Just Did a New Design, Please Have a Look and Let me Know!

Hello Warriors! I was working on my blog design for last few days, it is now coming to life, please take a look: BlogKori

Okay after you do, tell me if I will get any personal design awards from you?

Please come back to this thread and please write:

3 Things that you loved about the design and want to copy.

3 Things that you didn't like and want to change.

Some tech details: It is on wordpress, thesis theme 1.8.5, I designed it myself. Also it is responsive, so you can just make your window small and see how it looks.

Honest feedback, suggestions and questions are welcomed,
Thanks.

    I like the layout.
I dislike the menu's font style. Drop the italics.
There seems to be something missing style-wise that I can't quite put my finger on it. It's missing that final touch.
Lastly, change the background color on body.custom. Make your background color grey because when I resize my browser your #page extends pass the background image and it becomes white on white.

    It's quite busy.

I find it hard to get my eyes to concentrate on the content.

There's a reason all the big tech blogs and newspapers use such a basic and clean layout -- because it works.

I would try and be more simplistic in your design. The design should only enhance the content, it shouldn't take attention away from the content which is what I find your design doing to me.

Will, thank you very much for the visit.

I had used clean content based designs over the years, now I am going for a busy layout now. This new design focuses more on the revenue potential (notice the ads) and trying to be like a portal site. But have to test things.

Yes, it's obvious you are trying to focus on revenue potential but when the visitors know that as well, it doesn't work so good. When I get to the site all it looks like is an advertising portal with a little content in between.

        You don't want that.

You want people to arrive on the site, get into the content, and then present offers to them alongside that content but not in such an over-bearing way.

The best ads are those that blend into your content. The ones you are currently running scream ads and most people will either hit the back button or just ignore them.

Honestly, there was nothing I loved about the design
that I would want to copy.

3 fundamental things that I would change right away:

    1. Color Scheme

The light blue and grey color scheme is not attractive
    or convincing.

    2. Number of Banners

There are too many banners and ads on the page for
me to focus on your message.

    3. Slider

I didn't find the content of the slider area particularly
    useful or necessary.

    That's my honest feedback.

In effective web design, less is more.

Look at stuff you can take away from the site so that
you can get people to focus on your main message.

      Ahhhhhh! OReilly, that was heartbreaking

But better truth than flattering words. Anyways in response to this, I am really going to test this new layout and trying to maximize the ad revenues.

About the content that did not appeal to you, this maybe because you are in IM and know these stuff already. My content are for the internet starters and etc.

But I highly appreciate your feedback and I will keep on improving.

        Very true.

Rather than giving platitudes and half the truth, I thought
it best to tell you exactly what I thought of your current
        design.

Regarding the main content of your site, I didn't get to pay
attention to that at all because of the flashing banners and
ads elsewhere on the site. (They drew my attention first).

If I land on a site with multiple flashing ads, I hit the back
button very quickly and don't stay to read the content.

Just one more trouble Shaun, if you click to a single entry page you will see just the top banners, please also tell me when reading that single page do you find it annoying?

          Thanks
          To your success!!

I agree its very busy looking. You may want a more simplified look. Some of the best looking and easy to digest sites are ones with a lot of white space.

It's obvious you've done a lot of work on it and are trying to monetize the blog, but the entire top portion ... ads and slider are like flashing neon lights that feel like a stroll through Vegas. Very distracting.

    Here's my take on it.
    I like it.
The only thing I'm never keen on are images that appear a little squashed, but other than that, looks good to me.
Just goes to show that we all have different opinions and tastes.

From the perspective of a former designer:

    1. Get rid of the ads. They don't make any money and only distract your visitor from where they should be clicking. Which brings me to the next point...
    2. What do you want your visitors to click on? The ad? The categories? The content? The Facebook?
    3. The slider makes your site look spammy. The infographic link looks spammy. Remove them.
    4. The title font makes your site look cheap and generic. Change it.
    5. Get rid of "Recent Posts" widget.
    6. Combine "About BlogKori", "Meet Tamal", and "Meet HAC" all into one nice friendly widget.
    7. Get rid of the "Home" and "All About Us" from the top menu.
    8. Get rid of the dropdowns unless those secondary links are actually getting you very important SEO ranks. (Re-organize your menu links better. There's too much stuff in there.)
    9. Change the home page format to only show content in 1 column.
    10. Get a picture of the both of you put up to get some real authentic personality in the site.

The biggest problem with your site is that it looks like a cookie cutter site. All the graphic visuals (color, images, typography) you added served more to make your site look generic than it did to make it look unique.

I would strip the site back down to the bare colors and only add the visual effects that make you stand out, look unique, and look authentic.

That's all I can say for now. Anymore than that and I'd have to charge you an arm and a leg.

Remove about two thirds of the text, which become a blur on the page. Insert some graphics instead, alternate words and images. Creating a "shopping mall" effect would only work if you have regular visitors in the first place.

    Less is more.
