Strange things are happening to my links. Any suggestions?

Hi Warriors

I just posted a post and then I was commenting on some blogs with commentluv. These sites allow your recent post links to show in the comments.

I noticed that the link to the post I posted had &#8211 in it. When it happened on another comment I made again, I began to explore and I noticed that this appeared in some other posts I published as well.

I never noticed this before. What is happening is that &#8211 replaces a dash in my posts. In the other posts the &#8217 replaces apostrophe.

I went back to the new post and removed the dash from the title, updated the post and went to the same blog to comment again and the &#8211was gone.

I have never noticed it before and I have commented often on blogs with or without commentluv.

Does anyone know why it is happening? I often used dashes and apostrophes in my titles and this the first time I am noticing it.

Do you think that perhaps it has something to do with the new version of Wordpress? I have used dashes and apostrophes in my posts for years and I never came across this.

Thanks,

Dita

    Hi Dita,

I have found the same text appearing when I comment on a blog with CommentLuv enabled but I hadn't worked out that it was anything to do with my post title.

I noticed it had happened to other reader's post links and assumed it was something to do with the latest upgrade to CommentLuv.

      Hi Sandy,

It must be the case. I have been in touch with a great guy on Wordpress support forum who gave me a few suggestions but nothing worked.

As well, I deactivated some recent plugins and that also did not help.

I am glad you responded because it makes me feel a bit better. Maybe there are other warriors around who have commentluv on and are perhaps seeing the same issue arise.

That would surely confirm your observation.

Hope I'll solve this soon. There is always something!

      Take care

It's probably worth contacting CommentLuv support about it.

I don't use Commentluv, it does sound like some kind of glitch in the upgrade to me. No doubt someone is busy sorting out the code.

    Hope this helps. Moriarty xx

Restore your backup and try again.... one should always have a "development site" to upgrade to first. But if this is a bug then I am sure it has been announced on the WP forums. If you find an answer please let us know.

    PS: commentluv = trouble

It seems like the character set has possibly not been defined in the software. Maybe CommentLuv has a bit of rogue software?

I wonder what will be the solution. I think this is some character encoding problem.

      Hi.

I have received an email from commentluv and it is pretty interesting:

"wordpress recently updated the simplepie library which commentluv uses to fetch the feeds and it has changed many things with it.
I suspect that they also changed the way it handles encoding which is
probably why you're seeing this for hyphens and other special characters.

I will see what I can do for a future update. "

      I wonder
if anyone is seeing this issue in their feeds.

    Hi Aromo,

You would think that. I can see that many people are affected and comentluv is a pretty expensive product to not address this immediately.

On the other hand I must be fair to Andy from commentluv. He is an awfully nice man and perhaps it is not a very easy fix. I would not know as I am not very techie.

so sorry about not fixing this sooner, I have been going through some health issues which has kept me away from coding for a while.

good news is, you can fix this by updating to the beta version 3.0.3.9.2 either by auto updating the latest version and ticking the box for 'get beta update' or by downloading it from the members site.

I'll update the free version of the plugin too.
