Been building my website for 2 years: Now ready to work on making money with it

Hello all,

Long story short, I created a website 2 years ago called MoviePlotholes and I refused to put ads on it and whatnot for a time to simply focus on creating new content and not drive potential readers away by an ad-trap kind of page.

Now, I have more than a hundred pages, 40 thousand visits per month and about 170 000 page views per month.

I do feel that my website has now a strong base of visitors who will not be turned off by ads. And I guess now I am ready to move to the second part of my plan: splitting half my time on creating new content and the other half on money making strategies.

As you can all guess, I am a complete rookie in the money-making side of this operation. And I would like to know if some of you could be nice enough to just guide me in the right direction. Advises tailored to the type of website I have: which is simply a database on plot holes in Hollywood movies.

What would you recommend me to do? What kind of ads should I try to get?

You probably need more information - and I will be happy to provide them to you. Again, my apologies for being a rookie.

Thank you for your time and I am happy to finally join WarriorForum.

    1) You can promote "free tv movie" products with clickbank.
    2) Use adsense!

I would try monetizing with adsense or affiliate offers. Or perhaps you should try building a list and market affiliate offers to them.

is this a porn site by any chance. 2 years!!

Let's have a look that must be some site!

      But that is too long.

      Hope you make it.

I would try to make it an authority site overtime and sell it at a PR7 rank 5 years from now.

You are avery patient person for sure

An authority website is a large website that is looked upon as an authority in its niche. With the number of posts that you have on your website yours already has that status.

As someone who worked for a film festival in my youth and loves movies, I really like your site a lot. It's very entertaining.

I don't know if you've ever read Roger Ebert's blog, but he's written about how he's had a difficult time monetizing his blog. He has AdSense and is an Amazon affiliate mainly to sell his own books. He has mentioned he didn't make much from either.

I'm just guessing quite a few of your readers are film students and/or wannabe screenwriters. Have you looked into what type of affiliate products you might be able to sell to them? There are affiliate programs for screenwriting tools you might be able to sell via email marketing to a list.

My last suggestion would be to reuse the information on your website and create a Kindle ebook with it. You could actually create more than one, even a series. There are plenty of people who don't read websites who would like to read the type of information you write.

Whatever you decide, build a list in the meantime.

    Good luck!

      Good luck!
That is a really great idea Karry, one that I think would work. As for the subject matter of the site, (movies + fun movie plot info) this is really tough to nail your audience down because everyone likes movies. It's almost like asking "what should I try to sell on facebook?"

I think your best bet is a mix of adsense plus trying to sell media space.

If you can get your impressions high enough, you can start making some really good money just on selling ad space per impression.

Lots off big name sites do this.

The good thing is that you don't need to find out what your audience wants. That will be up to the ad publishers.

PM me if you are interested in a fairly straight forward solution to boosting pageviews/impressions if you decide to opt for this last route.

      Alex

  • Link to those movies being sold on Amazon on each of the pages below to the side above the post for one. Adsense is another method but by this point it would probably insult your users. Amazon seems like the best bet tbh. With the traffic you have you could easily be making a couple thousand from Amazon easily.

Jason, wow. Thanks for this great idea. It looks so self-evident now.

Thank you very much. But as I am a rookie at this, how do I get to promote Amazon movies on my website? Is there a section somewhere on amazon to become an affiliate sponsor or something ? (again, sorry for my lack of experience).

    $22.99

If I use my statistics for your site I'll show you the figures. 40k visits per month, I'll assume they are unique. 40% click-through rate, which is 16,000 product clicks, and a conversion rate of 8% which is 1280 sales. That would enable you to receive 8% commission which = $2.32 x 1280 = $2969.60 . That would be if you can emulate the same results I get. That's only on sales of videos, people tend to buy other things so earnings could be much more than this.

But you could do even better than this, you have a lot of potential in your hands, just have to figure out how to make it work for your site

Are you seriously saying one in two visitors will click on to a product? That seems ridiculously high.

By the way, the OP's site looks good (provided he writes everything in his own way). He can make a good amount from Amazon affiliate I reckon. And as someone suggested, he can perhaps convert his content into a Kindle book for those who want to read everything a in a book form.

The OP should also consider joining a forum like IMDB and talk about his site there by participating in threads and try and drive some traffic.

Less than 1 in 2, between 1 in 2.5 and 3, and I said I'll go by my stats. I think he could do just as good. I still think Amazon is the best route because that's where everyone buys from.

