WHAT DO YOU DO?!? - [Niche Marketing]

I am in need of some help.

I have read that its best to pick a niche that you are passionate about, but what if your niche doesn't have a market OR the niche you would like to talk about is heavily saturated?

I'm a graphic designer/marketing consultant. I a lot of my work has been with small businesses, non-profits and churches.

I am very passionate about marketing for small businesses and churches. At moment church marketing isn't extremely big, but there are some successful sites in this area. The same goes for mall businesses. There are a few blogs that very success in this niches, so I am not sure how well I will measure up. Should I go for it or should try to break it down just a little bit more?

What are your offers? Are you going for high priced consulting gigs? Or, are you looking to promote as an affiliate various lower-cost offers?

If you're monetizing with high-cost offers, smaller, focused markets will work as long as your prospective clients have the funds and are willing to pay for high-cost help. If you're looking to earn smaller commissions, you'll need higher volume.

Research and find out exactly what your market wants and is willing to pay for. Small businesses often don't have tons of resources for high-priced consulting ... but some do. I'm not sure about churches, but I do see church TV ads so some must be investing in marketing.

I'm in a small business niche (a specific industry) and I earn the lion's share of my revenue promoting recurring commission web-based business software. I suspect there's church and non-profit software you can promote. If you find one that sells for $50 to $100 per month and pays recurring commissions, and as long as the software is high quality, you may have a winner.

I've never followed the rule of something I'm "Passionate About" when it comes to a niche.

Because I look at things with a broader view.

Things you are passionate about are: Your wife, kids, parents, etc...

Whoever you can also make life better for, that are close to you.

So when I go into a niche, I am looking at it being something that helps my passions.

So sometimes it helps to have a broader view, or think a bit lateral.

At the moment, I am not going after high-priced projects. They are mostly local/in-state projects. What are some ways of finding out what my clients/target market are searching for?

There is some huge money to be found in Church business. Like jgant said recurring commissions are great. Churches (and small businesses) can be broken down into sub-niches.

    Church Music
    sunday school
    VBS
    Youth Ministry
Sermon Streaming Hosting.. etc etc etc.

The market is wide open but with a church you have to bring practical value or else you will not get any business.

Pick a niche and just hit it!

    Rooting for ya!

I never thought of those sub-niches. I have done some research on Sunday School. Some of the websites are older and have ALOT of content. I never thought about Church Music or Youth Ministry. Thanks for the thoughts!

    Hi GraphicBluePrint!
I think you are on track by following your passion... with the added bonus of already having a portfolio that includes your ideal customers (churches and small businesses). Have you heard of Business Network International? They have chapters all over the world, and the BNI way of doing business is via word of mouth referrals. I know it's offline marketing, but if you go in even as a guest, you can ask for contacts at churches in your area. If you become a member of a chapter, people will get to know you (often other small business owners) and will want to work with you as well as pass along your name to their contacts. If you market with the niche, people who want to work with you will ask if you could branch out and work with their specific situation...and you could happily deliver. Good luck!

Do what you know and what you enjoy. If you know and enjoy graphic arts for churches then stick with that. If what you enjoy is marketing, then the niche is not that important, just find the profitable ones. I personally think that there are profitable ideas in any niche. But in the long run I would much rather be happy than rich. I have heard of too many rich people dying of drug overdoses or suicide to put rich as my first goal. Happy always first, hopefully Successful will follow. But even if it does not at least you are happy.
