worthless liability.

    The most important elements of list building is to have a system for:

    Generating a steady amount of fresh leads into your funnel every single day whether they are buyers or prospects

    Converting leads into paying customers


    Unless you have a steady amount of leads into your business every day you will find it very difficult to grow your business. This is of course where traffic comes in and using affiliate programs to lget others to send you the traffic for free ;-)

    List building may not be the "only" way to make money....

    But it is a long term strategy and was the ONLY business model that worked for me... And is still working 3 years later

    So - while list building may not be the ONLY business model - why would you not take advantage of it to increase earnings?

    butters, I think you are dead right.

    I have helped one local business build an extremely responsive, good size lists ( around 1000 people) - I mean we are talking about 105% and 110% open rates - no joke, people forward the emails on this to their friends that ARE NOT in the auto responder, it's crazy!

    And yet, despite this almost fanatic interest in this little stores products, they fail, despite my urging and assistance to truly capitalize on this asset they have.

    So, yeah, you can have a great list, an fanatical interest in your content/product, but if you don't communicate with your subscribers, it absolutely worthless.

    Your list is your asset especially if you have won their trust and you have built very good relationship with them. List building takes time but it can eventually be very rewarding.