I've studied product review sites and amazon extensively, so I know what works and what doesn't. I dabble in other things, one of which I'm going to be releasing soon (list building), but aside from that if you check all my previous posts I've been mostly involved with product reviews and knowing everything I can about them.

  • Just re-checked, some of the star wars stuff sells for $50+, some box sets are even $180.

Sitting on a goldmine here. So I had to check semrush to make sure your stastistics add-up. Generally the traffic semrush shows accounts only for 1-2-3-4% of the visits. It says you get 1,000 visits per month, usually i go with the percentage 2, so 5 x 1,000 = 5,000 which is 10 percent then times by 10 is 50,000 which is not far off your 40k claim, so it accounts for a little more than 2% of your traffic.

Dude, with those stats, you already have that status...

      Congrats.

I'd go the Amazon route, myself. Besides the movies themselves, many of them have related 'stuff', from Star Wars bed linens to actor bios, etc.

You also have enough traffic to interest a good ad network. Skip the hit-or-miss Adsense and add a good CPM network or two. That's a guaranteed income stream.

As another poster said, you are sitting on a gold mine...

I spent some time on your site last night and was surprisingly pleased, amused and entertained. I always look for flaws in movies, and your writing about the Dark Knight Rises (a movie that I hate with a passion) made me laugh.

Go with Amazon Associates. People who visit your site are total movie buffs. Even if they've already seen all those movies, it doesn't necessarily mean they own them-- so they may feel inclined to buy. Not only that, but once you get them over to Amazon through your links, you'll still get a commission even if they purchase unrelated items.

Another idea would be that I'm sure the movie studios would want to advertise new movies on your site - also Netflix or other similar sites would as well. Someone mentioned an ad network - that would be key as they can target the traffic better for you and find people interested in movies etc...

really like the site , I would sign up to amazon affiliates and sell the movies you have written about.

netflix affiliate ads on the site could also work.

Not sure if you are in the UK but there is a show you might like Great Movie mistakes on BBC three, shows clips of movies where they have done things wrong, like an actor holding something in there left hand and then suddenly its in the right. its a very good show. You might be able to add something like that to your site. or just give it a watch if you have nothing to do for an hour .

That's a great website you got there. Solid content. I would sell movie-specific goodies like official T-shirts, mugs, etc. You have a fan site not a movie review site so fan-specific stuff should do well. Or sell custom Fiverr videos that are related to the movie plothole. There are tons of custom fiverr video sellers. Resell them for $25 a pop at your site. Pocket the difference.

      Hi,

I'd be interested if you could share your Analytics stats screenshot or something where you got your traffic stats numbers from... Looking at your Alexa and Semrush rankings I doubt you now have 40k visits per month... More like 1000 or so (no offense, just looking), which is about 30-35 people per day...

So I wouldn't be talking about a goldmine now, but it can be I like your website as others above, it's looking great and the content is awesome...

About the monetization - most usable options were said already and you can pick up what is most suitable to you... My advice is not to go with Adsense, it wouldn't suit your site (in terms of design, distraction of visitors etc.) and try what others are suggesting - linking posts to Amazon offers as Jason Perez O'Connor suggested... Or selling physical products as Sue McDonald is suggesting - memorabilia...

This actually got me an idea, why not to print every movie's photo on every object and sell it... just for uploading the photo - cafepress.com

      Hope that helps

Alexa get their data from people who use the Alexa toolbar, and as other people pointed out - except for IMers, very few people use it. That means outside the IM niche/market, the results are probably irrelevant.

Not entirely correct about Alexa. Alexa does get some of their data from Alexa toolbar installs. The rest comes from IP tracking and extrapolation. I visited them down in the Presidio in SF one day to determine why our Alexa rank was so far off (we were doing up to 50,000 visits per day - but way understated by Alexa). They adjusted their algo's about 3 months later and it tracked pretty close to our actual Google Analytics numbers. It tends to be one of the best places to go to get a "rule of thumb" on traffic.

Compete tends to understate traffic by 1/3 of what Google Analytics states.

Lucian Lada Stated - Alexa get their data from people who use the Alexa toolbar, and as other people pointed out - except for IMers, very few people use it. That means outside the IM niche/market, the results are probably irrelevant.

Really, really high quality site. I'm reading and am very impressed with the time, energy and consistency you've put into it. Not many people would spend two years on a project like this without any money involved. You deserve the success and what's to come.

