Why Most People Fail To Make Money Online. Is It Your Fault?

Hey Warriors,

Shawn here and today I just wanted to share 10 reasons why 99% of people fail to make money online. Now before I get started, please don't quote me on that percentage, but the point is that it's a lot : )

Ready?

Reason 1: S.O.S - also known as "Shiny Object Syndrome" is one of the biggest problems for most people, especially when first getting started. Everywhere you turn there is some new Power System or Push Button Magic Formula. I admit I am still guilty of this from time to time : )

Reason 2: No Plan - If you have ever heard the saying "Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail". Unfortunately if you don't have a goal in place and a way to achieve it, then there is no way to succeed. It's like using your GPS, but not putting in a destination.

Reason 3: Paralysis by Analysis - You may have heard this saying before and guilty of it. If not, it basically means that too much time is spent on trying to perfect everything that nothing really ever gets done. Just remember, whatever you put out the first time is the worst it can ever be. You can always go back and tweak later to make it better when you see some results.

Reason 4: Invest in Current Needs - This kind of relates to the S.O.S reason #1. There are always cool new software and tools that come up on a regular basis that can help automate your business. Before you buy them always ask yourself this question "Will This Help Me Right Now With What I Am Doing?". If the answer is No, simply mark it down and revisit it once you have a direct need. If it's a quality product it will still be around.

Reason 5: You Are Not Alone - So many times I see people give up because they can't do something in their business. Maybe it's some technical stuff or maybe creating web pages and graphics. The point here is that even though you can't do it, there are a ton of talented people that can. Never let these types of excuses stop you from moving forward.

Reason 6: Buy Things - A lot of times you will see someone that will have a bit of success and make a few bucks and then to celebrate by going out and buy things. Maybe they buy some new clothes, electronics or whatever. The point is, that when you are just starting out, it's important to take those small successes and reinvest back into your business.

Reason 7: Pick Your Passion - So many times you will see people get into a business because they see everyone else doing it and before long they get bored and want to move to something else. Instead, if you can choose an area that you are obsessed and passionate about, you will come across more genuine and actually enjoy what you are doing. "Enjoy What You Are Doing" ... What a concept : )

Reason 8: It's All About "ME" - I understand we are all in business to make money. That being said, if you focus solely on your results and the bottom line you are missing out. Instead if you focus your energy on helping and serving others, your business will grow exponentially and you will actually feel good about making a difference.

Reason 9: Sell Something - Now this one is going to sound a little funny, but I see it happen all of the time. In order to make money online, you need to sell something. It doesn't matter if you sell other people's stuff as an affiliate or your own products. In order to make money, You Need to Sell Something... Period.

Reason 10: No Action - I have left this one specifically to the end as I feel that this is the most important. The main reason why most people fail and give up with internet marketing is that they don't take consistent action. They may try a few things and stop and then try a few more things and then stop. For true success, you need to form daily habits and take action on the tasks that are going to push your business forward. By doing this consistently, you will see that each of those actions compounds on top of each other over time. This is where results and success are achieved.

By no means is this an exhaustive list, but some of the more common ones that I have seen in my experience. Can you see yourself in any of these?
Would love to hear your thoughts about these and any others that I may have left off that are holding you or others back.

Shawn

Those are ten good reasons and you've pretty much nailed the main ones and I could list a dozen more lesser reasons. I think because there are so many variables that's why there is such a high failure rate in the Internet Marketing Arena.

    Great post!!
All ten points are strike to the bull-eye!!
I agreed the most for point 10: taking massive action consistently!

Are these kind of threads really necessary?
Every few weeks there is a new post on why people fail.

  • Why do you complicate things so much? It's far simpler than that...

The reason as of why most people fail online is:

They cannot drive targeted traffic to a quality product/service that addresses a real need/desire.

If you do that, you make money online. Simple.

      Yup.

In order to make money you simply need something to SELL (product or a service) that people want and need, then drive traffic and track your numbers.

I agree .. partially. Traffic is just one part. Even if the product or service is quality doesn't always mean it will convert.

In my opinion it's the funnel that is the most important. Once that is converting, then Traffic is king.

Great post Shawn. I like #3. Sometimes you just need to get in the game.

