Strange Email Opt-ins...Spam?

Hey All,

Did a search looking for info on this but I couldn't really find anything dealing with email opt-ins only comments.
I've been getting opt-ins to my (Aweber) list daily, about 5-7 a day with all similar
email addresses, example= johne537@aol, johnf130@aol, johnk587@aol.
Can't figure out why I would get opt-ins to the list, I have a spam blocker on my comments so I'm not getting spam comments as was previously a problem.
Anyone experienced this?
If so, what did you do about it?

Thanks for your help!

Natalie

    Hi Natalie,
I get spam submissions via one of my contact forms pretty often, some of them containing similar email adresses you mentioned, always with three numbers.

I'd say it's caused by automated spambots trying to post to your optin form.

I have a spam blocker on my comments...
Whatever you do they might minimize the spam subscriptions. I have a SMF forum where spammers register like 20 or 30 accounts a day... Even with CAPTCHA. I had to disable registrations temporarily.

Try implementing two or three anti-spam methods like CAPTCHA and Qs&As.

    Hey Mike,
    sure thing:

Most of the spambots have one or both of these goals:

    1. Send regular spam emails to webmasters through forms, or
    2. post comments containing spam links on blogs.

    And regarding CAPTCHAs:
I recommend avoiding those on opt-in forms as they add an additional hoop for your prospective subscriber to jump through.
I'd rather get 100 spam submissions than lose one subscriber due to a CAPTCHA - I'm serious, getting a subscriber is very valuable to me 8-).

I think I even read a few days ago that a rather big site removed CAPTCHAs from their registration process, I'm sorry to say I don't remember which site it was.

I get a lot of those, too. I didn't really know where they were coming from, but these explanations make sense. Thanks for asking the question! And thank you to those who answered.

I agree that it's best to keep it as easy to subscribe as possible, even if it means adding some spam subscribers. I know I hate dealing with captcha codes when I'm signing up for something.

    Anytime Jenifer.

And yes: From a user perspective I can also say I like processes that flow easily without - sometimes unnecessary - obstacles.