Putting the movies up for sale seems like a good idea. I wonder though...you've just lambasted the film...poked fun at all the faults...are people going to want to get it now? Maybe.

I hope you are in a state that allows you to be an Amazon affiliate. I'm in NC and it's not permitted here since the NC state government and Amazon have been having a spat for awhile.

The people are coming to your site (and I hope coming back over and over again) because they love reading your articles on plot holes.

I say give them more of what they want!

Write a book loaded with plot holes! Publish it on Amazon (Kindle), Kobo, B&N, Apple and in paperback. The people buying it from your website will give it extra oomph in the book selling marketplaces and give both your book and website extra exposure.

This could be a really good business model for you as, I assume, you can put out a series of books with different movie plot holes.

Oh yeah, and you can try all the affiliate stuff too, but personally I think your best was of making money is having your own line of products (the books) that give your audience exactly what they are seeking.

Well done. Not my area of interest per se, but definitely has the potential to yield some great returns.

    Some ideas that came to my mind;

-Create an Opt-In Offer to offer subscribers access to exclusive "behind the scenes access" to books, video, products, etc... Build a List.
-Survey your audience, ask them "what they want more of?"
-Start email marketing... send subscribers offers to Netflix, Satellite TV, Memorabilia, Video Gaming, etc...
-Articles: You already seem to be preparing to construct a library of information, utilize your articles with targeted keywords, add Adsense (as suggested), but also look into sharing your articles on other established media sites in exchange for a link back to your site, squeeze page or opt-in.
-RSS Feed, Social Media, Share Buttons - Let em spread the word!

If you've built up the amount of traffic you specified above, a little subtle monetizing will likely keep your existing viewers, bring more, and you'll be printing money on-demand.

Gotta respect your patience in prioritizing your site over the money. Now it's time to start getting paid for all that hard work!

    Good work!

PS- If you do ad an opt-in, and start collecting user info be sure to add your legal disclaimer(s), as required by FTC.

I would get in touch with altitude digital, they run a network of publishers that pays ad rates CONSIDERABLY more attractive to their publishers than Adwords.

Like 5 to 6 times or more as good. They have high impression rate, so you may or may not qualify to work with them, but if you do, they will pay more scratch than google for ads.

Of course the obvious company for you to approach is Netflix for a sponsorship, and/or Amazon for their Instant Video as a marketer, not an affiliate, but a staight sponsorship.

It might involve some calls, but would probably pay more.

Great way to turn love of watching movies into a potentially well-paying gig. I guess you have to watch with a keen eye and take notes. Great site.

Many great monetizations suggestions so far. I like the one above about offering products/software to aspiring screenwriters, if they are indeed your visitors. You should find out with a survey. I suspect there are all kinds of "aspiring screenwriter" ebooks/software/courses you could promote as an affiliate.

You'll have to test different offers to see what people buy. The Amazon angle could be good because even if they've seen the movie, readers may be tempted to watch it again to spot your plot holes and perhaps spot more. You could try ending posts with "can you find other plot holes? click here to watch the movie"

Perhaps consider more reader participation so they can add their own plot holes and turn it into the authority movie plot hole website where readers really contribute. This could inspire people to buy the movie at Amazon because they can watch it asap.

    Awesome, awesome website.

Most of the time i read these kind of threads they are have hearted , rushed sites put together in a niche the owner knows nothing about with expectations of thousands flowing to their bank. Usually it just feels not just spammy but scammy.

This on the other hand is pure hard work and you deserve nothing but success.

NOw... how to get your traffic up.

Have you seen this guys YT page?

    CinemaSins - YouTube

    He's getting between 250,000 - 500,000 views a video (over 6.5 million views).

You already have the content - just read it our over some stills from the film... or for copywrite reasons if you don't want to you could stylise it (hey do you have a young kid perhaps they could draw stills from popular bits of the films) LOL - cute kids drawings with witty observations over the top could be viral gold! If you decide to try that one out let me know i have quite a few ideas to ramp up your traffic!

Anyway - i reckon you are on to a winner. Good luck.

Good luck.
Totally agree. There's a guy named Jeremy Jahns on youtube who does film reviews and gets good traffic. His editing has improved so much over the year or so he's been doing them and his style is very engaging.

Since he does not like spoilers, he usually simply talks to the camera.

