FaceBook Is Almost Ready to Release FaceBook Graph Search -- The Future of Search

by tpw 42 replies
I don't know if you have heard yet about the new FaceBook Graph Search (GSO), but it is pretty darn slick...

Last week, I watched the following 55 minute video about this product, and I can definitely see some real value in this for marketers everywhere...

Graph Search Overview

I am pretty sure that this will not be a Google-killer, but it will definitely be an excellent Lead Generation Tool that will help us find the people we most want to target our marketing messages.

In a nutshell, a search query in FB Graph Search looks like this:
Find: "marketing manager for web design company located in Tulsa Oklahoma"
In other words, it is going to allow us to search for people who match a very specific criteria, as far as job title, type of firm, location, and much more...

We will even be able to search for people like this...
Find: "restaurant manager for pizza restaurant with delivery located in Dallas TX"
Find: "CEO of dental management company located in Oklahoma"
This tool will be a godsend for anyone offering Local Marketing Services.

But, I truly believe that it will be a tool that will also have value outside of local B2B lead generation.

For example, what if I created a query like this:
Find: "home owner with roof damage located in 74074"
Find: "divorced parent with children and home owner located in Wichita Kansas"
Find: "single female between age of 22 and 30 who likes physical fitness and reading located in Stillwater, Oklahoma" LOL Maybe I could use this to find my next wife...
Absolutely, the potential for this to help us find the most appropriate people to present our marketing messages is going to be awesome...

In my mind, this will be like Linked In on steroids!!

This is the future of "people search" and "lead generation"!! Unfortunately, it is NOT YET HERE...

This program is still in Beta... In order to be able to use it, you have to "Join The Waiting List" to get approved by FaceBook, just so that you can play with this tool...

I applied to become a beta tester for the FaceBook Graph Search program nearly 12 days ago, and I am still not approved for participation...

You can find out more about this program by watching the 55 minute video included in this post, or by visiting the FaceBook page for this product HERE...

I'd be interested in knowing what you think of this program, and more importantly, the different ways that you can foresee that we will be able to use this tool within our businesses...

So let's kick this can around a bit to see what we can come up with, before this research tool is released to the entire FaceBook community...

    LOL!

I was thinking the same thing as you.... Could be very useful.

BUT, I can also see how it could be abused. Like I'm now fearing that I'm going to be getting billions of friend requests from marketers who find out I like a certain hobby or am interested in IM or whatever and then they will annoy me by trying to push their stuff at me.

Then again smart marketers can probably use it to add value. I could see it being a good way to build relationships with like minded people and if you just happen to have a website or be selling products in that niche, it could be a goldmine. But only if done the right way.

How long did it take from when you signed up as a beta-tester and when you were approved?

I figured I would have been approved by now...

Seems a little creepy to me personally. My biggest question, however, what will it cost? There is no way fb will make it be free, given they are charging people to send messages these days (to people you aren't friends with)

Hopefully freakin Google doesn't step in and buy the whole dang thing!

But yea this was expected to come from Facebook, It's just a matter of time.
I have also read somewhere that Facebook is planning on launching their own search engine.

If so, then it's too bad that most people will not be able to put the information to work for themselves right away, after going through his product.

The feature is in beta, and you have to get on a waiting list to gain access to the feature.

I have been on the waiting list for 12 days so far.

Who knows how long it will be before FaceBook makes the feature available to the entire FaceBook community...

If you want to buy a product today that will teach you how to use something that is not available to you now, and is uncertain as to when it will be available to the public, then go for it...

But generally, I like to read a product, then go apply what I have learned immediately, not at some unspecified future date.

Sorry. I cannot comment on the WSO product, because I haven't seen it.

I can only comment on the FaceBook Graph Search tool based on the research I have done on this tool over the last two weeks, and its current status inside of FaceBook.

It seems like a promising tool, but since it is still a "beta" product and it is not yet available to the public, I am not going to get too excited about it just yet.

It is available to some people through the Beta program.

But it definitely is not available to anyone who has not been accepted into the Beta program.

I hear ya. I guess I'm still laughing at the idea that anyone has used the Beta version of this to successfully 'grow their business.' Claiming mastery before this even hits wide release seems comical to me.

That said, I understand the desire to jump on it fast and become an 'expert' as soon as possible.

I just feel it is unfortunate that people will buy that product and learn about this novel new technique to market themselves online, then discover that they cannot actually use that technique to market themselves online -- just yet...

LOL...yep. It seems like maybe Facebook is borrowing a page from Google's playbook with this. They're building up the hype before the launch nicely.

Not only that but, being that it is in beta, it could change drastically before it is finalized. Not know what this product is, I don't know if that would affect the use of it though, but still to be considered.

Facebook is taking it's best shot at Google's business. Google used to be about getting out there and exploring the outside. The Graph Search does so in a different way - by exploring the inside.
I'm really looking forward to seing how the search engine battles will go in the next few years.

Another reason I do not have and never will have a FB account. I can't believe all the info people will tell the whole world. I personally don't want another way a marketer can "target" me.

Since I can't imagine FB would let marketers use this to directly spam people how will you market? You find out that a person has roof damage and they live in a particular zip code what do you do next? You become a fake friend? You claim that you also had roof damage? Won't there have to be some sort of back-door, "ninja" technique to take advantage of the information? Don't get me wrong - I have no idea if there is a pure as snow white hat way to do this but my first impression screams major abuse by the grey and black hatters.

