Newbie assumptions...am I right or wrong

First, I want to say WOW…this forum is awesome. I studied different “blueprints” and bought a few WSO’s, took the info, and made a plan for my first project. So far it’s a couple days behind schedule. A lot of unknowns keep popping up, but it’s all part of the learning curve. I’m not the most technologically savvy person and that’s where most of my issues are coming from. I think I’ll be ready to start the actual marketing by the end of the week.

I need some of my assumptions either confirmed or challenged in this post. I have been studying IM for about 2 months--- take a couple weeks because of my travels during the holidays.

1. SEO is important, but not that important. I’m reading conflicting views… is it based on individual business models?

2. Keyword research is conducted based upon the competitions web-sites. These keywords (in moderation) should then be used to develop the content of my site.

3. Once you develop enough content, your website will be indexed by the search engines if you have your pings set in wordpress.

4. Content drives sales. The aesthetics of the website are not as important as the content.

5. Automation is what we should be striving for. I know this is important in any business, but I am finding my time being spread thin as a beginner. When I do something on my own I tend to have to know everything about it, but when it’s automated I can focus on priorities instead of tedious tasks.
a. What is the best software for SEO and back links? As a newbie what software should I be considering to make my life easier and to streamline my processes.
b. Good SEO /backlink software should also drive traffic which should help build my list…

6. I should have a mentor/coach.

Everything you've mentioned is pretty solid. The only thing I would advise is for you to NOT worry too much about your competition. Instead focus on offering value and writing highly engaging blog posts and articles that helps answer your readers questions. But you have the right mindset to achieve success online. Good luck

    1. SEO is important...but, in doing SEO, you are often doing the very things that will keep customers on your site....
    2. Keywords tell your readers (and Google) what you are about. So, they are essential!
    3. Getting your site indexed is a start....
    4. You need both. People need to be entertained. Surfers leave in an instant when nothing catches their eye.
    5. Automation can't hurt. I wouldn't invest heavily in it from the start. I wouldn't invest in it on a limited budget.
    6. Having a dependable, web-savvy mentor never hurts.

It's what you do when no one is watching
that determines what you will be able to
    do when everyone is watching.

about your number 3, its not just content. it should be content with high quality. thats what newbies dont understand. dont just settle for enough content, because in the end that content will be the one to maintain your blog or site.

It depends what your definition of SEO is.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. That is, optimizing your website and it's content so the search engines rank it favorably. That is definitely something you should always do. That means using clean code, meta tags, heading tags, alt image tags, sprinkling your keywords throughout your content, and so on.

But a lot of people nowadays seem to think SEO is about sending a whole lot of junk links to your site and trying to get it to rank higher. That's not about optimizing your website and that's where the confusion is.

Thank god Google have made things a lot more difficult nowadays and all that link building stuff is much harder than it used to be.

Just concentrate on the basic SEO elements on your site and then focus on creating and providing real and unique content that people naturally want to consume and share.

That is what SEO is all about. Not link building pyramids or $5 link packages. Those games are over.