Video is definitely a way to appeal to the masses--you know more people watch the movie than read the book (unfortunately, but true).

Adsense, Clickbank Movie Software, Movies and Books on Amazon or eBay...

Maybe even CPA network stuff like win a mobile phone, but not too many as they can be annoying...

Thank you guys for all your great advises.

I registered today to be an Amazon affiliate and will try a few more things in the next few days. I'll have to re-read all of your replies as there a lot of things I'm sure I missed.

    Thank you all again.

You can offer to sell advertisement spots(banner ads). You can also be an affiliate to the products you offer like amazon sells movies you can get paid to redirect them to your amazon affiliate page. ALSO ads don't scare people! People watch tv all day and commercials are playing ALL day remember that!

Just a thought, if you review older films which are on services like Netflix, love film etc... You could easily affiliate with them!

I have a feeling Amazon isn't going to convert that great since most of the movies have already been seen by your audience..The exception would be to add plotholes to movies that just become available on DVD etc.

The money is in the list. Most of your audience will gladly sign up for free updates/newsletters for new movies that you add. And that is something special because most sites need to entice signups by offering a free ebook, etc.

I'd forget direct Amazon affiliate ads.

Instead my email promo would go something like this: Hey here is my latest plothole....Also "Movie Title" is going to be available on DVD in about 5 days from now, you can preorder it for a great price (Amazon Link).

And then as was already mentioned add affiliate links to streaming sites like Netflix, etc.

Just be sure your emails always contain free value and you won't lose too many opt-ins.

Wow, you are a very patient man. I would definitely use affiliate marketing. I think banner ad would be nice to have. However, I would try to focus on amazon or clickbank. Good Luck!

A few of you have suggested ''doing a list''.

How does that work exactly? I just create a weekly email and tell people to join in? (again, sorry for my lack of knowledge on the issue).

      Thanks

Building a list consists of having an auto responder account like AWeber, whereby, you install a coded script into your webpage or a separate squeeze page. Subscriber's opt-in by entering their name & a valid email account in exchange for a free download, ebook, newsletter, or something enticing. By doing so, they've agreed to receive future emails from you. (*This is a required step, or it's considered spamming)

That data (name & email) is collected into your AWeber account. By which you can access your email subscriber list via your AWeber dashboard and create email campaigns. An email campaign in short is a series of pre-written emails calculatively written to build trust, and ultimately recommend (sell) products by informing, referring, and recommendation.

If you're running multiple opt-ins, you can manage several email campaigns. For example, each email campaign is generally specific to the niche or that which your target audience/subscribers would likely buy.

So, You are basically sending a pre-written email series on autopilot (of sort), and have the ability to drip feed those (pre-written) emails to be sent out to your subscribers at your predetermined times, by choosing the number of days, weeks, or months between each mailing.

It's always best to build up trust & send informative emails, and then start (quietly) suggesting/recommending products. In short, you are promoting your affiliate products or your own products through your email list to earn money by including your affiliate links to any number of products and services you elect to promote.

There's a lot to it, but it's really nothing too difficult once you learn the ropes. The trick is to offer something free or very compelling to build your readers interest to get them to subscribe and submit their name & email info.

Naturally, there is an art to building trust with your readers, and not every email should be selling (*really never), but rather to inform them of products relative to your niche that you personally are recommending.

I'm sure someone else will chime in here and produce a link to a better breakdown, but if not search the forums here.

Again, it sounds a lot more complicated than it really is, and building a 'responsive' list is where a large portion of sales are made. Hence, "The Money Is In The List" as I'm sure you've heard before.

    All the Best,

    Art

      Thank you for this.

I have another quick question, I have been trying for the past hour to become a Netflix affiliate - and it seems anyone now can become one.

However, when I go the official page, it sends me to google affiliate network and I can't seem to be able to connect at all. It just asks for my gmail password and sends me right back to the page.

Did anyone run in this problem before?

      Thanks

    Your welcome.

Don't know if this link will solve the problem, but I just Googled "Netflix Affiliate Program"

Hmmm... strange it wouldn't let me login either. Maybe glitch or Big "G" is doing an update.???

edit: I think you must first register to become a Google affiliate. Google has many products, and until you submit an application and getapproved into the entire Google Affiliate Network, you cannot sign up (*or sign in) for any single affiliate offer.

    Go here: http://www.google.com/ads/affiliatenetwork/

Sign up as a Publisher (*the right side, bottom page)