Even taking a survey, doing a task at Amazon Mechanical Turk, writing an article at iWriter, or doing a gig a Fiverr, at least gets you making your first dollar. For some of us it then becomes addictive to make money online.

Great post and breakdown of the main reasons why most people fail to make money online. Hopefully many newbies will stop jumping from shiny object to object and will begin to take action.

I think most people fail at IM because most IM pedagogy is based upon teaching people a transient ranking trick, and not about teaching people how to make a real business -- which is very difficult to teach. (if not impossible)

Reason 3 - Paralysis by Analysis is a big one.

The beauty with internet marketing is that it's a very forgiving type of business. You can make a slew of mistakes, and still see success.

Case in point... I have a friend who is notorious for having spelling errors in his emails, sales letters and newsletters. All of his material is designed super simple and ugly. Etc etc etc.

But he makes a killing online because he focuses on what matters: getting off his butt and actually doing stuff (flaws in all). He focuses ruthlessly on building up his buyers list, connecting with those people via email and offering products that he knows they need.

He messes up on a ton of stuff, but manages to get those 3 things right and because of this, he's seen a ton success.

      .
I get attached for spelling all the time, I stopped listening to them when I learned that Ben Franklin wanted to fix the English language so people can spell. No one can spell, so it's no big deal.

This post right here should help highlight the OP's point. Making yourself do SOMETHING even while you are making mistakes is much better than doing NOTHING and trying to perfect everything. It's the extra effort that really begins to make all of the difference.

I'll add choosing a business model that isn't a good fit with their skill set and interests.

Another mistake is not having a good offer. You can produce the greatest content and sales pages, but if the offer isn't good, it's not going to sell (or will result in a high refund rate). Finding/creating a great offer is important regardless of the niche.

Choosing a niche in which one is passionate is good, but it's also important that the business model in that niche fits with skill set and interests.

I really informative post here buddy, useful to many people here in this community that struggle,
I think the key to failing is the fact that people are not consistent, not only in there work but what work they do. People get attracted by a new shiny object every single day and this leads to them not finishing what they started. One day they will work on one system and the next day another, when people start realising they need to work on one system consistently this is when they will make money!

I've definitely suffered all of these. Especially #1.

Although I still buy products from time to time if it can help my own sales funnel and I can promote them as an affiliate after I've done a review of the product.

I believe one factor is also expecting too much too soon. Internet marketing is all about building, putting in hard work in the beginning and then working less as you realize the fruit of your front end effort. This does not mean you could stop working though.

I definitely agree with both of you ... consistant effort creates long term success. Unfortunately most people give up before they can cash in

I think it is also because of the competition. so many seo's nowadays and you've got to be lucky to be a successful one. sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you still fail.

Great post! I already know all of these reasons but I am sure this post can help newbies! Personally, I think #3 and #7 are the reasons why I am not getting anywhere. Finding a niche that you are passionate about is not as easy as it sounds, at least not for me.

I believe that your list is very good.

I feel that I could add more reasons why most people fail to make money online, like the fact that there are too many dishonest people online, and they can easily hide themselves. These people are causing many problems, and ruining the online atmosphere. Newbies are big victims of experienced online sellers and service providers who take advantage of their ignorance.

Another reason is the fact that internet marketing is a complex system, even though all internet marketers present is as if it was something simple with the intention to mislead the ignorant public. Everything seems to be simple, but the truth is that you have to work hard and follow many steps until you’ll manage to have a solid business.

Another basic reason already mentioned is the fight for traffic, which is a daily battle, while the competition is terrible and you cannot reach your audience.

I have to agree with you, but for every dishonest person there are 10 honest that are really trying to make a go of it.

Dishonesty doesn't last for long ....

Nice 10 reasons on why are not making online. I particularly agree with reason number 10 because without action, nothing will happen. Another point that I would like to take note is to stay Focus on one proven system at a time.

  • I think one of the big reasons people fail to make money online is that they try to make money the hardest way; namely, through affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is great if you're good at it, but it's about a hundred jillion billion times easier to make money online by freelancing than by pushing info products. I mean, if you can't make a few bucks on fiverr, I think it's safe to say you're not even trying.

      Good Point Andy ...

The only issue with that is that if you are doing the work on Fiverr then you are still trading time for money, but I agree it's a good start.

Instead of Fiverr, I would post services right on the WF as I think keeping 20% of the money is robbery
