I am not sure that it HAS to be your name.

I mean, is Perez Hilton a birth name? just for example.

No, but Paris Hilton is. (Of both a person and a hotel, in fact).

Yea it's a great idea, many people do it. Julian Micheals is a brand for example, people know and trust her workouts or products with her name on them.

I think it is a great idea to brand yourself IF you are sure that is the niche you want to be known for.

Yeah, if you're selling snake oil then maybe not, but in fitness it is a great and very profitable idea

Yes I agree that using your own name as a brand is a good thing. People get used to seeing the name and if you have good information and products, people will follow you.

If you are a personal trainer your name is your brand, not sure if you are one or not I'm just assuming. Either way it's a good idea to brand yourself in that niche because people feel more comfortable when they put a face on the product and believe it or not they feel closer to you.

BigBallin, Yes, it definitely can be a good idea to brand your own name, but there's a big disadvantage to consider.

            First, some advantages...

People like being able to see that there's a real person behind the business, so self branding is good for winning trust. Also, you're likely to be using your own name in communications with your customers anyway, so you're already halfway there in getting them to remember you. And being memorable is SO important.

Naturally, you'll want to Google "Big Ballin" or whatever before you begin, to make sure that 338,000 other people with the same name don't already have difficult-to-beat top spots in Google. If they do, you might want to modify your name by using a nickname or non de plume so that you end up with a name that's unique. Or you might modify your real name to give it nice alliteration, making it easier to say and easier to remember.

If your name really is unique, you'll have no trouble at all getting the top spot in Google.
(I was lucky enough to be given a name that was fairly easy to get ranked No.1.)

Here's one important disadvantage you need to consider carefully...

You may surprise yourself. Circumstances or interests may change or unexpected events occur, such as a major health setback, and in a few years you may decide to sell your business. As my accountant advised me, if you've built your business around your name and your personality, it's very likely to be more difficult to sell than if you've chosen a more generic name.

      Awesome to hear bigballin6161

I set up my personal training business with my name in it. How much did it have an affect? Not sure...

Never had the business without my name in it to compare it to

Either way I would definitely recommend branding your name and best of luck with the blug

It would also depend upon what your name is!

If you have a difficult to spell or pronounce name (my last name fits into that category) then it might not be a good idea. Or if it's a silly name or one with an alternate meaning then it may also not be the best plan.

I'm assuming your mother didn't really name you "Bigballin" so I have no idea how yours would look as a domain name!

Otherwise as others have said it can be a good idea, especially in your niche. As you are making your own products you could brand them with your name, and don't overlook the opportunity of publishing a few Kindle books in the fitness niches to build up your reputation.

It's a good idea either way. For example, there are plenty of success stories that are product name based but also plenty that are built on the name of the person as well.

I think it's a good idea either way also. If you have a name thats hard to spell, I would stay away. If you have a unique name that's not too difficult it may be to your advantage.

I use my firstname.lastname.com (KeAmberVaughn) but my logo is "Coach Ke" because it can be remembered easier

I think just like anything else, it always begins with the end in mind. If you consider yourself an artist who is eager to make a name for yourself within a niche that speaks directly to your heart and that you connect with, then it might serve you to be as transparent as possible.

However, if your approach is strictly entrepreneurial in nature and your name of the game is strategically to create a lot of value, make a lot of money, retain your privacy and you could care less whether your real name is connected with the brand, I think it might be wise to go with a pen name.

So it's my belief that there is not 100% right answer. Your path is unique to you, as is everyone else's. Eban Pagan started as David DeAngelo until it made sense for him to go with his real name for credibility sake.

Start with the end in mind and see what speaks to your heart most and then follow that. In the end, taking action and having the willingness to make mistakes while learning from them is the only way you're truly going to find your answer. Best of luck man.
