Be Careful... Someone Hacked My Paypal!

So this evening I logged into my Paypal account just expecting to see everything as normal, but I saw 2 payments that have came out of my account, One today and One yesterday. Both were paid to "Facebook Ireland, Ltd."

1) I dont have paypal on my facebook account at all.
2) I have never ever entered my paypal email anywhere on facebook.

A total of around $40 was taken from my paypal account by some scammer somewhere. I read up on it and apparently this has happened to many people, some not even having facebook accounts.

You can see paypal forums posts about it here:
https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/...language=en-gb

and here...
https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/...nt/td-p/198442

So it seems like if I disbute the money you can get it back, Someone cracked my strong password and used my ip to enable themselves to spend money on my bank on facebook.

Its made me so angry that some scammer has hacked into my paypal and spent my money! I'm also quite worried too. I will be calling paypal when their lines are open as well as checking up on the disbute. I will update this thread as more information comes.

I warn people to -
1) Make their password super super super strong!
2) Add a "security key" on your account!
3) Make sure all security questions are up to date!

So thats all, I hope it dosen't happen to anyone else, but I thought I should let people know, I will be updating this thread as this case continues, it may become a help base for anyone else that has been hacked also.

Ya you should really get the pin validator. It generates a new number from your key chain every 30 seconds and is required to login. Handy Dandy may I say

Sorry to hear you lost money.

This happened to a friend of mine last week...two separate transactions taken from their Paypal, which was linked to their checking account...a total of $530.00 was taken from their checking account because their Payapl account balance was $0.00. Paypal did return the money immediately; the bank was less cooperative.

$530 is alot! Its good to know that the money was returned... But by the looks of things it's been going on for years, it's crazy that PayPal is doing nothing to stop it!

    That really is a worry.

As a financial institution, they really should have more safeguards in place, or have systems like the credit card companies do, to go after fraudsters and protect the people that are making them the money.

I'm surprised that there isn't any laws that mandate that they should deal with this better?

I'm interested to know how you go along?

This shit happened to me last week. Some one took $550 from my checking account that was linked to my paypal id. So the transaction showed on my checking account. It didn't show on my paypal account, so paypal has blocked my checking account and they blocked the transaction. They didn't return the money back to me.

In your case it looks like you agreed to something and a billing agreement was created. No hacking there. Just read what you are agreeing to.

From what I read on one of the forum links you posted, Facebook Ireland sets up a billing agreement and it seems to be connected to buying game credits. Did you buy game credits? Have you gone in and canceled that billing agreement?

Well I find it hard to believe that Facebook Ireland broke into your account to steal $40. That is just ridiculous.

If I was to break into your account I would just spend the money on downloadable products, or even send it to myself as a service fee (using a VPN or proxy).

So you think Facebook broke into your account and stole $40? Was it from a billing agreement as the link in your post points to? If it was - yes you agreed to it but just don't remember.

No, I did not agree, trust me on this one. Lets see pay pals outcome on this, I know 100% I have not put my PayPal on my Facebook.. And if I did what would it be spent on? I don't do ads, I don't do gaming on there. Is a hacker that's done it read the link that was in my first post.

While strong password is necessary, you also have to make sure that your computer is free from virus, spyware and other malicious software. They can sniff your passwords.

Use strong antivirus like Esset and Kaspersky. And also, do not use automated tools to fill your important passwords, like your browsers save password features, it is not secure. Always manually type your confidential information directly into your browser.

I've seen many PayPal complaints now a days , does PayPal gone out of security?

I thought it was the most secure Payment processor in the whole wide world! But now I think I was wrong.

Any way if you want to protect your money from driving away by a scammer, Just make your PayPal account auto withdrawal.

This will withdraw your money money at every midnight leaving your account with just transaction history. believe me, this is very useful and PayPal itself recommends it.

Now every midnight, My balance is withdrawn and now a scammer can only get $0.00 out of my account!

        Hello,

If you PayPal account got compromised doesn't necessarily mean that its PayPal's fault. In fact, its easy to find out. Just ask them to provide your login history log. I'm pretty sure, that everything is OK.

There are many reason why it could happen. And probably the most probable one is that its because of some silly thing you've done yourself. Some examples are :

        1. Phishing email
        2. Unsecured wireless connection
        3. Login from your friends/public computer
        4. Your kids used your computer,
        5. and so on and on

so best advice is make sure to adopt and use good security practices at ALL times.

        good luck

          ^^^ this.

i had an unauthorized purchase recently. it wasn't much, but only because i didn't have much in that account.

i just logged in and disputed the purchase and got my money back.

the only thing i can think of is that when i used an unsecured wireless connection a bout a few days to a week earlier at a mcdonalds or some other fast food restaraunt someone got my log in info. i just used that opportunity to change my password on not only that, but my other accounts as well.

it's good practice to change them periodically anyway.

lots of reasons that this could happen, but the most likely reasons are the ones so11 gave.

Yes do that, then knock on some wood, then pray. After all that stand in a circle with strange symbols and incense, turn in a circle counter clock wise 12 times with your eyes closed. Then open your eyes.

Have you ran any ads using FaceBook?

Usually for UK customers, FaceBook Ireland is where the payments go to for FaceBook ads.

After your daily budget has been spent, they auto-withdraw the funds from your account.

I had my paypal account hacked into about 2 years ago. I have a GE Paypal Credit Card and they maxed the card out in 2 days ($8,000). I called up Paypal and they put the money back within 24 hours. Thank God they didn't try to use my Paypal balance or my bank account. That would have been a big problem.
