Just Curious, Can HTML Be Copyrighted etc.?

So, I wanted to create an online calculator for formula for one of my sites but have no clue where to start. Started searching and found a couple of them online. I looked at the source code for one of them and realized that it is done in html.

Was wondering if copying and pasting the code is considered a copyright violation? I mean it is maths basically?

html doesn't do math. There has to be some sort of other coding that is actually doing the math.

    IANAL.

Copyright applies to expression, not facts.

Mathematical formulas can't generally be copyrighted, they are facts. (There are probably rare exceptions if the formula is entirely arbitary, with no functional purpose)

Program code containing mathematical formulas is copyrighted however.

If you write your own program, containing the same formulas, you'd be on much safer ground than copying a whole program or section.

BTW, I assume the code is JavaScript - HTML doesn't do math.

Thanks for the replies guys. So, if it is javascript or any other program, it is definitely considered to be on copyright grounds?

Also, if I sort of change some of the layout or something then it is okay right?

It most certainly is JavaScript, and the code is copyrighted, and so is the layout, images, and so on. I think you need to either write your own code, hire someone to do it, or contact the author and ask for permission to use the source. You can also check the source for licensing information. It may so happen that the author allows redistribution.

Write your own code or hire someone to do it instead of thinking of ways to rip someone else's.

I'm sure you can find the source code that is available to be used for FREE.
In the long run it will have save you a heap of time.
