What's so special about eBooks?

Almost everyone on this forum and other forums talks about making money by creating eBooks. I know they may seem like an easy medium to create, but seriously, why don't most people create DVDs and audio based products?

I would even argue that making a training video is easier than writing an eBook. Let's not forget about the success of P90X. I don't know what they are but there are tons of other similar products. So, again, why don't people create DVDs instead of eBooks?

A lot of people do make videos. Some make both videos and eBooks.

But the reason people continue to write eBooks is because people continue to read them. Especially with the ease of Kindle and tablets eBooks can be ordered quickly, cheaply, and read anywhere. Personally, I much prefer to read than to watch a video. That's why I choose to write eBooks for a living. However, many other people prefer videos. Why not offer both?

Good answer Rose. I don't want to create eBooks, because I don't necessarily think they would serve me a purpose. When I create a product, I'd like it to be as mainstream as possible. For example, I can't imagine an eBook being offered along with the P90X DVDs. People are constantly buying eBook readers, but I just don't think eBooks are mainstream yet. Plus, regardless of the value, I personally don't see myself pricing an eBook @ $100 or more. With DVDs, it's much easier to have a higher price point. I can simply do this by creating a DVD set. Also, I'd like to initially make cold-calling a big part of my marketing plan, and feel like having a set of DVDs would be converting much better than an eBook, but maybe an eBook would be nice for getting email and phone leads.

I agree - P90X in an ebook may not be the best way to go except that it could show a step-by-step of each exercise - or an alternative way to do an exercise. The thing is, there are various formats in which information can be delivered. You have to determine which is the best fit for the information being delivered. And if it would work in multiple formats that would appeal to various people - we all have different preferences as to how we consume information - then go that route.

Some things can't be put on video as well as on ebook. But anyway, it's just a matter of preference.

Barrier to entry and profit margins. Most people can't afford to promote anything with low margins, because most people haven't got the budget needed to promote or swallow any losses which occur on some of the campaigns.

People always do the low risk easy stuff and wonder why they make no money. While a few do the high risk, hard stuff like setting up a fully fledged ecommerce business along with staff and a warehouse and are doing $1m+ after 3 years.

It's like the old saying goes, rich people are willing to do what poor people aren't. Like risking $2,000 on Adwords to start a business in a niche for example.

Great answer my friend. I really didn't know there was a saying like that, but it makes sense. That's always been my attitude. If I'm gonna do a project, I'm gonna do it big. If it fails, it fails, but if it succeeds, then I get rich. It may sound simple to some people, but it really is. To make it big, you gotta think big.

I make/sell eBooks and they're a great source of income. Here are some comparisons you can make for ebooks vs videos:

    videos:
    + cheaper faster to make
+ can seem more valuable and personal to prospective buyers
+ can be edited to make a highlight reel
    - require costly cameras, videos, lighting equipment to look professional
    - harder to send to your customer whether online or offline (files are big, hosting space, transfer rates, etc)

    ebooks
+ doesn't require special tools to make
+ can be distributed through many places (your website, amazon, etc)
+ can be rehashed and re-labelled to sell under different names
+ can be translated to other languages easily
+ can seem more valuable (100 page ebook feels like it has more information than a 60-minute video)
+ doesn't require you to be a good speaker or comfortable on camera
+ can be outsourced since nobody knows if it's you who wrote it or not
    - takes far more time (writing, editing, also layout if you want it to look really professional)
    - can be inefficient for explaining certain types of information

Also, eBooks have a bigger market. There are a lot of people who won't buy video/audio products.

Alexa, I'm talking about mainstream. To me mainstream is more TV infomercials and physical products such as DVDs.

The key is to have both.
In my first product that I created I had just videos. I wanted to show people the fastest way to succeed. The problem I got was that everyone does not have that fast internet so the videos took some time for them to upload.

One thing to keep in mind on making video DVDs (specifically computer DVDs). If you are looking at internet sales the majority of computer sales this Winter were notepads and smart phones, neither of which have DVD players. So you also need to think about downloads or online streaming sites.

I think lots of people create them because lots of people read them. Okay, as everybody knows video is big in 2013, but if a customer wants video he has to pay a higher price for the product usually. That's why many people go for the eBook first (and that's why many marketers offer the videos as an OTO for their eBooks because it's an easy upsell)

And another reason is that you will need the right tools to create professional videos if you don't like to sell crap to people!

I have friends who are dyslexic and literally cannot read.

You would think from this that they would obviously prefer an audio visual learning experience over an ebook.

However this is not the case, instead by using reading software set to read text at very high speed they can ‘read’ an ebook far faster than you or I can.

I think that were always be room for traditional reading material albeit served in a contemporary package