Will there be a way for people to opt out of being in the search listings? After their 20th "new friend" telling them that they like blue widgets also won't people figure out that they are being manipulated and get angry?

People have always expressed concern about FaceBook's privacy policies, and surely they will continue to do so.

I expect that only the black hatter and the person who is always looking for the free ride -- free advertising -- will "friend" people so that they can advertise to them.

Serious business owners will pay-to-play and pay to send advertising to those people who they have discovered through the FB Graph Search tool.

We have several paid advertising options available to us now through FB, and with the FB Graph Search tool, we marketers will have one more research tool at our disposal to help us get our advertising to the right people on FaceBook.

The bottom line for me is that this will be an excellent market research tool, and with FaceBook's paid advertising programs, we will be able to better spend our money by finding the exact people to whom we actually want to advertise our wares.

I don't have time to watch the video right now but what are you actually searching when you put in those search requests? Is it then showing you a list of Facebook members that match those requests?

If so, then people will just start putting their profile to not listed. Who wants to be marketed to in this way through Facebook.

    Am I missing something here?

Surely they would have to. There would be an uproar otherwise.

They let you hide yourself from search results inside of Facebook now so I can only assume they will let you do the same with this. In which case a lot of people will be opting out from it.

Facebook is supposed to be a personal social network site. That's what the average user logs into Facebook for. I can't see the average user wanting any of this. Save that stuff for sites like Linkedin where people have actually gone there for the purpose of networking.

I must say I totally agree with Will here, I think this is going to be a tool that as soon as marketers get hold of it will cause either Fbook users to opt out in huge numbers or for Fbook themselves to change how it operates. I have been very surprised for a bit of time now about this and why everyone is getting so excited about this, I can see this being another massive Facebook flop and desperation to finally start showing some revenue profits to shareholders as until now they can't stop losing money.

This is not meant to be an attack on India or Pakistan per se, however, could you imagine the amount of spam coming from these kind of places when spammers get their teeth into it and send messages to anyone they can lay their hands on. The same of course applies to the US, UK etc.

I feel that as Facebook are currently setting this up, not only will this not compete with Google, Yahoo or Bing but it will be a massive flop due to the reasons Will and I have stated. I just can't see this working and taking off for Facebook users never mind to be a challenge to Google or a good tool for marketers. I think some of the basic ideas are good and solid and a good advertising opportunity but this hasn't been thought through in terms of the consequences of everyone getting their hands on it, not just good and honest marketers or any other reputable business for that matter.

This needs a serious rethink IMO and think the OP needs a reality check from getting too excited here. "The Future of Search", you must be joking not a chance of that happening in it's present form.

I read that, i'm not blind TPW, but you seemed to ignore the rest of my post which wasn't really focussing too much on whether it will challenge Google, of course it won't. Like I said I totally agree with Will on this, I am not remotely excited about this nor do I think it will be a good lead generator or much else by the time Facebook realise the level of spam that will hit the average member, so I can say pretty confidently that in it's current form this won't be a good lead generator or a marketer's dream. You're entitled to your own opinion of course, just my 2 cents.

You're entitled to your own opinion of course, just my 2 cents.

I guess I need some more coffee. I missed where I said I disagreed with Will.

To your other point, I also believe there will be some blow-back from FaceBook's users -- IF FaceBook's management team did not think this through.

Spammers are people who tend not to understand the basics of marketing to a targeted audience. Spammers tend to throw a bunch of crap against the wall, in hopes that something will stick.

I believe that IF FaceBook did not factor in how to deal with the spammers, they will have to find ways to counter the spammers, or they will meet the same fate as MySpace.

If FB Graph Search survives the spammers, then this tool does in fact hold a lot of promise for lead generation and launching a viral campaign of some sort.

Personally, I believe that FaceBook already knows how they are going to prevent the spammers from ruining FaceBook for the rest of us. I honestly believe that the powers that be at FB could see the potential for abuse, before launching this tool in Beta, and I believe they most likely already have a plan in place to prevent this tool from destroying the loyalty of FB's users.

Maybe I am giving FaceBook's management too much credit. And maybe you are not giving them enough credit.

Only time will tell if this is something that will be good for the community or something that will kill the community.

Yep, agree with your analysis of it, like I said it does have potential if managed right but maybe you're right i'm not giving them enough credit for dealing with potential spammers. Certainly as it is being put forward right now they don't on the surface of it seemed to have factored it in.

Of course you may be right that they're just not discussing it in public I just think this will be abused by idiots and ruin the opportunity for others. Like we're all saying time will tell though.

Have you checked out the tumblr blog "Actual Facebook Graph Searches"?

He plays with funny or shocking ideas and results:

"Mothers of Jews who like bacon"

"Spouses of married people who like Ashley Madison"

"People who like Focus on the Family and Neil Patrick Harris"

"Single women living near by who are interested in men and like getting drunk"

It's actually kind of weird. It's like they are building a new tool to ruin their own social network. I can't see how they could have thought this through properly and still gone ahead with it.

Ah well, if nothing else it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

We might all be completely wrong... then again, maybe not.

That's the thing Will, I don't think they have thought it through properly as anyone who can think what opening Facebook up to everyone like this, would surely know we're in for a spam fest and more. Anyway like you say time will tell but I can see this going all wrong pretty fast.

Agree. Seems weird to me, and you can imagine how this will be abused.
The old commercial "spam spam spam spam" springs to mind...
