Why should business owners have a blog? (Or should they?)

If you were speaking with an offline business owner, what reasons would you give them for needing a blog?

Or do they need one?

    Thinking out loud here ...

I think list building for offline businesses is way more important than anything else they could be doing, including blogging.

Then again, having a great blog is a good way to build a list. The downside of blogging is the time intensity to crank out content so the first thing I would recommend is remove the dates on the posts.

Stale blogs don't inspire and business owners (a) are super busy (b) often don't get that a great site/blog will get them loads of new traffic/leads (c) their blog content will help their organic SEO (d) will let their site/blog idle for months at a time.

In summary I'd say yeah, business owners should have a blog with the caveat of "This is like a garden, you need to plant new material all the time if you want to harvest anything from it. If you don't regularly publish new content, then don't expect your blog to do anything for you."

OK I better get some chores done :-)

    Hi Shay

Are you selling websites and blogs to offline businesses? If you are, it's a great business because many offline business owners know nothing about websites, even if they have one If you're not selling them these services, I'd save your breath because most of them just see it as extra work that they don't have time for.

But assuming you are selling business owners a blog, here are a couple ideas:

    1. Instantly alert their followers of a sale or promotion

    2. Develop rapport with their followers which sets them ahead of their competition, because their followers feel more of a relationship with the business owner - relationships sell

    3. Add video to show their followers parts of the business that they ordinarily don't see - a behind the scenes look at the business. For example, a restaurant could show how they prepare the food.

    4. Free advertising for their business

I'm sure there's lots more, but that's all that comes to my mind instantly.

    Enjoy your day!
    Terry

      Actually, I am considering it.

2 things that are incredibly easy for me are 1) putting up a blog and 2) writing content.

I am mulling the idea of providing a service that sets up the blog with content and provides a set amount of content per month.

Not sure how much to charge for the monthly serivce, though.

Well that is simple...to get more business.

Yellow pages and newsprint are going by the wayside and their customers don't look there to solve their problems anymore....they go inline to look for solutions.

So as a business owner...creating a blog can create a buzz within their industry and gain loyal followers and also new customers not only local but around the world.

    So to me..it's a no-brainer.
